I have one that I built from scratch.
You need to start off with a TLT or a Clod depending how hardcore you would like to go.
Again depending how hard you would like to go. your looking at anywhere from 700 - 1500 slightly more for a clod based crawler.
For perth I would recommend a TLT based crawler as there isnt any terrain suited to a Clod that I have found.
Most parts will be sourced from the US so dont be suprised if it takes a couple of months to put it all together.
If you are looking for insperation check out www.rccrawler.com
I have also posted a thread in the Members ride section. With a parts list etc.
Also if you want more info my msn is in my user profile.

Right near your place in South Perth....there is a good spot.
Go to that hotel on South Tce Como, Pagoda or something like that? Well where the freeway pedestrian overpasses are near there, there are big rock piles on the river side of those overpasses. Lots and lots of limestone!!
Seems to be a great "urban" crawling spot by the looks of it, but I'm going to go and check it out for real next week.

do you know if there are going to any crawling comps in Perth?
Fozzy

If we get enough Interest... I am sure we could start a comp..
I am willing to organise it according to RCCrawler.com rules.
gonna need abit of interest to be worth it but. If only 5 or 6 people are going to turn up we might aswell just have a group crawl!

Maybe we should stick to rocks for now. Atleast till we work out any legal probs that may be there!!!

I cant imagine to many parents would let us do it. I got my clod confiscated years ago for running over my sister.
Hey Fozzy
Why the TLT or the Clod. Whats wrong with the TXT
Fozzy
06-06-2006, 07:33 PM
i forgot to add that in.. Was a quick post as I was heading out!
Fozzy
It just seems that the TXT is the forgotten one in the family.
Why did you chose the TLT
Fozzy
06-06-2006, 08:09 PM
Because I was new to the game and I didnt really know much about crawling. The TLT seemed to be the best combo for a newb that needed lots of information and support to build a good unit.
The other reason for the choice was the size. I didnt want a massive huge crawler. I wanted something to be in the 2.2 class and reasonably in scale.
So that was that and that was what helped me reach the final decision. I am that happy with it I am building another TLT based scale crawler but more details of that another Time!

TLT and Clod based crawlers have the most aftermarket support.
Nothing wrong with a TXT, or even a Maxx based independently suspended crawler, if you wanna be different....but for a beginner, cant go past TLT or Clod for parts and information availability!
what sort of parts does a crawler go thru ? just gearbox stuff ?

Tyres, but not that often.
Mainly driveshafts, diff gears, transmission gears, and occasionally spurs and pinions...big sticky tyres on one end and monster torque 55T lathe motors on the other, tend to destroy much in between.
This same torque issue strips the hexes out of plastic wheels, and you'll also find that trying to turn big tyres on the rocks with a big servo will crack axle housings and smash steering knuckles on TLTs, especially with wheel wideners.
Scott and I both have Topcad ally knuckles and ti kingpins to prevent this from happening, and Scott went one step further with the billet rims to prevent hex problems.

Bashing and crawling are two different things though ;)
You can make your truck as tough as possible, but if your not careful it'll destroy the drivetrain pretty quick.
The worst is when a crawler gets twisted up in a rock hole, and you try and drive it out...if its really stuck, the motor will keep spinning even though the tyres are jammed, and something will go bang, more than likely inside the tranny.

Scott,
If you end up stripping out the trans again after you've replaced the bits, maybe its worthwhile looking at getting this??

Thats not the one I have stripped Joe.
Its the gear on the top shaft. I have a metal replacement. With solid metal pins.
Should be interesting to see how it all goes together.

Do you have a link to that part on Tower Hobbies that I can look at??
