As you may know i've started selling iWaver products.
http://stores.ebay.com.au/Azzachaz-Hobbies
Because I couldn't just let everyone else have all the fun I decided to treat myself to an iWaver 01 PRO and an iWaver 04 Bigfoot.
For those who dont know the iWavers are direct clones of the Kyosho Mini-Z family. They can use aftermarket parts which were made for mini-z's, are fully upgradable, and have spare part support.
This is how the 01 PRO arrived;

The box was smaller than I had expected, considering it is the Readyset version with a full size remote control

azzachaz
12-01-2005, 12:10 PM
I havn't takena picture of the control but I am told it is a OEM Futaba, probably the base model.
The 01 uses a regular set of crystals and can be operated by you normal Tx, or you can use the included Tx to control your other cars. When you see the 04 Bigfoot remote you will see why :)

I have heard people complain about the quality of the shell, mine arrived in good nick with good paint and stickers in the right place. No fitting issues what so ever.

inside the shell. It is made of a hard plastic. My first impression was that the material would be brittle, I have run it full speed into walls and poles without damage so I guess not.

The kit came almost ready to run. All I needed to do was put 4 AAA batteries in to car, 8 AA into the Tx, attach the aerial to the chassis with one screw, and put a mount (2 screws) on the nose of the chassis for the body to mount on

A cool thing about these cars is their adjustability and upgradability.
The kit comes with 3 sets of front springs (different hardnesses), 4 different toothed pinions, and some tools for taking off wheel nuts/pinions.

I have allready ballraced the car. I have ordered alloy wheel nuts, a ball diff, a motor heatsink and some other hop-up parts

The tyres are rubber. You can by different hardnesses and widths.
I have ordered some foam Power Tyres for maximum grip.
The harder rubber ones are better for drift :p

Anyhow, I really do like the iWaver. I can be used inside but still has the speed to run in the backyard or on the street. It does need a smooth surface to run on, rough surfaces are for the 04 Bigfoot

The 'PRO' part for the equation is the upgrade FETS powering the motor. Apparently these are good enough to handle a motor upgrade, but for very demanding motors a 'FET stack' is needed. THis is when you buy more FETS and solder them onto the bord on top of one another. People have speed measured their cars at 80km/h+ with FET modded/upgraded motor iWavers
e107_files/public/8_tn_iwaverreview_048.jpg
azzachaz
12-01-2005, 12:35 PM
I will keep mine a little more sedate for the moment. But the best thing is it is sooo cheap to buy and upgrade these cars.
Many people by an iWaver and mod the hell out of it. The usually can do this for under the price of a regular Kyosho Mini-Z ($200)

Why dont you "submit a review" for this product!? in the right hand side of the site... I'm doing the mini T review soon!
If you do the write up, and get it online, I'll edit the pictures into the review for ya

sure, I'll do the same for the 04 Bigfoot.
I tried the review but I didn't like the image handling, if you can do it for me that is cool

Well i've been running the car for a few days now and I am extremely impressed.
Using these:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=34063&item=5949169840
I get about 30 mins of continual use. I have three sets of batteries so I wont need to charge in between.
Quality wise I have been trying my hardest to break it so I could report back to you guys with the weak points.
The negative motor wire came loose, this was probably from me taking the motor out multiple times to change pinions and I havn't been too careful.
One of the side body mounts came off. I dab of Tarzans Grip has seen the mount better than ever.
Besides that it has been rock solid. The hard body does a really good job of protecting all the steering and suspension parts. I have jumped it off tables, off the top of my car (for drift :) ), I have slammed it into poles, and one of my kids stepped on it.
Still going strong.

DURABILITY UPDATE:
I decided to test out the cars durability and find out how reliable the iWavers are.
I set up a track in the backyard; around the bike, up the hill, around the wood, down the hill, between the chair legs, under the table, back around the bike :p
The ground was contrete with lots of those gaps between the slabs.
I ran the car through a fresh set of batteries (i got about 20mins of non-stop running) without a glitch.
I slammed the car into bricks, chair legs. I rolled it a few times around corners.
Still going strong. Only thing I have to show for it is the black rims have been scratched and have a white ring on them, and a few scratches on the corners of the car.

I can sell you guys the ready sets for $70 + $10 postage, and then free postage for any spares/hop-ups you buy at the same time.
Here is a pic of the Tx. It uses regular crystals (as does the car) so you can swap betwwen your other cars.

a few goodies arrived in the mail.....
A ball diff, X-Speed motor, Graphite H-Boards, Wide Tyre Set
e107_files/public/8_tn_iwaver01hopups_001.jpg
azzachaz
17-01-2005, 09:58 PM
First I installed the Ball Diff.
Pretty straight forward. Just put the axle though the motor case bearing where the original diff was and lock the opposite wheel hub with one of those helicoil grub screw things
e107_files/public/8_tn_iwaver01hopups_006.jpg
azzachaz
17-01-2005, 09:59 PM

Then I installed the motor.
It is called an X-Speed and promises a healthy speed increase.
Simple installation. Press fit and install motor cover. Screw two leads to the radio board.
e107_files/public/8_tn_iwaver01hopups_016.jpg
azzachaz
17-01-2005, 10:04 PM
The graphite H-Boards form the rear suspension of an iWaver01.
Thicker board is stiffer while the thin board is softer.
I will try all three to see the results.
e107_files/public/8_tn_iwaver01hopups_019.jpg
azzachaz
17-01-2005, 10:06 PM
You might have allready noticed the new wheels. They are the Wide set available from iWaver. The rear wheels are much wider than normal.
iWaver dont support these wheels with all chassis although the impreza shell give OK clearance.
e107_files/public/8_tn_iwaver01hopups_024.jpg
azzachaz
17-01-2005, 10:10 PM
So how does it go?
I was not prepared for what happened.
The car is now pretty much uncontrollable at full throttle.
Out on the street it gets to suchg a high speed you can turn because it will flip if it goes over a rough patch. :)
In the backyard the concrete is smoother so it runs heaps better but I dont have enough room to open her up. Cant wait to take her down to the track.
The car is definatly at the point where you have to have good throttle control.

I dont know of any dedicated tracks but you can make a track out of pretty much anything.

What other cars are available other than WRX???
azzachaz
19-01-2005, 06:32 AM
There are heaps.
the readysets for iWaver01's come in Porsche Concept GT,
GT40, WRX, Lancer EVO. These come in a few different colours each.
You can buy new shells though;
Audi TT, Merc CLK GTR, Dodge Viper, Ferrari, Porsche, Skyline GTR, Subaru.
Also, their are HEAPS for Kyosho Mini-Z Shells that you can get buy they are pricey.

Yeah, i would have but i didint have enough money in my netbank :/
Its all good though, getting alot of alkalines and some jaycar nimh's :)
azzachaz
19-01-2005, 04:23 PM
the alkalines wont be as good because their voltage sags under heavy load.
The NiMH batteries will be much better because they hold their voltage under load and hold it right until the end of their charge.
All thing being equal the high amp hour capacity ones (800/900mAh) will last longer but not deliver as high a current as the lower capacity ones (500-600mAh). I'm talking 5-10% though so probably not that important for this application.
go for the longest thread record azzachaz... do it mate, DO EEETT!

e107_files/public/8_iwaver01servogearset.jpg
azzachaz
20-01-2005, 07:39 AM
The 04 Bigfoot comes with servo saver because of the big wheels. They get ripped sideways all the time.
I haven't had a problem with the iWaver01 because the steering assembly is pretty much protected by the shell.
I'll make sure I keep a supply of gears available in the future.
toxxic
20-01-2005, 01:40 PM
Yeah, i was running without hte shell, thats what did it, smacking into the wall's etc...
Thanks azza - your the best!!!!
toxxic
20-01-2005, 09:10 PM
Well, i managed to get the epoxy just ight, so it seems to be holding pretty well now!
But i found another problem, the negative battery lead snapped, so i resoldered it and the positive lead, and im finding it much faster (give it a try).
i am finding my iWaver turns to the right, its damn anoying and hard to go straight (yes, i have the trim turned ALL the way). Any ideas on what it could be - it did this before i broke the gear too.
i am thining it either got to do with something in the steering servo, or the diff or perhaps weight distibution.
anyways, got any ideas?
azzachaz
21-01-2005, 07:28 AM
OK
2 Things to do:
1. Adjust the trim POT on the circuit board.
With the car and Tx turned ON, centre the steering trim on the Tx. Then lift up the 01 sticker on the chassis and located the Trim POT
e107_files/public/8_iwavertrimpothole.jpg
azzachaz
21-01-2005, 07:29 AM
Turning the screw in the hole sets the base line trim. Use it to line the wheels up fairly straight and then use the Tx to fine tune when driving
e107_files/public/8_iwavertrimpot.jpg
azzachaz
21-01-2005, 07:41 AM
2. Adjusting the Ball Diff
I found this made a HUGE difference to the way my car handled. Initially I had the ball diff wound up tight, this was good for cornering but I found that the car would spin out or turn under acceleration.
THE WAY I TUNED IT:
Turn the collar so that the diff is just snug against the O-Ring. Then hold the rear wheels with your fingers and give the throttle a buzz. The spur gear should spin by itself. Now tighten the collar 1/8th of a turn and try again. Keep doing this until the spur gear does not spin freely (it may spin very slowly)
I found that this method of tuning has improved handling out of sight. Particuarly under hard throttle and turning on slippery surfaces.
Thats it for me.
I'm leaving it up to TOXXIC to develop DRIFTO-TUNE ;)
James
21-01-2005, 10:33 AM
thats how you tune all diff's. usually. cept not by running the motor, usually by moving the spur by hand/thumb whilst holding rear wheels!
so it kicks arse now? :)
azzachaz
21-01-2005, 12:55 PM
Oh yeah, it is fast. Too fast to go full throttle inside without hitting something.
I have only installed the X-Speed motor, not the PRO. With the PRO motor and a FET upgrade (modification to the ESC) it would become even quicker.
Had a call from my wife telling me my Bling Bling parts have arrived. Pics soon.

I dont know why i am posting this in here, but i got a short vid of my iwaver and my trying to drift it (without much sucess). Its been ballraced and got a new diff, also had metal wheel nuts and resoldered some connections.
This was taken with alkaline about 10 mins into usage so they were alittle low on juice.
http://www.digitalbandit.info/iwaver.zip
Video size is about 1.8mb (1.7 ziped).
Soon im planing on getting a new motor, some nimh batts and new wheels. After that there is not much else to be done (excpet for front nuckles and turbo fet's and perhaps rear suspension).
These iWavers are great, considering a fully hopped up one will cost you maybe $250 (thats with almost everything). Some mini-z's cost that much stock eh.
So far aaron has been great with sending stuff and all, highly recomended.
Some stills.

This has been posted on another forum as well..but how well will these iwavers run on a home made indoor track which is 3.6 metre x 1.2 metre with a straight full length and then some windy S bends and some hairpins.
Do they have enough speed and steering control to finness through this size track or will it be too small / tight.
I have used this track with CharGs which would have a slower top speed but have no proportional steering/throttle - Its all or nothing with the CharGs
P.S. Nice little Video..good quality for the size. A few Thuds in the Vid as you smash into door frames etc. Seems pretty sturdy and that Vid gives a good indication of Speed - although the surface looks quiet slippery

lol Toxxic.
I noticed your wing is broken. Mine did the same, a bit of Tarzan's Grip and it hasn't come off since.
You need more room for drift, that way you can put the power down smootly and not worry about walls etc.
Some 50 Shore tyres (harder) might help too.
Those decals look sweet btw.
Squeezer: That size track would be fine for a stock iWaver. The proportional steering and throttle really lends itself to tight tracks. You would probably only get full throttle down the straight though

Yeah, when i get some new wheels and rechargables, ill make the table out abit so i can get some proper drift :)

INstallation was fairly straight forward and took me about 20 mins. Just a screw driver and two wires needed soldering. You could just twist and tape the wires if you didn't have an iron

OK, since upgrading the motor I have had trouble controlling the 01. The biggest problem was the rear wheels jumping while accelerating out of the corner.
This is what you buy to fix that...

it is a Roll Shock set, it dampens the rear motor pod and stiffens things up for better handling

pretty easy to install really. I went with the middle setting spring. I will play with Soft and Hard later on to see what difference they make.

installation complete. Also, you may have noticed I have upgraded my motor wires with bigger gauge wire. The stock wires kept snapping off the motor, and I am sure the motor is running better too (mmmm placebo %-6 )

You bet it does! I can gun it in a straight line no probs, and corner handling has really improved too.
Vid's on the way

They can get up to pretty huge speeds. 80km/h is obtainable with a few relatively cheap mods.
The problem is finding somewhere to run it at those speeds. If it hits a stone or twig at that speed it is all over!
I had all the mods I have done in stock so you can do it too, just PM me if you are interested.
Next I will be buying a Tamiya Speed Checker. It is like a mini speed Dyno for small scale cars.
have you found anywhere to race them yet?

The first pic shows the correct colour and this one shows them on the car. Because of the offset I have to use the GT-40 shell. The wheels dont fit the impreza arches.

Did a FET upgrade today. Completed what is called a 3x2 stack. A stack of 3 FETs in parallel on both the forward and reverse sections.
I used IRF7317 FETs which have a current handling of 5.3A each while maintaining a very low 'on' resistance.
Car is heaps faster now. I'm having heaps of fun running through the leaves in my backyard. Cant wait for my Li-Ion;s to arrive :D
