View Full Version : Entry level glider recommendations
Stone is convincing me to get a glider to go flying with him. So, being a complete sucker for peer pressure I'm thinking of doing it.
Is a glider a glider? What difference will a 1.5 meter and a 2 meter wing span have?
Are RTF's a-ok or should I buy a kit and make it myself?
Matt.

Get an almost ready too fly,(little bit of building, normaly cheep too) and get in the air bro.
as far as 1.5 - 2 meter wing span diffrences.Smaller is better for hand launching, easer to cart around in the car if the wing is one piece,But the smaller you go,the harder they are to fly BUT this is not a hard and fast rule, just somthin Ive observed over the years.
Glad your keen mate, look forward to flying with ya.

Matt , for a begginer id go a 2 meter . The difference is firstly the weight , being a begginer you want something a bit heavier so the wind doesnt blow it around plus with the extra wing area , its more forgiving in terms of being stable .
im sure stone will back me up here in saying that a 1.5 meter would be quicker and for a slightly more advanced flyer although in saying that most of them these days are 1.5 meter wingspans .
Go an ARF DEFINATELY till you know how to fly . Once you figure out how to fly , you will know how to build it , that may sound stupid but theres allot of balance points to work on once youve built it and once you know how to fly , you can work out how you want your plane balanced . Ive had many planes that ive offset the reccomended centre of gravity .

So Matt, have you found a glider yet or are you still chasing skirts around?
Moungrel got Kia's broken one so the good one hasnt been sold as far as I know. And for the price he was after I think you should just do it......Bit more Peer pressure LoL.
I tell ya, broken wings arnt much fun to fix.But should have mongrel's fixt and in the air this weekend.
I spent the best part of half an hour figuring out the best way too fix it,in the end I just epoxyed the half's back together.
Next is replacing a couple of the ribs, then I think I will fit CF rods along the leading and trailing edges at the break,as well as the main spar.
Then cover it with solerfilm, balence the wing, (the unbroken side is still wieghs more strangley enough)
Then trim it out for a novice pilot, she should fly well.
I havent got one yet, its still high on the cards, just got to find the time to visit hobby shops and see whats out there rah rah rah

Despite the elevator havin a "tape" hinge,I still get flutter off the bungee, and I only streech it too 25 paces as I says no more then thirty,But I recon Im getting It to max hight with a tad of elevator at about 50m onwards then ping it off with a loop.
We'll have to have a last one down buys the Tinnys, some time.
