Looking for some opinions.
My Kyosho kept stalling so I took the clutch bell off and found that the clutch shoes had chunks of hard black stuff on them (possibly burnt clutch material) that was blocking the bell and keeping the clutch engaged.
I replaced the shoes with new parts and ran the truck. It was fine for 5mins but then started to stall.
SAME PROBLEM AGAIN, the clutch shoes are black again :(
The clutch bell looks in good condition.
Any ideas??

Now i'm not sure the settup of the clutch in these things and would have to have a look into it to possibly answer properly but i'm thinking the motor might be too strong for the clutch or if there is a spring on it to dissenguage it then the spring might not be strong enough... sorry i can't be any more help, do you have any pictures of the clutch??
the clutch is too tight or too loose. too tight and ripping the crap out of it the instant you give it full throttle, or too loose just causing heat build up which causes chunks to break away.
when you give it gas, how many feet does the car travel before the clutch has fully engaged (a guess is fine)?
Centrifugal clutches are very simple and can only be a few things.
Obviously, the shoes/pads aren't the problem so this only leaves the small spring that holds the pads together. Another problem could be balance. Is the shaft that the clutch slides on to OK or worn at all, or not tighted properly? Or is the bearings that the bell housing roll on worn? How olds the motor? Does it idle OK? Main bearing behind flywheel could be worn? It just sounds like the clutch isn't running/turning properly which is causing the shoes/pads to wear out quicker than they should and also providing to much resistence/drive and the motor hasn't got enough torque to power it.
Matt, in general most clutches aren't adjustable.

Not yet. I had some problems with my Thunder Tiger which I wanted to sort out first.
I will take it apart tonight and have a look.
I'll post pics to see if you guys can see anything obvious

It was pouring down last night and I didn't get home to 8 so I didn't get a chance to open her up last night.
I did take a few happy snaps of the problem area the other day though so here you are.

Crap picture quality...sorry. I'm not used to my new camera and havn't worked out the close-ups yet.
Here is a pic of the Sandmaster without it's tough Black Ute body.
I'll get pics of it in all it's glory ASAP. It reminds me of Marty's Black 4X4 from Back to the Future (well kind of) :)

To start with, you have to eliminate any possibilities that are causing the clutch problems.
Remove the bell, and sand it with some fine sandpaper, to get the surface nice and grippy.
Then, sand the clutch shoes as well.
This prepares all the surfaces to grip each other, and work in the best way they can.
Then you have to look at the springs and the bearings. If the bearings are worn, replace them.. if the springs are soft, replace them.
If its none of the above, then you have to look past the clutch and see what else might be causing your problem.
Have you ever thought of checking your fuel mixtures to see if its that which is causing your problem? It may be too rich and bogging down and dieing, or too lean and causing the same problem?
Is the spur gear getting stuck some how and making the engine die, caused by a problem with the one way bearing??

You've got some good troubleshooting ideas there BALISTIC, thanks.
I'll keep all of them in mind when I take it apart tonight. I'll take pics to if I can get my close-ups nice and sharp

I took the clutch bell off and checked out the condition of the bearings ect.
Everything looks in good order except the shoes which are rooted.

See the condition of the old clutch shoes compared to the new ones. The springs were of similar length but he old one was much stretchier

Anyone see the Back to the Future resemblance?
Can anyone see anything I have missed? I know that the photos aren't too great so I suppose not

I didn't finish replacing the clutch until 9 last night so I didn't get a chance to drive it. I ran it on the stand for a while and it seems to be engaging/disengaging well.
I might not get a chance to run it today either :(
I have to help my sister move house and it might rain later on.

You can make out the black buildup on the shoes a bit better than the other pic I posted. Sorry about the bad quality

Success!!!!
Took the truck out for a spin today and everything seems sweet. The clutch is engaging well and doing it's job. I think the problem was reusing the old clutch spring.
Also, the car was bogging down and dying for a while. Turns out the mixture setting was WAY too rich (mmm.. must keep son away from cars). I was sure I had it set at factory.
Thanks for all of you suggestions, I think you guessed the problems (running rich, old spring) so a pat on the back to all of you.
Here is a pic of the sabatour :D

Rather than start a new thread for the Sandmaster i've changed the title of the thread and removed the clutch problem reference.
As I said in another thread I found that the bearing grease had settled in the diff and is providing very little resistance.
Because I saved time on the diff I decided to do something totally aethetic to the truck.
I'll keep you guys guessing but i'll let you know it is totally rice and bling bling :)
Only cost me 50c though. I'll post pics tonight.
Kudos to anyone who can guess before then

haa!! headlights! nipples for a 4x4! a like it!!
and such an inexpensive thing to do.
i heard once of a mate a long long time ago cable tying a lit cigarette to the bumper of his buggy when he used it at night so he could see where the car was. the faster he drove, the more air got to the ciggy and it would light up.
bwhaahhah. crazy.
