Ok , so heres the deal i know there are better places to ask but thought id start here anyway , i want to start slowly converting to solar power firstly on my power packs ( phones chargers etc ) and to run my Plasma , recorder , fxtel box etc so heres a few qs .
12 to 240V converters , seems they are availably to reproduce 3000W for about $400 which is excellent . A decent solar panel and regulator about $500 and finally a few car batteries for the cycle $300 .
Would i be right in saying that this is all i need to start running a stand alone power source to run a 1000W load for a few hours a day .

RB I think you need to talk to a mate of mine.He has done this on his farm and is going to do it at his new house.

Make sure your inverter is a Pure Sine Wave model, expensive items such as hi-fi gear do not like the cheaper modulated sine wave types.
I'll have a look for the link, shows you exactly what they do under load, and its scary.
Also, Try converting any night time lights to LED variants and run them off your 12v system.
I have plans for a 240v/24v system in my house, 24v for bed side LED lamps, and lounge room LED lighting.

Ive seen some of those LED downlights at Jaycat ... Bloody bright they are but price .... damn their VERY espensive over the $35 mark each .
I dont know if anyone is also aware of this but LCD / DLP projectors are now going to LEDs instead of the Expensive globes . This is now making the projectors smaller , quieter and more efficient due to not having to leave half the projector for cooling . Also that thing of every 2000 hours having to change the globe ... gone

I use to design and sell solar panel systems for about 6years, for $500 for a panel and regulator i think you musta been looking in JAYCAR at the BP 60W due to the price.
A single 60W panel
Usable sun hours is avg around 6
Winter only gets about 4 believe it or not.
So 6hrs x 60W = 360Watt's per day produced
You really need to start looking at the items you wanna run and add the wattages together and then figure out what panel(s) are required. I put a 2.2kw per hour solar grid feed solar system on my parents house to keep up with there equipment requirements.
Ive got a small setup running my beer fridge and its 2x64w with a $300 solar regulator that logs with loads and inputs , also has a low voltage cut off.
