with the state titles last month done and gone, and 2005/2006 summer season fast approaching, it was a good reason to pull down my B4 buggy and rebuild it.

sometimes nothing can be wrong with the buggy or car, but it is the bits you cant see or attend to during a race meet that need to be checked for wear and tear.

the stripping down was done on a sunday afternoon, and i spent a couple of hours each night after work for a week (5 days) to put her back together replacing anything that was bent, worn, or shimming up any arm that was loose.

here are some pics starting from the strip down to the rebuild...

enjoy :p

the front end is now cleaned and put back together, after this shot i lost sunlight pretty quickly and you'll notice the flash being used in the pic after ....

last pic for the Sunday, sunlight was gone, and i called it quits after this one. now, the shocks are re-oiled and the the turnbuckles have new ball cups all 'round (most were bent). front end is now 100% re-assembled.

ok. the rear of the buggy was pulled to bits and layed out on a towel. since i was working after work hours i did all of this work indoors and cleaned bits in the laundry sink. tip: have the plug in the sink incase any small bits pop off and that way they wont fall down the drain.

rear end bits pulled off the buggy:

rear arms cleaned and back on the buggy. both hinge pins were replaced here. motor teflon shims (white thin ones) were used to shim up the rear arms, i think i had to insert 1 on each side to take up the slop.

nahh it was all good at the end of each day after i cleaned up my mess 8)

the gearbox was next to be done and truth be told i was going to leave it untouched but it was james who recommended i open it merely for inspection.

i found 2 bearings were caked with mud on the outside, a quick wisk over with a toothbrush and the crap was gone.

gearbox pics:

with the mechanics done, front and rear end completely cleaned and shimmed it was then time to move onto the electrics. take note of the instant mess of wire and crap needed to make this job right.

i was very happy with the wiring job in the buggy. cables were neat, battery and motor wire length was spot on. the soldering job turned out well and i only used a cheapo soldering iron.

motor install time. before this i had stripped down the motor and cleaned it out pretty heavily with motor/electric cleaner. that stuff is wonderful, but expensive.

motor installed, w00p, getting close to finishing it now:

so the car is now finished, i think it was thursday night when i took these shots. did you see the wiring? wasnt it great!! i spent quite some time making sure it all fit right...

... and the following night i blew the speedy. killed it. i had not even got it on the track for a run and it popped. i have a feeling the servo drew too many amps because its a high torque servo and the instructions recommend a speedy with 3amp BEC. well, the futaba MC330CR only handles 0.5amp and it was when i was adjusting steering alignment and giving the servo a good back-and-forward thumping that everything just shut down.

now, when i connect the speedy, it gets warm at one certain point on the PCB but there are no lights, no activity, no power going to the receiver - she's a goner! all the work on the wiring for NUTTING!!

very cool matto, with bearings, hit them with some wd40/rp7, clean them right up, you can even put them into a small container with wd40 in the bottom and give them a good washing. then when you remove them, dry them up and give them a light oiling.. :)

this is what my XXX-Sg+ looks like this morning (Im changing the chassis over and adding alumn pivot mounts) :
