Last night I paid my obligatory visit to Ryper Hobbies to help with track work.. only to slowly but surely end up being convinced to go with Dave, Rob and little Ben to PRECC in maylands for some on-road carpet tourer racing! urgh... I really wasnt going to go, coz I've never raced the new on-road tourer, and hadn't even set it up or tuned it yet.

Never the less I was quickly convinced to go up for some racing, just as well, I felt like I needed a fix for some reason..

I managed to run about 5 practice laps before my first qualifier and boy was it wierd! (i've seriously never run on-road before).. so wildly different to anything I've been used to..

First qualifier and I had tyre problems (rear end was very very loose) and I qualified 4th out of 7 or 8 in my group. I changed back to the losi tyres that come with the kit and run my battery placement slightly different, and in the next qualifier TQ'd :) wow? !clap

After qualifying I asked the race organiser to bump up into a more experienced group to make things more interesting... this wasnt a problem (thanks organiser man!).. despite TQ'ing, I had to start at the back of the grid in the first final to be fair.. these guys were faster, which was cool, more streamlined traffic, less prangs.. after two laps I managed to find the lead through the pack and held it for the rest of the race.. was a lot of fun and by now (my third race) I'd figured out how this carpet sh1t works... :)

2nd and last final, I started on the start of the grid, and managed to keep the lead for the entire race taking the win by a lap or two (not sure).. got my consistancy down to 0.5 in the last race, with some much smoother driving than previous runs.. (and much less knocks and kerb swipes, hehehe !gay ). I believe I ran a 21lapper on the last race.

The people at the track seemed fairly friendly, and some folk helped me out with a few things. thanks Chen for charging a cell pack for me (you -must- pre-charge your packs before attending PRECC, there are no breaks between rounds.. (3 mins or so)... now I know). Thanks Jay Toon for a couple of tips, heheheheehe.. thanks dave for tyre warmers.. thanks Rob the Hack for being a big HACK.

I whipped out my camera to get a few happy snaps, but as soon as i switched it on, it decided to switch off, dead batteries! doh.

I did get one pic of my pit table on my camera phone, but in crappy tiny resolution! oops (forgot to change the res!)..

check out the tyre warmers, haha, so cute :P

this on-road stuff aint too bad. I'm not getting too excited yet though... we will see how the ryper track goes. I can see r/c burning a hole in two pockets instead of one now... !lol

problem with on-road is... there's no jumps, and there's nothing sweeter than getting AIR! haha..

Damn you're already well ahead of me in the learning on road stakes. Tyre warmers are just to complex for me, not even up to this motor lathe stage, heck, I changed my first set of brushes last night! Spose it's my own fault, but must admit, I'd like to be learning quicker than I am.

My first ever appearance on-road (nitro) I got put in with the BIG BOYS in the pro class as I had a pro chassis. I was HOOKED hard. These things are FAAAAAST. Nothing has given me more of a "semi" (in rc) than on-road. That faithful day was only end of August and since then, I've poured $$$ into it (and climbing) and I haven't even looked at my off road stuff. Hell even at the woarma states I ran someone elses truck.

I like the idea of nitro, but it'd be far cheaper for me to get into another electric since i have spare speedy/servo/motor/reciever. Basically just up for the cost of a chassis and some spares.

hahaha.. oh noooo. I dont wanna get hooked into on-road.. the dollars is killing me as it is... damn. I'm already jugling high speed servo's and ESC's between my off/on-road cars as it is.. hrmmm.

I raced on-road for a little while, but always seemed to break something. I'm seeing how I handle in the off-raod, hopefully I wont break so much (Different mindest now to then). And then I MIGHT look at on road again, not sure though

Lack of jumps? Hit the pipe when cornering at high speed, problem solved.

Carpet is easy on the tires. A set of rubbers should last you a while.

I used to run on Tuesday night until the "unnamed" organiser decided to chuck a barny at a marshell because he wasn't fast enough turning his car over. This mind you was on a club night - no points what-so-ever.

Maybe i'll just have to cave in to BB's pressure and get a xxx4g+ :P

every1 is getting 4wd off-road... YEAH! haha

BB, I've heard a lot about this particular person and the 'barny's'...

Rob the hack had a bit of a confrontation last night :P or should I say a few friendly words were flying around during the race upstairs.. rofl.

The pipes on the track move all the time, the first thing I thought of was.. why not just put some velcro strips on the pipes, it will somewhat stay put on the carpet.. hrmm.

saw a few cars get 'air' last night.. big air too! :)

as for rubber tyres. I've pretty much destroyed a whole set of fairly brand new tyres, in one race meet. (they've got nasty wear marks anyway) but they were hooking up real nice. other cars were hooking up awesome... someone mentioned 'schumacher carpet dragon's', and a few other tyres...

Heh, doesn't Rob have "friendly words" with most people? :P

ok were do we get rubbers and how much? now i am waiting for someone to say " you get rubbers from the chemist durrrrr" so lets skip that and how much for a good cheap set, i have heard rubbers are a lot better on the carpet than foam....

James

precc rules are you have to run rubbers (in the stock classes) some of the stock classes have a control type too.

Ryper has pretty much the whole range of TAKE-OFF CS rubber tyres... I believe dave and others run CS-22's... you could also run CS-27's..

if you were to run rubber at ryper, you'd run 27's or 32's depending on the track temp.

I'll likely be buying a set of CS-22's for the next time I goto precc.. :)

I used Take-off's on my nitro, they're a brilliant tyre, belted and nice and sticky.

For rubber and inserts go see Sam at Perth RC. Sam races at PRECC from time to time too.

Perth RC does the Sorex range. I used to run their 20 and 24 tyres.

Sorex 24's work well on carpet but the grip they provide fall off faster in comparison to cs-22's. The tamiya medium narrow type A's also are a good carpet tire.

As for carpet dragons, they are a unbelted treaded rubber tire and They offer a insane amount of grip. Its much like driving foams on carpet. Its possible to traction roll on dragons.
