View Full Version : HPI Micro RS4 1/18 or Tamiya 1/10 for drifting?

I know most might say go for the tt-01/ tl03 or whatever and from what i have read they are a good solid car to set up for drifting...
But, since owning a mini-T I have discovered the joys of 1/18 scale cars.
One big plus is the compatibility of batteries, motors and electrics between the min-T and a Micro RS4. The money I can save going Micro can be spent on extra hop ups.
Tha is as long as the RS4 can be set up as a good drift car.
Any thoughts????

Dont get the MRS4. I've had one. It's not as good as the xray M18. I would stay away from 1/18th for drifting altogether. You'd need a REALLY smooth surface and the cars aren't as forgiving as 1/10ths. That said, I've seen a clip of MRS4s drifting ages ago which is what got me into drifting altogether. It was cool, but they were doing it in a kitchen around table legs (I think). Totally couldn't compete with a 1/10.
Get a tt01 if you just wanna try it out. Get something better like a tc4 (300bux shipped from tower) if you want quality and an awesome chassis if you ever want to race.

Well that makes too much sense to ignore.
1/10 it is...
I really like the HPI Stage D with Sprint 2 chassis.
Frontline has one with a Mazda RX8 shell that I can't stop drooling over. I think my minds made up.

Hey just realised that's what you got! Can hardly read that light coloured lettering!
So you happy with it then? What's the Stage D got over the stock Sprint 2 chassis apart from the motor?

The stage-d is the same as the sprint 2 except the motor and additional graphics (which I love). Oh, and it comes with drift tyres and grip tyres which is a great bonus. Saves you about 70bux (tyres/wheels/foams).
As others have pointed out, belts have the problem of getting rocks stuck in the gears. I haven't experienced it yet, but I did ages ago when I had a Pro3. But, I didn't find it a big deal.
One thing I did notice, is the kit seemed very noisy at first. I'm sure I had the mesh right. It seems to have quietened now though.
The motor is quite decent. In fact, even with my 6cell batt (I was running 7cells in the video I linked to) it kicks around at an impressive rate (and I'm somewhat hard to please). I'll be sticking with 6cells for now.

At frontline it's $269 for Stage-D versus $219 for standard Sprint 2...
Where did you get yours?

stanbridges (I couldn't wait for an overseas order). Cost me 280.
Sprint2 might only be 219, but factor in the motor/decals/extra wheels/tyres and it's not the better deal. That's only if you care about those things

with the stage-d...i must say it's got it;s design faults.
crazy arm hang outs [some wheels don't like fitting],
diff rock sucking & annoying lack of heat motor heat-sink area.
...try and raise the ride height with the inner holes on the sus arm. [yeeoww!]
...plus some other stuff that gets me goat.
other than that. the sprint 2 handles drift like a dream....i love the way it handles. :-)
- but if i had the choice to go back on my stage-d purchase, i would have bought just the sprint2 kit. only because i have lotsa wheels and will put ABS on fer drifting anyways.
annnd i never used the gfx that came with the kit, but justo's looks wikkid - i kinda wish i had. :-(
[some of em made it too the AE86...hehe]

Well its done. HPI Stage D Mazda RX8 is on the way... My LHS showed me his HPI cars and I was sold. Great looking cars and ideal for drift or race.

ive had my stage d silvia for a while now and i agree with everything justo has said jim007. it is very impressive straight out of the box, only problem is the front tyres grind a bit against the shocks, either get larger diameter wheels or spacers to widen the track. other than that the car rules! hehehe

I tried Stanbridges once, seem to be anti customer service unless they SEE $400 or so hanging out ya wallet!
