View Full Version : Project PUNISHER

I never thought I'd see the day where I decide to fiddle with something in r/c that isnt on wheels.

It's so good, I just had to create another forum here on TA so this would work. Welcome to R/C Boating!

Here goes... Project PUNISHER.

Follow me as I build, from scratch a gas powered power boat. We're not talking some kinda weenie girly pansy shit. We're talking mens stuff. No wuss motors here, no weak toys, all power, all potential.

My bro comes to me not long ago, and says "hey man, lets build some r/c boats".. at first I was thinking.. yeah dude, whatever, lets do it. Thinking nothing more of it.... then he goes to tell me how he found some old r/c boat moulds at his work (fiberglassing shop)... ITS ON.

2 days later he's already whipped a product out of said mould, and thus Project PUNISHER is born.

Stay tuned as I go step by step in an insane alternate reality of R/C on water!

Some initial pictures of our PUNISHER Deep-V hull (c)

intial specification thoughts:

50in length
14.5in beam

build from a couple of layers of chop strand matt (fiberglass) with a lovely white gelcoat. (to be painted yet)

But James, whats going to power this bad boy? let me guess, a nitro motor?

NO. but your on the right track. No nitro motor has the balls to make this baby burn. We're gonna have to go 2-stroke goodness. thats right girls and boys, dismantle your whipper snipper, coz the motor is going in. On a serious not, we wont be using a whipper snipper motor, but we will be using a propper marine 2-stroke motor (around 4 horsepower), giddyap rudolf!

Estimated build cost is around $1k, and this is DIY kids, not RTR.

These things do anywhere beween 60 to 100+ kph on water, and handle damn well.

But James, where on earth are you going to use this thing?

Unleash the fury my friend. I live just south of freo (near bibra lake) where we have nothing less than at least 5 good size, perfectly still lakes to perform our chaotic acts.

James, can these things be raced? you better believe it!

Do you need any special radio gear? no, your old school 2chan will do fine!

What about the cost of fuel? dirt cheap, from the servo with a bit of oil mixed in!

Can you make me one? Pending the success of failure of this project, we (my bro and I) may build to order, or even provide RTR kits (with or without radio gear) with a few motor options (eg water cooled, air cooled, etc)

So keep your eyes peeled as we embark on our Project PUNISHER adventure!

will be watching this thread mate,

I'm building a 48 inch myself atm, but doing the hull from scratch.
Have you found any shops good for parts? Perth RC has a very VERY limited stock of small and crappy stuff, and I need like 120mm+ sized rudders and 50+ props.

If anyone is keen to see what I'm trying to achieve:

boat simular to the "Enforcer Gator", there is some small build pages, pics, and even some video's from a foxtel show on DIY Network, I think it's called "remote controlled" (the show that is)... the vid clips are pretty good, he builds one of these kits, then the last clip he goes out with his mates and 'races' it... very cool: URL:

http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/rc_other/article/0,2033,DIY_14223_2273866,00.html

on that page is the URL to the manufacture of the boats, and they also supply the motors, rudder systems, driveline, etc.

I dont know much about these things, so it will be a learning curve! a fun one too hehe. Not sure of any shops in perth that stock this kinda gear. If I can find any, I'll be buying from these guys:

James once it's built take it for a 5am run across the still Bibra Lake, I'll come and look as I'm only walking distance from the actualy lake.

Hahaha have the keys in your ignition ready to do a runner when the cranky calm lady comes along sayings your going to kill her precious turtles!

Okay, it's a Zenoah EZ25, it's worth about $450 USD a little more cash can get you one that cranks 5HP... wild. water cooled, literally the best...

I'm considering getting them in, pending the success of the prototypes we're building at the moment.

My brother and I have decided to alter our first hull (in initial pics above) for a more modern look. This hull we have is about 10yrs old. We're working on new products as I type.

We MIGHT be willing to make these to order. eg you want one, you pay deposit, we make you one. We might even do full packages with everything in it, ready to add radio gear. It just makes things easier.

Package would be as follows, or at least, this is what my first runner will have. I've gone for everything top-shelf here. you can save a few hundred bucks by using a cheaper air-cooled motor, and cheaper (single) rudder system: (you would use single rudder system on a boat under 46")

EZ25 Zenoah 260 w/clutch
SPD III w/dual rudders
Pro-Wet Tuned system
Radio Box
Gas Tank
Iso-Pad mount (this is for mounting the shaft easily)
3/8" shaft tube w/Teflon liner (Pre-bent)
Drive cable (factory assembled)
Water-pump
Trim tabs
Balanced 75mm prop
Antenna w/ transom mount
Water pick-up
steering linkage
Carb linkage
Boot water seals (2)
Fuel filter
Fuel line
2- 1/2" X 20" pre-cut stringers (the motor and radio gear mounts on these)
Cloth tape for stringers
Nuts, screw and bolt package

Cost of this package is roughly $1000 (and thats very rough, from basic calculations) And of course does not include the boat (hull) or radio gear

Should have this running, have build pics, and vids sometime early Jan if things go to plan :)

I'll get some pics of our moulds and revised designs too :)

A complete package ready for radio gear I've estimated at about $1,500 or maybe $1,700 fully assembled. dont really know, dont really have intentions to build/sell these as yet, all depends how our first few go.. should go well however, as the design and gear is all race-proven :)

mate , let me tell you , if you can keep it under the $1500 mark , thats a ****ing GEM with that engine .

Guys , you may see cheaper ones on ebay for like $700 but their just cruisers , have water leakage problems in the cooling system , motors are cheap and nasties with no low end grunt ( or high RPM for that matter ) , cheap fiberglassing with inner peeling and even worse engine mounts cracking off and the story goes on .

For James price , its double but sounds perfect as these look like they will be Australian made , support here through the forum , atleast twice as quick .

Good luck to you mate and i reckon i will consider 1 early next year pending your hull shape but yeah , that hull youve got pictured looks ok is a bit outdated now .

James

yep, we're going to be doing newer hulls :)

Hey James, looks Fab
Corey has built 3 or 4 small boats/cats at home from Balsa wood and adds his RC hear into it then flies around on our pool...LOL...BUT he's always looking to upgrade. I DARE show him this post but Im sure he will be interested. Just passed his divers course so I guess he could rescue his if it sank, and he also gets his skippers ticket soon so ge could drive it also ;)
Look forward to watching your updates.
