Hey guys , im sort of thinking of getting into go karting but dont know anything about them .
Ive got about $1500 to play with ( more than happy with second hand ) i am not after total race spec as im only doing it for a basher run to take for a run during the week . I want to start with a very cheap 1 and see how i go and if i like it and actually use it , im happy to spend around $10,000 mid next year on a FULL ON pro 1.
What do i need to look for , wot are half decent motors , are there any things the kart need to have ( roadworthy ??? ) to be able to go on a track .
Ive seen these but just looking at the motor it looks like a terrible mix and match botch job

That kart is a ching chong kart, not worth shit! There is no way that would RRP for 5k! Plus the engine is just a lawn mower engine, this is something they'd use at hire karts.
I'm not sure what classes are over east, but over in WA that kart wouldn't be able to run on the track at all.. maybe in practice or on a private track but there is no class for it.
Everything is regulated to keep racing fair and cheap.
The J's are the slowest with a 100cc yamaha J engine @ 10HP.
Then you go up to the clubby's, Yamaha S @ 15hp and then the rotax at 125cc with 28hp. There is some new rule they brought in with the 125's this year where you need to run a 125 with a restrictor for a year or so before you can move up to the next league. But im not 100% sure on that, best to contact your local club.
I bought a rotax 2 years ago and fark damn are they fun to drive :) When/If I get back into it I think i'd go down to the Clubman's as im not quite fit enough to run the rotax all day.
Give my misses a call, she runs a gokart shop over here in wa and they might have something cheap to get your started in J's.

HAHA , no brushless , no rc but in saying this , i would like to incorporate a spektrum telemetry to it on the wheel , get speed , rpm , temp , lap times baterry voltage for the kart stereo ... ok was joking bout the kart stereo ... lol .

Took it for a thrashing today with a few of us and got it to a top speed radar gunned at 98kph and had more legs but i ran out of road... this things insane and i can see where the money has gone but 1 thing i didnt expect and have now realised is that i am going to need a new set of tyres every day i take it out :(
This is going to be an expensive hobby and i hope it turns into a shelf queen soon ... lol

Hey Adam, with Data Loggers and stuff on a Go Kart, buy somethign good, and somethign thats made for a Go Kart, they have better functions in them, things like tuning lights and stuff, tell you when your Rich or Lean in your setting, once you have clipped a few piston rings you'll wish you had it.
My Quarter Midget runs a PRD 100 and i bought one off ebay, they aint cheap but they are cheaper than rebuilding motors.
Just look up "tuning lights", it's about $750 for a full pro deal, or just the tuning lights and sensor is about $270.

Yeah thats identical too mine, they are heaps helpful.......haven't had many issues since using it......get a Rev Counter next....only cause it's still funny too see how fast you go from 750rpm too 13,000 rpm :D

Yeah i went and picked up this 1 today in my lunch break .
Looks bulky with all the crap either side but the center part just clips out and you lose all the bulk .
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=270305753518 (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=270305753518)
Does bar graph to 16,000rpm and does reading to 20000rpm ( clip a sensor to the spark plug lead without having to splice in ) on the very bottom line along with speed on the main line .
Not that its a biggy but i also got the 100ohm fuel float for it so ill mount that into the tank to give me fuel levels as well ( they were only $40 so thought why not get the whole set ) . i guess it will now allow me to spray the tank but ill still leave a 1cm non sprayed slice up the middle to guage it manually .
Ill post some pix tomorrow once i install it as im going to the garage now to start
