Welcome to Team Adrenaline Brocky.
In my opinion, buy a relatively cheap and new buggy/truck/4wd so that you dont outlay a large amount of cash to begin with, and you can begin to enjoy racing for only a couple of hundred dollars.
It sounds like you want to get into off road, therefor I would recommend coming to a race meet at Bayswater on Friday night and/or Bibra Lake on Saturday night. Keep in mind that the wet season is fast approaching so race meets may not be as frequent as "every week" depending on weather.
The next step is to then visit a hobby shop and let the sales person behind the counter show you their wares. Perth Hobby Center are located on Murray St in the City and have a fantastic retail showroom. Ryper Hobbies are located on Coolibah St in Bibra Lake also have a fantastic display of products and with a track out the back you can go for a run within minutes of buying your first RC.
Exciting times ahead Brocky. Dont be afraid to ask for help and advice as you need it!!
Enjoy your stay at Team Adrenaline.
Matt.
