Guys , ive been looking for some portable wireless internet plan for a few weeks now with no success .

Closest i came to a good deal was 3mobile with their 1gig USB dongle for $15 a month which seemed not bad as i was going to buy an EEEPC and connect it to that but was a big outlay plus due to 3mobiles false advertising ( it actually worked out to $20+ a month for 24 months after dongle rental fee plus an dextra $5 a monrh coz i didnt have my mobile with them ) i decided against it .

Anyway , i came accross the " Pocketsurfer 2 " at Dick Smith .

This is the deal , you go to Dick Smith , pay $299 for this mobile widescreen fliptop PDA type device ( was $399 ) get it home , charge it for 4 hours , turn it on , enter your email address , your sex , date of birth push send and thats it , your device is registered for 1 year with free internet for a year on the basis of 20 hours per month unlimited download .

There are NO pop ups , NO adds flashing i the background and it just works .

It apparently runs through Vodafones GPRS phone network so its a case of openig it up , turning it on and if your anywhere where there is mobile phone coverage ( which is anywhere ) , your logged in and you can start surfing .

Ive used my mobile phone for surfing the net both windows CE plus the internet on my Nokia and they have been pretty minimal and basic in what you see on webpages as they compress it massivley for mobile internet but this device gives you the full screen identical to how you see it on your PC , no need to scroll left or right as you can just make it fit page or you do have the option to zoom in if you want .

Speed is amazing , its obviously not as quick as cable but lets just say its about 80% the speed of ADSL as we tried many pages today at a mates place for speed comparison ( i have put a link below to speed tests ) .

So guys , this is it , $299 , for the mobile device gives you free 20 hours a month unlimited download so its perfect for the glovebox surfer where your out on the road every day and just want to have a bid on ebay , check your emails , google info while your on the run , go to whitepages online to get phone numbers and it goes on .

Other price plans :

50 hours unlimited DL = $10 per month no contract
Unlimited time , unlimited DL = $19 per month
After your 1 year free it costs $50 a year for the 20 hours per month again .

1 drawback about the unit is the LCD is not as clear as a high end mobile phone / pda plus it will do EVERY POSSIBLE WEBSITE but not play video but who cares , i only got this for last minute bidding on ebay during the day when im on a job plus to check my emails , plus the whitepages.com.au as i spend a fortune on that bloody 1223 find a number thing every week as they charge like a wounded bull the second you dial the number .

Any one want any more info please ask here and ill try to answer it but i bloody swear by these things .

now this next part i havnt configured yet so not cant confirm but there are 3 boxes on the top of the device , 1 is to tell you your online , 1 is to tell you that you have a buddy in the area with another unit trying to contact you and the other is to tell you that you have mail ( being that it runs on GPRS it constantly is actually working in the background but not classed as your online surfing so doesnt bight into your 20 hours per month )

no idea but i have downloaded 10 meg pdfs no prob but as such i dont know .

If anyone does get it though i wouldnt consider the device a mini laptop or PDA , its pretty much just a screen with a keyboard to get the net on your screen , nothing else and apart from the cheap mobile phone looking LCD screen , it does the internet part absolutely perfectly for a mobile device .

I was onto tech support today to upgrade me to the 50 hours per month and asked them about it and they said that when you type in a website , they download the full website on their end and convert it to their own compressed format and send that to your screen hence how come its so quick for a GPRS device .
