Ok, weird subject I know, but I'm getting desperate.
I graduated at the end of last year with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Internet Computing and *still* have not found a job.

I've submitted my resume to all the recruitment agencies (focusing on IT ones mainly) and have only ever received two potential job matches.

Each fortnight I go through Seek and look for any IT work that is relevent to graduates, juniors or state "entry level" using those particular search terms. I've never received one interview so far.

I've been through top ASX companies and govt departments applying for graduate positions as I have come across them but haven't heard anything back.

My centrelink job network conatct is getting on my nerves wanting to put me forward for work that is completely unskilled and irrelevant. Basically they just want me off their books.

So, I was wondering if anyone had any other advice on getting an IT job? I really didn't think it was gonna be this hard.

....need....more.....RC..........stuff...........

Too much competition out there, and you risk having no experience. I have an accounting degree and a post grad in law, but I am a service manager for a forklift company. Get your foot in somewhere, get your resume done by a professional (best $150 I spent!) and just worry about earning the cash now, a few yrs time, your degree will come in handy

forward your resume to company's you would like to work for. Marked to their HR dept, "private and confidential".

print hundreds off, send hundreds... you'll get an interview somewhere.. no question.

I once had just two weeks to get a job before running out of dosh and having to go on the dole.. went psycho sending out resume's, got a job :)

I started at the bottom and worked my way up:

* a fast food place in my teens
* a computer technican in my early 20s
* a sales role in my mid 20's and still going

employers find your more desirable if youre already employed. in each of those jobs i had, i was employed by another company at the time when being successful candidate. i think to an employer, by you being employed already is a sign that you have value because someone already has/wants you, and youre fresh and up-to-date on current work ethics.

i beleive its common when a woman wants to return to work after raising a child for a bit, she can find it difficult because she is simply out of touch with the work force and the working lifestyle.

some food for thought i hope dude!

comepltely different fields, but its still not good to do all that study and not get a job out of it

Thanks guys for all the thoughts and ideas. Looking for work is like a job in itself!

Now, if only I could get paid for surfing forums and posting ;)

Matto, I'm hoping to jump in at your computer technician level.... I've done my newb time at a newsagent (for 13 years) so I think I can skip that part (hopefully).

Dammit, just found out two of my group project members from last year are working. Not to blow my own horn, but I think it was clear I was the more IT oriented member of the group :P

A guy I knew did a science degree....ended up going straight back to uni to get an engineering degree cos he couldn't get a job :P

Seriously, if anything, it *should* scare you. Hopefully then you'll look into work possibilities before you graduate, unlike slack old me who waited until after.

well i'd probably do the same thing, seeing as i've done just about all the maths an engineer would have to do in uni lol.

all my maths were engineering maths ones :(

NO NEED FOR ANY HELP GUYS.

I got a job today. I'm gonna be a computer technician. Exactly what I was looking for at the moment. Basically I can work as much as I want to if I want a day off, that's cool. Which is good cos someone at a law firm saw my website and wants to know if I can do theirs in my spare time.

Engineering is a damn bitch! Currently 3rd year, My god has it been a struggle thus far! Doing eng maths is just the beginning of your mathematics adventure within the engie course. hehe

I started out doing engineering. Then after a semester I swapped out to computer and mathematical sciences (not my choice....long story).....damn, all I was doing was maths.
