View Full Version : Another newbie question re: servos and setting them up
I've got a HB D4 kit that I've just put together with a Novak speed controller and futaba radio. I follow the instructions for the speed controller where you set it up for max throttle and brake, etc. and all is fine...
However when I turn it all on, the steering servo goes to a hard left turn and no matter what I do with the radio settings for "initial position" or steering trim it won't straighten up. If I turn the wheel on the radio it steers right and only a fraction left (cos its already hard left) so this tells me the connectors aren't in wrong.
I also notice that after playing around with the trims for a couple of minutes that the servo got bloody hot. It makes a noise louder than the fan on the speed controller as well.
I'm obvioulsy doing something very very stupid or the servo is stuffed or something.
Anyway - just thought I'd post it incase someone knows what I'm doing wrong.

FIrst check if you have all your trims , subtrims sentered on the transmitter if not I reckon the timing on your servo has gone out of whack .
They have a little potentiometer in them ( micro stereo volume control thing ) and it tells the microprocessor in the servo what position neutral should be , its either faulty or a i said , its not in the right position so the servo is going past the end point to compensate neutral .

It sounds like the servo is straining against something to rotate. Is it hooked up to the cars steering assembly?
If so, undo it so the servo spline is free to rotate. Turn it all on and centre all trims on the radio.
Does it then rotate equally? if it does, reconnect the steering assembly then trim it. Problem solved.
If you fitted the servo straight out of the box, it may not have been centered, and it's trying to center but is being prevented by the steering assembly, hence the noise, jitter and heat, so try that and see how it goes.
If not, then yeah, it's faulty.

heh RB, well he doesn't specifically say it's connected, but thats what it sounds like. I could be wrong, but it's a possible solution for him to try.

Thats what I was going to say, allways test the servo is centered FIRST. That is plug it in and turn it on befor install in buggy,or at least befor the servo horn is attatched.
Thanks for the replies. Yes the servo is already mounted in the car, but I'll disconnect it and make sure it turns okay and I can centre it while disconnected from the steering linkage. Thx. :)
Hi Guys,
Well I disconnected the servo from the steering linkage and there's no difference. it often makes a loud vibrating noise and afer playing around with the trims for only about 1 minute gets almost too hot to touch. No matter what I do with the trims I can't centre it, in fact I can only make it move very slightly with the trims at 100% right, etc. So I think the servo hjas shit itself. Thx for the help.

Ahh, well yes it does sound as though it's screwed. If it's brand new, take it back to where you purchased it.

lol , nah , just bored shitless !silly
Yeah I'll bring it down - thx.
Found out the problem - thx to Dave at Ryper. It was an analog servo and my radio was in a digital mode (HRS by default). Tried putting the radioo on PPM mode and still didn't work.
So either sending a digital signal to an analog servo totally stuffed it - or it was a dud servo to begin with. !eek
