This was mentioned a while back in the JCart thread, so here it is.
A thread for your custom paintjobs, or ones you've found on the web and like, drawings of ones you'd like... anything like that!
I'll kick it off with my freshly finished nats body.

Well done to Insane, who's green 4wd body, and blue truck body posted above won concourse in their respective classes!
Not sure how it beat MY truck body, must have been an oversight on the judges behalf :P
j/k dude, well done.
JCART RACING
20-04-2006, 06:22 PM
Well KB it all comes down to the judges .
And in my opinion they have no idear what they are looking at .
At the Bunbury Cup i had around 10 of my paint jobs there and it came down to the Chrome mini in my thread and a Orange car with green flames and more bleeds in the paint than a Vampires Picnic and quest what bet me .
KingBob
20-04-2006, 06:50 PM
Yeah, it's a bit like that.
It seems the organisers aren't really interested in concourse though, it's generally someones wife/mother/daughter/all three who does the judging.
It should be looked at with a painters eye. Complexity of design, use of colour, technique, quality etc. That being said, if i'd been judging i wouldn't have picked my own truck body, i'm my own worst critic and would see every flaw in it!
I'm not sure which 2wd won it, but i will say that Insanes Truck body was very well done.
I think i've pinned how to win though... a body needs a checkered pattern to win! lol
In all honesty, i think it should be judged by all the drivers. For concourse each car is numbered, and each driver votes for the one they like as they walk by them. Results tallied, and presto, the peoples choice of what looks best.
hear hear!
judges of concourse body entries should have an eye for detail and design aesthetics, and knowledge of good painting techniques.
its a shame most of the time (well in my experience) concourse is taken as a token gesture...it should never appeal to a personal taste, but rather to the best effort / design / overall approach to the application of paint onto a clear body shell.
i like KB's idea of a vote...and perhaps a "score sheet" that deals with categories of what makes a winning design.
just my thoughts.
insane
20-04-2006, 11:02 PM
I would have to agree with you, KB, JCART and Shadow.
Im with JCART about bunbury i to was there and out of the 2 the mini stood out so I to dont know what they were thinking.
Judging needs to be thought about. Some people i've talked to have said that people who paint bodies for a living or on the side should be excluded from concourse. I would have to disagree!
I have stoped putting my name on most of my customers cars because of the backlash i have recieved because they think it is an unfair advantage. I paint cars because I enjoy it and if they win, BONUS. I have one concourse with some of my worst and most basic cars. Im stoked to win, but when you tell them a yellow car with a black and white stripe down the side won, you wonder what the person was thinking when they chose it. My misses still take the piss out of it and so does the guy who's car it is.
The guys/girls who go into concourse go in it to win, so as stated above it should be taken seriously.
KB the 4wd body is Chris Bozich and the truck body is George Separovich.
JCARTs mini is a stunner in the sun and on the track
KingBob
20-04-2006, 11:10 PM
I'm the same as you Insane. I enjoy painting bodies, and seeing several of ones own creations flying around a track is a thrill!
I know i'm not likely to win a race, but I can try my hardest to win concourse!
Some of us do take it seriously, and those of us who do all appreciate the work, time, effort etc that goes into a great paintjob like your truck.
ive said this b4 and ill say it again.
i honestly think there should be two categories for concourse: Best commercial / sponsored body painting and best personal effort.
policing it will be the biggest hurdle.. and thats why its so important for painters of bodyshells to make sure their name / credit is on the car. this is proper courtesy to the originator / designer fo the shell.
If I win concourse with a shell painted by somebody else, that painter deserves the trophy. not me.
if this is to be taken seriously (judging concourse criterias) where do we go from here?
insane
21-04-2006, 12:09 AM
Shadow, im going to pick up the concourse trophy for the 4wd buggy tomorrow. Chris is with you and if he wins concourse he hands the trophys over to the person who's painted the body.
KB i've won a B main, does that count, its the closest to a win that i'll get.
But it is true. It is good to see guys driving around with one of your paint jobs but the best thing is when you give them the shell and they see it for the first time. Their reaction says it all and the time you have put into it is worth it.

Boony only wants a boring paintjob on the BJ4 anyway!
running truck @ hardman is pointless since it is only a support class (no trophies, its just a race). if you have a 2wd and 4wd, run them both, its where the trophies and WAORMA points are at.

Just something for Shadow and anyone else using compressed air cans.
Don't buy from the LHS, it's about 3 times the price of the cans which are the exact same from super cheah auto.
I also found the cans got too cold sometimes, so keeping them in a glass of warm water was good.
KingBob
24-01-2007, 05:04 PM
Putting the can in warm water will also increase the pressure slightly. Can do it with Tamiya spray cans as well. Helps atomise the paint better too.

Bloody loving that body KB.
Is it a faskolor paint that red?
KingBob
24-01-2007, 11:10 PM
Nope, it's SpazStix Hard anodized Deep red, or candy red, one of the 2.
Seriously the photo doesn't do it justice, an awesome colour. i'm using it on my next trf501x body.
mIKe-
24-01-2007, 11:13 PM
Is it a water based paint aswell?
Can I use it with faskolor paints?
Also, I need to make my paint stronger. I don't know if I'm not backing it think enough ro what, but how can I make the paint less scratch proof?
Can I spray tamiya white from a can over the back of water based paints?
KingBob
25-01-2007, 12:03 AM
Spazstix is a laquer based paint, and can be backed with faskolor. PHC have some Spazstix colours, but, being an excellent paint, it's not cheap, about $16 for a 1oz bottle. Faskolor is $10 for a 2oz bottle.
You can back Faskolor with tamiya spray, just make sure it's dry first. It might be so fragile because you thinned it.
If you do use any Spazstix, then DON"T back with Tamiya spray. The thinners in the spray will destroy it.
You could always back the faskolor with Faskoat, this dries like a latex, designed to protect from nitro fuel but will add scratch resistance.
mIKe-
25-01-2007, 12:11 AM
Thanks once again KB, answered all my questions.
I really need to learn how to spray the faskolor without thinning it, might be my air brush I'm not sure, so many variables.

exactly what toady said.the paint job will only be for club meets and as long as it has a body in half decent order it aint gonna effect the outcome.

I painted up a HPI 69 charger body for a mates Savage, in good ole General Lee colours.
Will have to take some decent pics in sunlight to properly show off the chrome and metallic colours.

Prime it with any enamel primer like any automotive body, would also suggest perhaps a rust inhibitor undercoat. A lot of paints (especially metallics) have metal particles in them which can be affected by paint thinners and cause a rust/red tinge to any subsequent layer of paint.
Number of coats depends on the colour of paint and the colour of the primer. A dark primer with a light colour ontop will require more coats to build up the proper colour so the primer doesn't show through. The reverse is true if you use a light primer and a dark colour on top.
You need to then consider the mix of layers, whether you have a light colour over a dark colour or the other way around. Again you'll need to build up layers to get the correct effect. Having said that, some colours can change others in a good way. A silver backing for a metallic red can have a great effect, or even better for translucent colours. Then make sure you put a nice clear coat on top to protect it.
As for graphics and paint changes, if you put down masking tape in the shape you want, spray one colour, peel the tape, which will have masked off an area, then spray that bit. easy.
You may need to scuff up the surface of the body first to make a rough enough surface for the paint to adhere, bit of wet and dry sandpaper will do the job. Then make sure you wash the body with some good detergent or bleach to get rid of any mould release agent from when it was made.
