View Full Version : Tamiya M-03 mini racing at Ryper
James
07-12-2005, 11:23 AM
Looks like there -might- be a Tamiya Mini class at Ryper for next season... racing standard M-03 tamiya chassis, silvercan or sport tune motor, the packaged ESC, etc... I'm unsure of the rules of the class as yet, but could be fun. I'm keen to grab a kit and put it together for some fun racing hehe..
I don't have the 100% on it yet, but it was mentioned... any1 who wants to do some cheap on-road racing, this would be a neat way to get in.. heaps of fun too hehehe..

Be nice if they did, would be something of interest to me. the kits are only around $120 from HK. (Or $135 for the M-03L)
James
07-12-2005, 11:44 AM
yeh.. rcmart has em at $99usd, and they pop up on ebay a lot. I know Dave will be ordering a pile. they wont cost much even from him... they come with everything except radio gear and battery.
I'm thinking just for some fun and some giggles would be good. and the more the merrier, stuff 12 or more on the track at once hahaha, carnage!

Might be able to push for a mini class at the carpet club too? (Might as well get the most out of them - good for winter)

Sounds good to me, ditch the TT01 and play with these a while *yay*
yay! run the Alfa / mini club races ! Im tempted to get an alfa (since i had a real one) if it gets going!

hey James, if ur getting one from rcmart, lets do bulk to save on shipping costs! haha

i am concerned it will come and go like the Mini-T fad. like Mini-T's, i'll sit this one out and see if its still going after 6 months of it "taking off"
nexxus
07-12-2005, 02:05 PM
Yeah but at the end of the day you can still slap a stock motor in the M-03 and run 1:10 Stock etc so it's not such a big risk.
James
07-12-2005, 02:17 PM
exactly. it's a 1:10 car, not a different 'fad' if you like. theyve been running them over east and over seas for years as part of the TCS, etc.
For the investment (very little $$$) I dont see why not, it will be fun :) and a great even level of racing, even more close racing compared with stock motor racing, coz you cant touch the motors at all.. (silver can and sport tuned).
I'm not going to convince you to race one Matto, you'll make your own decision. I had no regrets with my mini-T, building it and hopping it up is half the fun. if/when you get bored, you move on. its what r/c is about.
I can picture a bunch of tamiya mini's belting around on the track haha, so much fun.. I'm looking forward to it.
as for buying one, I'll probably just buy one from Ryper when dave gets them in rather than ship one in, it's not really worth it, what will I save, $20, $40, who knows.
If anyone else is keen for some mini racing, maybe we organise a 'mini build up' event? all get together and assemble them, hehehe.. i dunno
I'll have to dig out a servo, a receiver and build/buy some cheapy unmatched stick packs :)
silver can / sport tune use stuff all batt capacity, should be able to run these mini's really cheaply, get a bulk pack of 2000mah or simular stick packs.. :)
I'm already thinking about how I wanna paint the shell? hehe Monte Carlo rally stylez? "Italian Job" styles? hrmmm
the M0-3 is the original, the MO-3L is the newer kit, which has a slightly altered chassis from the MO-3 that allows you to mount the electronics lower in the chassis for better COG, newer kit also obviously has the new shape BMW mini body.
already spent most the day surfin' and reading up on em.
exciting :) and best of all, cheap to get into
coutn me in for the mini James! !super
oh btw, mini is fwd, and true to real life, guilia is rwd
James
07-12-2005, 02:37 PM
hehe yeah, FWD.. a whole different r/c setup, apparently they even understeer like a 1:1 fwd car would.. :) more stuff to tune.. hehe

I'm in! (Dosh prending) I'll pull the radio gear, ESC and metal servo from the TT01 (and the oil shocks) ball race the little bugga and go nuts! Be good to see some FUN racing and not so serious stuff! Good lil hack class :)

seems we may have enough racers here to fill a race grid already! hehe.. we'll start the "TA Mini Cup", and do a points system, and have prizes at the end, etc.. haha. TA sponsors the mini class at ryper on-road.. or something. now I'm just thinking... urgh

I couldn't help myself. I bought the kit today from Ryper. Dave's already sold 3, he's getting four more kits in soon.
great price too! $165, or $175 with bearings to suit :) pretty neat!!
cant wait! hahaha. comes with everything except radio gear and batteries. nice.

it is absolutely official. There IS a Tamiya M03L mini class at ryper for next season of racing, this means the class will be with points, etc.. much like the TT-01 class, which I'm unsure if TT-01 will still be a class or not :)
I got my mini.. time to assemble.. (when i find time haha)

thats uber quick Mr James :D

Are they gonna run the minis on the same day as regular onroad? I'm gonna be racing onroad anyway, so might look at a mini. certainly cheap and fun!

07-12-2005, 09:51 PM
I think from memory there is one on the shelf, but not sure how much it is. Don't recall if it's a new or old body type.
I might have to get it on saturday though... my xmas present :D
pretty sure their is two one old kit and one expert built one.
BALISTC
08-12-2005, 09:22 AM
Very tempting to buy one, but I'm scared I'll buy it and 3 months later, everyone will sell up and I'll be the only one with one :P
James
08-12-2005, 09:48 AM
There is an older kit which has the older shape body shell (old classic mini) it's the M-03. this chassis is slightly different to the latest one. very simular with only subtle differences. Ultimately your better off with the new chassis (kit) it allows you to more easily position your electronics lower in the chassis for lower COG.
I'll clarify the tamiya mini situation at Ryper.
There IS a mini class that WILL be run WITH the on-road racing. Just like there is mod, stock, tt-01, ladies class, novice, etc... the MINI class is a GO FOR THE WHOLE SEASON. This means it will be a class with points (part of the championship series, just like the other classes)
consider this an absolute go. As I've already said, three have been sold already, Dave's already ordering more kit's in. The price is very reasonable.
The kit comes with everything except batteries and radio gear. It even comes with a motor and ESC!
I mentioned previously that the kit cost is $165. if you want bearings it's $2 per bearing on top of that cost. we originally thought there was only 5 bearings requried, meaning you'd pay $175 all up, but there is infact 12 bushes that you can replace with bearings. so you'd be paying $165 for the kit (down from $185 sticker price), and $2 per bearing (x12) on top of that if you want bearings, it's not required, but I'm sure you would agree bearings are nice :)
The kid is pretty cool, and definately different, esp being front wheel drive, hehehe.
Dave is ordering a variety of option parts, racing slicks, etc, it's all 100% go. I can only think this is going to be a very fun class to race in. Especially with everyone running the good ole tamiya stylez, stick battery packs, 540 motors... i cant wait!! (perhaps thats why i bought one already! hehehe)
might have time to start assembling 2nite, dunno.
the new racing season starts early next year. Grab a kit before then and join in!
Dave and Rob the Hack from Ryper are both going to race in the class too... so give em hell! hehehe

Nah I'm staying with it, bit of retro fun! PS James how did you figure $10 in bearings, that'd be what? 5 bearings? My understanding is it's a TL01 gearbox so that needs 6-8 bearings then 2 in each wheel hub so 8 there as well. Correct me if I'm wrong!

Tamiya body shells are excellent. the detail is awesome. it also comes with body mirrors and other bits that you stick onto the shell to make it look 'real' :) what colour to paint it? hrmmmm. might go for a modern 'john cooper signature' design...

quite right. I was wrong, there is 12 plastic bushings that you can replace with bearings. and two smaller metal bushings that you could also replace if you wanted to, but i dont see a requirement. Would be ideal to replace the 12 plastic ones.. :)
nexxus
08-12-2005, 09:56 AM
Yeah typically in a Tamiya you'd do the plastic ones only. so only 4 in the gearbox then? Interesting! I have already looked at Alloy suspension arms at RCMART I wanna bling Mini!
James
08-12-2005, 10:09 AM
here's some basic rules that will be sorta what is run at Ryper, unconfirmed, but something along these lines. I honestly dont think it's really going to be that strict, or enforced, I think the main rule is using 540 motors.. :)
Tamiya Mini
Chassis
Tamiya M01, M02 or M03 series “Front Wheel Drive chassis only.
NO chassis modifications for weight reduction allowed
Motors
540 Silver can Johnson / Mabuchi standard replacement metal endbell motor or Tamiya Sport Tuned motor only.
Motors may not be modified or tampered with in any way.
Tyres
Rubber tyres only permitted as Manufactured, fitted to small size Mini wheels. Tyres may not be Modified or Tampered with in any way, Including 1 single, standard insert per rim.
Bodyshells
Mini Cooper bodyshells only.
Gearing
May run maximum sizes as specified in Tamiya Instruction Manuals. (Speed Tuned Gear Sets not allowed for these cars.)
Hop-Ups
ESC, bearings, any Tamiya hop-ups are permitted with the exception of speed-tuned gears.. (this means you can use any brand esc and bearings, you can upgrade shocks with tamiya oil shocks, etc)
Kits and hop-ups must be assembled as per manufacturers instructions.
Battery
3000mah or lower capacity stick pack's. (suggested by Ryper)
* Generally most mini classes only allow a 2400mah cell pack :)
KingBob
08-12-2005, 10:20 AM
Cool, sounds like a good cheap bit of fun. No point blinging them up either, any ali would just weight it down. Though i'd add a set of TRF shocks to it.
nexxus
08-12-2005, 10:22 AM
On an M03 FWD you can't speed gear it anyway, I think it lets you run an 18 or a 20 pinion thats it, I'd run the 18
nexxus
08-12-2005, 10:23 AM
It's weight vs strength with aluminium isn't it? I'd do the suspension arms just to stop me breakin them
KingBob
08-12-2005, 10:26 AM
Stock Tamiya arms are nigh on indestructable! They're basically a solid piece of plastic! I'm sure even you'd have trouble breaking them nexxus! lol

James
08-12-2005, 10:29 AM

I've been racing these for 12 months now. Heres what i've found.
Oil shocks - useless, too much traction (on our track anyway)
Wheels/tyres - HPI X-pattern. The Tamiya lasted about 2 race days, the HPIs have been on for about 10 months and still great, havn't even rotated them yet so the rears are like new.
Body - get the short chassis, handling is not as good (hardly noticeable) but Mini bodies are readily available from HPI and Frewer.
Heaps of fun, with identical cars you learn so much about the benifits of smoother better lines through corners.
Best price i know of is from RCSquare.com AUD$94 and $14 for a complete bearing set.
Bought four off him (plus heaps of other stuff) with no problems ever
Best smile for money rc you can get.

I've never waited longer than 7 days
$97.92 for the short chassis (real Mini) with Tamiya ESC
$14 Bearings
$74.80 Futaba Transmitter
$60 Delivery
$246.72 Total
Just be patent!
Its worth it.
If you buy other stuff, rims, tyres etc it makes it much cheaper as you get more for the same postage cost

Mini T's died because people stopped racing them, if we keep racing a particular class (M03, TT01 etc) it'll keep the demand up there. TT01 is starting to die down as more people progress to higher levels, I think M03 has a bit of potential as a purely fun *lets go out and be stupid* class.

I just couldnt get a mini-t to 'jump' properly. no matter what I tried. you'd pull off one wicked awesome jump out of ten. very annoying. apart from that I had a lot of fun with mini-T.
M0-3, supported class at ryper, already know it will be popular just because of that... ryper on-road is very popular.. :)
four people i know of that already have purchased mini's to race ryper, so far. (could be more, dunno)..
was at ryper yesterday, overheard a ph convo with Tamiya distributer... hop ups, spares, tyres/wheels, etc, all coming to support the class. mint :)

update.
rules will be something like (unconfirmed):
original tamiya Mini M03/M03L chassis only (with no modifications or lightening) no mods to motor mounting location to fit larger pinions (20T is largest and is inc with kit, 18T recommended for sport tuned)
bearings allowed throughout
Tamiya rubber tyres to suit m-chassis ONLY at this stage
Silver can and sport tuned 540 motors only
oil shocks (any TAMIYA ONLY type) allowed
Any speed controller/receiver and servo allowed
BMW Mini or Rover Mini body shells ONLY (no other types)
Stick pack battery packs only. (1900mah's work great and are cheap)
Diff upgrades allowed.
Basically as long as your running the motor's that are allowed, and dont "modify" the chassis" all is good, you can hop it up, etc...
it's gonna be loads of fun, and pretty funny :) they look so funny booting around the track! haha
Season starts mid/late JAN. This is part of the Ryper on-road championship and there will be point scoring (if that interests you) meaning you could get an award at the end of the season, like any other class...
Ryper Hobbies will be ordering Mini kits as required. there are a pile IN stock at Ryper at the moment at a very very good price.

I'll take you down with my standard mini and freak silver can motor :)

Just put slicks on the mini with the retro Monte Carlo rims, cornering is definately a bit nicer, just used standard slicks, wonder if the hop up super slicks will be better still?
nexxus
25-12-2005, 12:56 PM
As long as I use original Tamiya wheels and tyres I am fine. I can't use HPI or stuff like that. Any hop ups have to be Tamiya.
nexxus
25-12-2005, 12:58 PM
I can see ppl reading this and saying "Oh thats just trying to sell more Tamiya bits" well maybe, but noone says I have to do it, and noone says where I have to buy them either. Also, I pretty much guarantee you the quicker cars may well be guys like Dave and James who are still running silver can, it's driver skill 95% and Car set up Hop/up 5% I'm just hedging my bets on my 5%!
by now, after racing as long as you have, your driver skill should be increasing.
whats the go?

Nexx, Yeah Racing are not original tamiya parts, that must mean you can't use them. This is suposed to be low cost racing after all.
PomAbroad
25-12-2005, 07:11 PM
we may not be able to police all upgrades, but try to keep it fair for the kids this class is aimed at. How will they feel with there stock mini's when they turn up and see a mini that is made of aluminium. Bling is good, but try to keep it in the light of what the rules are trying to achieve. Is this too much to ask?
nexxus
25-12-2005, 07:15 PM
Only yeah racing parts I have are bearings. Which when I asked Dave, was fine. I could go all out and do Yeah racing front and rear alloy hub carriers, suspension arms, hex nuts and the like, but I aint going to, it aint a legal upgrade!

I've got every YEAH RACING part available coming for my mini. But only because they sponsor me. otherwise i wouldnt have wasted my time. mini class is for fun.. fun fun. and fun. The only thing i'm looking forward to is seeing a big pile of mini's bumper to bumper on the track.. tailgating, etc haha, they look pretty funny.
the YEAH RACING parts are HEAVIER than the stock plastic items. hahaha. i can only assume
The rules that I have discussed with dave are that shocks, diff/gears, and tyres must be tamiya M-chassis. And only silver can and sport tuned motors are allowed (the motor rules are the main policed rules for the mini class)
im going to try the mini with and without the 'yeah racing' ally bits. I'll put money on the car being slower with the alumn bits on it. in any case, as i said, if they strictly arent allowed, i wont run them.... heh. all good.
RC_King, we really need to find the right tyre. are the slicks good or not? and tyre wear? coz the kit tyres lasted me about 6 batt packs, now they are completely bald. I think we want the 'type A slicks'. or the super reinforced radials. im happy with the kit tyres, but they simply dont last.
cant wait to race mini's.. fun! hahaha. im gonna be in tears of laughter I know it. I was when just Chen and I hit the track with ours... it's hillarious just watching them.
is there a printed set of defined rules?
James
28-12-2005, 07:45 PM
there are no printed rules for the class at Ryper. I did offer to write them up.
the rules are loosely covered in this thread, so i dont see a prob :)
Tyres = any tamiya M-chassis tyre. (there's five choices that im aware of)

28-12-2005, 08:12 PM
I'll run whatever rules are set down, but to be safe I am sticking to Tamiya hop ups at this point.
you have to define the rules. loose rules cause upsets. refer to emaxx @ 2005 wa states
nexxus
28-12-2005, 09:43 PM
At the end of it though all the hop ups won't make a lot of difference to a 540 motor, but it seems to be a lot of people offering a lot of interpretation on a vague point right now. I am working on "Tamiya hop ups only" as I was advised, if I am wrong, well, I'll change it back!
Birky
29-12-2005, 05:13 PM
The rules for Mini will be based upon, if not exactly the same as TCS Mini rules. They will be released very shortly.
nexxus
29-12-2005, 05:37 PM
The thing is noone knows what the rules are right now, and what is supposed to be a fun class is starting to be overanalysed. Personally I don;'t see how a 540 motor'd car will do a whole lot. I'll run whatever Ryper tells me is legal but until that is defined this arguement is pointless isn't it?
James
30-12-2005, 05:39 PM
agreed.. i think arguing about rules is a waste of time. The rules were always going to be TCS style, as per other mini classes around the state, etc... tamiya hop ups, tamiya wheels tyres, and silver can / sport tuned motors.. :) it's not hard.
im really looking forward to racing mini ! hahaha should be a laugh

back next sunday, with Mini and XRAY T2 in hand :)
hehehe, lets just hope we dont lose u James to the onroads. Just dont forget the smell of wet (or dry) dirt hahahah. But yeh, it was fun to watch the minis whipping round the track and u did real well James :)

I'll be playing nitro this year. I promised myself.
I race off-road and now on-road EP as it is. finding time for Nitro as well isnt going to be easy. I already know that this year I will sacrifice some of my off-road race time to race more on-road. It's where I want to be at the moment.
Maybe something like this:
odd Tuesdays: PRECC on-road carpet
odd fridays: WC off-road
Every Sunday where possible : Ryper on-road
(except WAORMA events)
dont want to neglect my home and wife by never being home :)
back on the subject of mini's, the Tamiya 1400nicd packs that matto lent me are awesome, they are old school too. real old school. but the power was insane! (compared to some 1900mah packs i recently bought on the cheap)
I dropped 2sec+ a lap using the tamiya packs!

09-01-2006, 11:59 AM
sports tuned is a better motor than silver can no question. My silver can has been 'prepped' somewhat. I treat it just like a stock motor, but dont take it apart :) gets the same cleaning/oiling treatment anyway..

You get enough wheelspin with a sportstuned motor and bald tires. Took the mini for a quick test hack and unsurprisingly its more eager to turn in during cornering.

Hey shadow, I saw a nice set of Tamiya TRF threaded touring shocks at PHC on saturday :D
ha! KB, thanks but ur too late. :D
Already replaced the 05's plastics with the TRF's
So, tried the 05's plastic CVAs on the mini... and it works a treat!
James
01-02-2006, 10:24 AM
shim the inside of the CVA's with rubber o-rings to bring the droop (and ride height) on the mini right down otherwise the CVA's will be too big and the shocks just wont work properly.
'super mini CVA's' are the go for mini.
Just maybe see how they go as they are, otherwise, fill them shocks with rubber o-rings hehe. there's little or no adjustment in the mini, so doing this is a good way to bring the car closer to the ground and make the shocks work a little better.
thanks for the tip James.
Ive taken all spacers off the shocks, and it seem to "look" right...arms look just flat to the chassis. Its definately taken a bit of the roll factor away comparing to the rubber dampers.. Handling seems fine too..
haha, dunno.. we'll see how she goes in a "real" run Sunday lol. Hell funny to drive though, i couldnt helped laughing whenever it did a "hop" over little mounds! !lmao
