How are you guys , a while ago i posted some pix of my car whn i just had it lowered , anyway , ive just gotten it back this week lowered even more .
Its a Mazda Tribute that at 1 stage you could get 2 fists through the arches and now you cant even put your finger in it .
Forst pix was standard , second was when first lowered 2 days after i got the rims and 3rd pix is the now as its seriously dumped on its ass ( but also seriously needs a wash ) .
Its below legal limit and if you use the size of the tow bar as a guide , you will work out that not even a can of coke will fit under the chassis .

Looks interesting anyways :)

yeah JD , all the tributes and escapes ( pretty much exactly the same ) have the rear drums .
BB , yes , would have been allot cheaper but with the extra weight of the congrete and the price of fuel at the moment here at $1.38 per litre , it will pay itself off this way ... lol .
1 thing i must admit though now is that there is no suspension at all , shocks and springs were changed but its as tough as a mother ****er now but i can assure you of no body roll and theres 1 merge on our freeway down here thats heaps long and veers right and is pretty testing and when i had the VT SS i could hug it just on 140kph ( and i do mean just hug it ) , considering this car here now obviously still being taller than the VT , i got it to 120ks this morning and when i took it around standard stock , forget about even trying to touch 80ks with it so handling wise its just jumped another level all together . Obviously a mix of tyres as well as ive got 255s now on it as apposed to the 185s i think it came with standard
so its rock hard?....not good for cruising :P

ill wait for a few more responses but 1 thing your not taking into account bages is that the tyres are low profile Michelin 4x4 , not the standard low profile youd run on a commo etc .

hehe , their Michelin Diamaris 255/50R /20 ( identical to the ones on the Porche Ceyanne ) .
There is someone here in this forum that sells tyres so knows the truth when i say that the tyres alone cost more than that special you quoted with rims bages ... lol .
YOur right though , it takes allot of tyre to fill those wheel arches hence why i keps going lower and lower with the suspension cause to go to 21 inch rims was out of my league price wise .
SOCCER MUM...
lol, sorry. that looks pretty gangster, you should get a maroon with gold stich interior.

yes and no king and again i mean no disrespect to you as you know were cool .
Im 33 and have been driving a van for work since i was 18 and i hate them and have had enough in every respect . The reason behind me getting a 4wd is for 2 reasons .
1 .. i watch too much TV and love bling so thought it would be a great project and let me tell you that the looks on the faces of 90% of p platers etc is priceless when they see it . It actually brings convo as allot of people will stand around and talk bout it as its unseen on this model ( there was allot of work done in the rear to shorten a swing arm to bring the camber under the guards but thats not my forte so dont know exactly what or how but did require a certificate ) . 3 weeks ago our local Mazda dealer had a special going for some thing or another and placed my car in the middle of the show room so its a simple trophie for me at this stage . Everyones got rexis , commos etc , you have to really do something extreemly bling to turn heads as its too common .
2 .. The rear seats are pretty much folded down permanantly so i can get my stock etc in there . A station wagon didnt have the room i needed , this just worked out perfectly and once again , after so many years in a van every day , i finally wanted a bit of luxury as apposed to that same crap look and feel that every van has had doesnt matter what year it came out .
This is the reason im in a 4wd , i dont care for off road , i just want heaps of room in the car for my stuff and also for it to bear the weight of what i carry .
Also on another note , last week i had to pick up 10 bags of cement and 23 boxes of tiles , thats exactly 545kg ( bit over half a tonne ) and my car dropped only about half an inch , if i had have put that load into a rexy , it would have been rubbing its belly into the ground , my brother inlaw weighs in at just over 100kg ( hes a fat **** ) and looking behind his mates VX , you can allready see the lean so imagine 5 of him in there and thats a big car .. lol .
To each their own , i love the look of a dumped car and especially 4wds dumped , they just look more solid in my opinion but hey , as i said , to each their own and i respect yours .

hey balistc , its gonna look mad and in my opinion the less gap between the arch the better .
On another note , i know you dont get me wrong in wot i said but just wanted to say that ive got nothing against the rexis but i just mean that it takes allot more than slapping some rims and lowering to make it stand out from the others , they just need a bit more work to make them look individual .

gotta love drum brakes....

whats rong with drum brakes ? only the rears .. fronts are upgraded , rememeber 80%-90% of braking is yr fronts
drum brakes are gay :)
Not only do they not stop you as well... especially if ur braking a lot, and they end up doing nothing, cos they've overheated..
but with a nice set of mags, disc brakes just look so much better :)

There is a huge 'small ute' following in Canberra. Every friday at the car wash there are about 5-6 of them with the hydrolics and custom everything.
Some of them drop so low they cut holes in the tray to fit the diff ;)

How do you guys get on with the cops with those car tyres & rims on your mini trucks? The guys here are having BIG trouble (mainly tyres), being made to remove them as they aren't rated to handle the weight the ute is. We've been on the the tyre manufacturers but no one makes a tyre to fit those rims that can satisfy the weight requirements. I think you can get the truck re-rated to a lighter payload but they means getting it re-homologated through transport, govt depts...red tape...too hard!!!
remotebandit
11-09-2005, 04:41 PM
4orce , mine are Michelin Diamaris 4x4 255/50/20 , if Porche and BMW use them on their 4wd then id assume their rated ... lol .
Also , as far as weight goes , my mazda weighs 100kg less than a clubsport and over 200kg less than wot a BA ford weighs .
no issues with mine mate , as long as the whole lot is inside the guard and speedo is correct whats the problem . the pieces of shit tyres that came with my car standard are good for motor bikes in my opinion so why would wider tyres cause issues , anyway , proof is in handling as i can actually grip ALLOT better now so naturally wed assume thats safer . I have been pulled over for other issues since having these and no ones said Jack .
4orce
11-09-2005, 09:59 PM
It's not what your car weighs that is the issue, it's the trucks potential payload...about 1.5 tonne plus the car's weight I do believe - just a little more than a commodore or falcon. I know the car's curb weight is lighter but loaded to it's gross max it's MUCH heavier...
A ute gets away with it cause they can only carry 1 tonne max, mini truck is another story - check it out before the coppers check you out... !lmao
slylux
11-09-2005, 10:03 PM
, even with load rated tyres cant run 20"s nor can i run 245 at front and 285 rear , and if they dont defect the tyres they will find something else .. so might as well give em a reason , that is easily fixed ( bolt on the stockers and go over pits )
remotebandit
11-09-2005, 10:18 PM
They are very good points 4orce considering the cheap tyre imports coming in these days .
I dont claim to know everything but assumed that these tyres being on the high end 4wd ( porche , merc , VW ) then they would be safe .
Anyway , did take your advice and did a check up now on its rating for my own curiosity and im far ahead on safety . It claims my tyres ( michelin diamaris 255/50/20 ) have a load index rating of 109 which according to the Michelin website give me just over 1 tonne per tire , hence 4.1 tonnes evenly distributed so i can pretty much be sure my transmission will give way before the tyres pop .
http://www.michelin.com.au/tyres/4x4_diamaris.asp
http://www.michelin.com.au/tyres/tyreBasics_speedRating.asp
Very interesting points though 4orce .
On another note though and id love to hear what you think about this , lets say youve got a car putting out 300kw at the wheels , surely if that car bagged it up hard , this would cause more strain on rim and tyre on the car than a heavy payload .
Im not testing or giving you shit 4orce :) , just curious on your opinion .
Adam .

11-09-2005, 10:26 PM
so would yr 4wd with 20's be picked on by the cops ?
remotebandit
11-09-2005, 10:36 PM
lol , well not for the wheels anyway , their tucked inside the guards and the speedo is spot on ( well according to GPS ) and ive just worked out my rating is fine on the tyres but yes , i am sitting a touch low as a can will hit a couple of points under the car so thats my only issue . As i said earlier , i have been pulled over for other reasons and not even questioned .
remotebandit
11-09-2005, 10:39 PM
sorry stylux , i mis read your comment , as far as being picked on ... no , its been lowered for nearly a year and i have only been pulled over for something stupid on my behalf . Its gone down just under an inch again last week so well see how this now goes but not too different from b4 so i cant see any diff now from then .
you know whats a cool ute (replying to the earlier posts)

11-09-2005, 10:54 PM
ahh i see .. >>> slylux not stylux <<< i ran 18" s on my for about 1 year , also the non engineer passed 400 hp donk .. but maybe i just been lucky , my mate did same conv as me , he got pinned by cops and had to get it all engineered inc 18"s ( in a hilux 2wd too ) so engineer passed the 18"s with no special tyres ,, also as a driver i know to be careful about loading up the ute .. and with 400 hp its not like its a work horse .. i use it to cart my motox bike to and from racing.. ( 200kg maxx ) car weighs 1400kg , plus say 2 ppl , no where near 2 tonne .. each tyre/rim is 650 kgs , not only that , im sure tyres companies are like crane companies with load ratings .. not like as soon as u go 1kg over there rating they will fail .. most would be tested to more than double there load rating b4 failure .. as same with crane and lifting gear . anyway nice ride remotebandit .. need more diff hot cars , getting sik of skylines, s13's , etc etc

balistc your not that old so how did you afford to buy such a car? And you have spent a heap on mods too.
I'm 22, so I'm not *that* young either...although I did get the car when I was 19.
I can afford to buy such a car because I work hard :D
I borrowed the money from my family for the car, but I did pay them back for it, and all the mods were paid cash...took me 3 years to get all the mods on it, I didnt do it all at once :)
4orce
12-09-2005, 06:53 AM
The 300kw would depend on the car's weight. Most cars would just light up the tyres and therefore not really put any stress on the tyre on the tyre tread - as it gets left on the road !silly
If you look at a drag car the walls are very soft and the spinning of the tyres uses centrifugal forces to take the pressure off the tyre. A loaded truck (or trailer) never gives the tyres relief, they're always under load - more so in cornering where are have been know to roll off the rim. If you look at the specs of the higher horesepower cars you'll see that must have a VR rated tyre, the normal HR tyres would see you with no insurance if you had an accident (insurance companies are good that way).
As far as wheels go, different states have different lays and some do allow the larger rims. Qld will only allow you to have a rim 1 inch larger than the factory one. Generally you can get away with 2 but they are recently starting to crack down on the larger rims. They also don't seem to like a different size tyre / rim front to rear unless your particular car came that way from factory.
The biggest problem you may have is with your insurance company, check to see if you have an accident you'll be covered. It's a bit hard to change them before they see them if the car's a write off. They didn't like me for simple things like lowering and extractors??? All things that made the car safer, they just like to take the fun out of it...
!devil
BTW thanks for the link for the tyres. I'll pass it on to the mini truck guys I know, it might just be what they're looking for to get Qld Transport off their case... !super
lets talk tyre size in the oppisite direction.
does anyone know whats illegal in regards to larger offroad tryes and rims. say, could i run 40inch super swampers legally?
also, what about suspension lifts...whats the legal maximum height allowed??
remotebandit
12-09-2005, 10:24 PM
lol @ ned , well as far as i know , as long as their tucked under the guards and you can get a can of coke under the chassis your safe ... hehe .
Dont know about legal height , thats an interesting 1 .
Hey 4orce , going back to legal size , i did enquire today and there is no 1 inch max from stock down here so dont know why this law is up there . In saying this , i remember in my early days , i used to be with GIO insurance and yes , they would not insure anything over 1 inch from original spec , i am now with a mob called shannons insurance ( no one would help me for insurance when i had the SS so gave them a go and it actually worked out cheaper than insuring my 2000 magna that i was paying with GIO , go figure )
The day i got the rims , these were added to my policy and they were also made aware of it being lowered and i have just checked my policy and it is also noted on there for both issues but Shannans are known for modified vehicles so i assume this is all normal for them .
well with the 40inchers and a 6 inch suspension lift and a 4 inch body lift im sure i will fit a tinny underneath the chassis...or a whole carton.

13-09-2005, 07:41 AM
Not sure about 40 inch tyres etc, check with the transport dept in your state. Qld have always been a pain for mods. I started a street machine club about 15 years ago up here and the guys in Tweed could do s*%t loads more (legally) than we could. They were able to get engineers reports on mods and that was fine.
With regard to Shannons, the guys in the rod club up here have had a heap of drama getting any money out of them when they had a problem, pretty keen to take your moula though, just be aware... You may have no probs at all with yours, just they did...
Modding cars is a heap of fun and I reckon in a lot of cases makes the car better for handling. Pain in the ass but when, the moment you drive out of your drive you in a convoy...your car...followed by...local police dept...
We used to take our cars to Lakeside Raceway a few times a year and wring their necks. It was interesting to see what improvements we could do between events.

Hahahah, Amanda was standing behind the camera..you can see her Mazda3 SP23 in the reflection of the building behind my car ;)
Yeah the rims are 18s, Work VS-XX 3 piece rims. Lowered on Kings Superlow springs, and yeah I polished the car and rims before the photos were taken :D
This baby, and the babe who sits in the passenger seat, are my real pride and joys.
My RCs always take a back seat to the 1:1 scale....I forked out $300 for cleaning products the other day, without even blinking an eye, and she is sitting at Speedworks at the moment with a coolant leak, waiting to be fixed. I wont even flinch when I see the bill either, whatever the car costs to fix or to maintain, I pay without asking any questions (as long as its not a blatant rip off...I still shop around!)
Here are a few more....there were about 180 photos taken, all on a Nikon D90S Digital SLR (my mate Tom is a freelance photographer and writer for Perth Street Car magazine). The pics were nearly 3mb each so I had to resize them!!
