Are you going to vote Dan?
I think the question should be, Whos not going to be running them?

Probably anyone in 4wd, since most of the current 4wd's use saddle packs.

Ive got a trakpower hardcase saddle-pack lipo but its only 3200 which might not be enuff for the mod guys.
Im allready loaded up with lipo's and have been using them at club racing, cant wait to off load my nimh's that ive been keeping alive for up coming events.

The saddlepack LiPo's i've seen have all been too thick to fit. Whats the size of the pack?

Been runnin Lipo since I started on road again, it's just a lot easier, and these hard cased lipo packs now are pretty tough, even the one I managed to blow (reverse polarity) gave out a puff of smoke then nothing, dead as a nail, no heat no fire etc.
do Lipo's require discharging, if they do how is it done?...can u use a normal discharger or is there a certain way of doin it?

I only discharge it once in a blue moon just so i can see what they take on a charge .
I balance them religiously though and i think its because of this that all 8 of my Premium Power 4700 lipos charge to min of 4800 and up to 5100 and i use these in my brushless boats and brushless surfboards to the death

I always do a balance charge on them, I figure it can't hurt and with my charger it's just a case of plugging in the 2mm plug to the pack. Easy as!

The only discharging they require is the discharging you do when you run them. This is the whole idea for having a balancer when you charge them.

They don't need cycling, but apparently it's best to leave them at 50 or 60% capacity when stored for long periods of time. So since I use ~1800 - 2000 mah per race out of a 4900 mah pack, I just don't charge them after racing until the next time I need to use them.

do you NEED a balancer when charging? and does anyone know what I need to make my GT7 run lipos?

Well i don't know with the speedy you have but most of the brushless lipo compatibles have a low voltage cut out so when the lipo reaches a certain voltage the car stops. So i would say this, as long as your speediy is capable of handling 8.4v - lipo voltage when fully charged - and some way of shutting down your electronics when the lipo voltage drops below 7.2 volts it should work. Making something that goes between the reciever and the speedy that sensess the voltage level and shuts it down when the voltage becomes too low would not be hard.
NOVAK make a module called smart stop that can protect your lipos .. Has throttle interuption and blue LED that lights up .. Run one in my Tamiya Lunchbox with a Trakpower lipo .. Cost me like 30 bucks from the US before the dollar dropped.

No you dont NEED one you can charge them without a balancer and i find they charge a little quicker .. but its better to have one to properly maintain them.

True but EVERY SINGLE LIPO AND I MEAN EVERY SINGLE LIPO i owned before balancers balooned within 5 months , after the balancers were released ive had success with EVERY SINGLE LIPO so id only go charging them without a balancer on the very odd occasion .

My experience is that good quality cells don't have as much variation in charge between cells in a pack so aren't as critical to balance every time. (I've got Orion Platinums that are three seasons old and have only been balanced this season and still going strong)
Balancing while charging takes longer (some balancers recommend 0.2C charge rates) so you're unlikely to do it on race day. It makes sense to balance your packs as much as possible but I wouldn't panic if it's not done every time. Every 3rd charge is OK by me. They certainly don't need babying like NiMH's do! And you can charge 'em up the night before and they're ready for racing the next day. What are some going to do with all the spare time?
I have read that Lipos will last longer/better if not full discharged as much - that is, better to keep topping them up rather than leaving a pack in till the lipo saver circuitry on your ESC cuts in.
One of my trakpower saddle sets ballooned the other day .. not heaps but enough to think i had fried it .. and i couldnt get it to charge through the balancer .. left it for a while and it went back to normal size put it on charge without the balancer and it charged fine.
