Hey all,
Anyone had any experiences with modding PS2s?
Its just a plain normal PS2, not a slimline one.

I've read up on the 2 main ways of doing it, either a swap/boot disk system or an internal modchip which requires some fine soildering.
Problem is its my housemates, & i dont think he'd be too happy with me if i fried it.

Anyone done this or know if the boot system is worthwhile?

Cheers

As far as the boot system goes Rohan , to my knowledge , it becomes a pain in the ass when you want to swap games .

The mod chip , well yes , definately fine soldering and even allot of wiring so if your not up with your electronics or soldering skills , definately pass doing it yourself and get someone else to do it .

Wouldn't own a playstation without one,Iv'e had several machines modded and so have half a dozen mates,no problems with any of them, the mod chip will also allow you to play NTSC games as well as the Australian PAL ones,go for some one who gaurantees thier work as even the experts will occasionally kill a system when fitting the chip but this is rare, most guys will repair the system at their expense if they do this.Once the chip has been installed they are very reliable, only other catch is if the system is less than a year old you will void the manufacturers warranty

Thanks heaps.
Yeah there seem to be a lot of guys here in sydney that do it, and also charging a heap to do it at the same time.
guaranteed ones seem ot be going for about $100 - 150 depending on the chip.
I'm not bad with the soildering iron, i've done about 4 iWaver FET and wiring mods, & of course plenty of normal RC soildering.
Anyone know how fine the work is?

Those boot disk systems go for $40
i immagine it would be a pain in the ass, but $40 is pretty cheap!

Anyone know how fine the work is?

About the same as your fet soldering. Surface pad soldering mainly, modchips come with good instructions these days :)

yea, but if you stuff it up - then you have to fix - or pay for it to be fixed..

If you get it done by a pro - and they manage to stuff it up, then they will pay to have it fixed...

So if u do it yourself your taking a bit of a risk :P

http://www.modchipstore.com/DMS4-EZI-Lite-Solderless-ModChip-Playstation-2-No-Solder-Solutio-16221.html

check out that site mate...lots of great stuff.

its a shame ive got the SLim Line cause i cant use those solderless chips. oh well, i think i will just buy the chip and take it to modtech and they can solder it for me.

also going to get a harddrive setup for it.

this is pretty much wot your looking at .

Find the red PCB and put wire links from corresponding letters .

Its definately a bitch of a job and to be honest with you , after costs of the chip , for only an extra few dollars , youve got someone doing it for you .

how much space do you recon the average *cough* "Backup" would take? many dual layer DVD games out there? or are they just mainly a couple of gig each?

ive got x box as well and lowest game ive had is only 800mg but most average the 2 - 3G . Just grab a 200Gig hdd , thats plenty , thats like 60 high quality games or 150 mixed . If you need more games than that then youve got a problem and its called obsession imho ... lol .

I have a Xbox too. I modchipped it so I could have a cheap media centre in the lounge room. Being able to play Xvid/Divx files with full AC3 in the comfort of the lounge room is a big plus.

HDD game loading is great - cd/dvd access times bite the big one!
