Hey guys,
How hard do you guys think it would be to contsruct a custom chassis?
Right now I dont have any tools, but I plan to build one with a cheap drill press and a hack saw (and possibly a dremel).
My custom kyosho spider EP looks quite simple and I think I could make something better (both cleaner, smaller and lighter).
Basically all I need to do is make 2 "decks".
I want to work with some sort of sheet aluminium - where can I obtain some and how much should I expect to pay.
Am I out of my league, or is it obtainable?

The US guys seem to do it at the drop of a hat, or so it seems....
I guess you need a good drawing first, then a nice piece of carbon fibre, a drill press, and one of those sawa that you can push the carbon through/around to cut it.....??

Sounds like fun......Just try building one and see how you go......you should be able to get sheet aluminium from any good hardware store or at least they could order some in.......im thinking sheet alloy might not be rigid enough though, you might have to brace it somehow or get some thats 2 or 3mm thick....
If you had a band saw, it would be so easy. I'd give it a go with minimal tools (ie. hacksaw and dremel) if I could find some metal.

Hmmm id be concerned about the aluminium warping and it would be difficult to flatten back out
Boat builder aye? My mate's a yacht builder. :(

i say go for it. it wouldnt be hard. definately need a drill press, probably a small one with a small chuck. get a cheapy from bunnings, they are so cheap now! a ryobi 5speed or something. I gotta get one for myself too :)
fun project!

How cheap are the cheapy's? I probably want to spend about $50 on one, but that's probably too cheap.
I can probably nick some sheet metal from school, there is a massive shed full of different types of metal - and I have access to it!

I think there is one of those at my grandpa's house. I might have to grab one as we have a awesome hand drill.
I will also need some sort of a vice. And I definatly want to use a dremel.

I just bought a dremel today! Bloody 150bux for a cordless.

tell us how the cordless goes, i've heard they aren't as powerful as the corded ones

That's what I heard, but it does 35000RPM. The corded ones do up to 37000, so it's not far off. And it's not like I'm gonna be doing any hardcore work with it....in fact, I don't even know what to use it for at the moment.

I have a mate who built this machine from the ground up it is called arc it up,as he can engage the front brakes & let the rears smoke up.Not only is the chassis custom made as is the exhast.this thing is loud & totally awsome

No probs u could go to a local metal manufacturer get the flat 3mm ali sheet and start marking & cutting ,if u know the diamentions the metal supplier will cut it out for u ,for a few extra bucks .If u r going to mill carbon fibre make sure u r wearing long sleeves & jeans ,this stuff iches like crazy.

3mm alu. is probably to thick, is it available in 1mm or 1.5mm thicknesses?
I probably wouldnt use carbon fibre as it seems like it is an absolute pain to work with.

1mm is going to b way to thin u racin, on road /off road ,mod or stock ??

its a on road car, its pretty stock - but its also pretty fast stock.
I have a 1mm thick strip of brass here, and it is pretty rigid.

1mm?? Over the length of a 1/10 scale chassis, that's never gonna cut it. I would agree that 3mm is too thick, that's more for offroad. I think my old Nitro MT had a 3mm thick chassis. Although, I also think my V1R onroad had a 3mm one too, but that was nitro.
I reckon, 2-2.5mm would be safe.....not that I've ever made one before :P

Dude so the chassis your building is for an electric on roader ?!

Yep.
Looks like the poject wont continue since it seems kind of pointless and I have so many other projects which need completing.
I got some 1.5mm plastic sheet the other day so I might use that to make a chassis for the NMT. I glue a few layers together to make it thicker. The one problem for this chassis being the kick-up. I can't figure out how to add kick up to it. Anyone got any suggestions?

Try some heat ,grab your girls hair dryer

You could try lightly cutting it like when you cut polycarb bodies? Cut it, bend it (don't snap it off), hold it at the desired angle and glue it in place. It'd probably break off eventually, but you are making a PLASTIC chassis...?!
This thread just gets weirder
I figure the stuff's like lexan so I thought why not. I was originally going to use lexan but haven't gotten around to looking for some. I'm expecting it to break so it doesn't matter anyway, just some fun.
