So Stretch myself and Val met at the track this arvo to have a look at designing an onroad layout.
We came up with this rough design. It's 30.5m x 31.5m.
Comments? Suggestions?

So the bottom edge is the steps?

that would be real hard to layout everytime we have a race meeting,
remember that nobody will help you !!

This was my thinking,
base on the fact it would be quite easy to layout,
and the back straight is at the back !!
The centre of the track will be neglected Marshall wise. Too hard to rush into the centre and out again when there is a crash. Too many other "lanes" to watch for with other cars on the track.
Even with a marshall in the centre, he could have an overly busy time.
Maybe a bit too complex on the track layout, if simplied it would be a good track!
Matt.

Hey KB,
Sweet work with the overlay!!! Gives us a good impression on how it looks.

only negative i can see is the straights should run across the courts rather than towards and away from you.
switch the whole thing 90 degrees imo.

Hi KB,
Not sure if you have seen the TrackMaker program (http://www.zanthrax.nl/index.php?id=20) but that may help you make a number of different track layouts quite quickly.
Anyway back to your track, there are a couple of points that I would suggest:
- Pit lane (just for getting cars on and off the track safely, and for stop-go penalties for state titles etc (you may as well get the track to AARCMCC events now). Probably could go right at the bottom of the track where the drivers rostrum will be.
- I'm not a bit fan of hairpins at the end of main straights as you always get someone who tries to break too late and t-bones someone else in the middle of the hairpin.
- As Matt said marshalling may be a problem in the middle sections of the track. Maybe try and get a 'mashall's corridor' somewhere that the marshalls can run down without getting in the way of other cars.
- Maybe some corners which aren't constant radius, just for something different.
Some of these suggestions may not be realistic, especially if the track is a temporary track. If the track will be laid out each race meet, make it as simple as possible because as Revsinc said, the main guys running the track will be doing the majority of the work.
It will be good to see another club start up, eventually we make even be able to get a proper interclub competition started.

haha, it took me so long to think about my last post that you had already come up with another plan incorporating a lot of what I posted.

Heh, took me about 10 mins to design that.
Though a pitlane isnt shown specifically, its intended to be between the 2 light poles in the foreground, regardless of track layout.

This I like! Although I'd probably smooth some of the corners a tad (if that makes sense)
Nice work anyway KB!

KB, where are you thinking of putting the start/finish line. As you may need the run the transponder loop a reasonable distance to the computer, and assuming you can't cut it into the track, it may become a trip hazard.

We discussed the track setup for a meet issue when the committee was formed, and a roster system was decided. Members will be rostered on to help with the setup and packup. If it's your week, it's your week.

Got an old laptop up and running today, so we've got something to use. No USB, but it'll work. Plus it won't matter too much if it gets banged up

I know PRECC have tried this (as well as numerous other ideas) over the year, and found that some people just didn't turn up on their rostered days.

I was toying around with this design for a single netball court size, bearing in mind a couple of factors such as;
1. At first Kwinana is going to be a temporary track requiring setup and dismantling every time, therefore simplified smaller design requiring a lot less in the way of materials. (coz I is lazy)
2. Some areas for the marshalls to stand.
The square grids are approximately 3mtrs x 3mtrs. (30 x 15 mtr court)
Cheers Val

Kwinana will be holding its first un official race meet on the third of may. This will allow people to come down and help with track prep to help iron out any bugs. We are still sourcing material to help build the track so if anyone can help with this it would be much appreciated.
The format for the day will be
1) track design and construction
2) Testing transponder system
3) anything else required
4) racing tests
We will start at 11am in the morning and hopefully finish at 5pm or sooner. It depends how many numbers we get. Oh by the way membership forms will be available on the day if you would like to join.
Any questions

Is there a track design we can agree on for the following saturday, and mark parts of it in maybe four colours so i can get some marking material. I like vals idea. Still think the track could be bigger, one and a half netball courts. Can you do a design for that.

How about something like this, every square is 3m by 3m.
Also a neat little program for doing this can be found here.

Your original design was almost symmetrical, easy to lay out.

26-04-2009, 09:49 PM
This is version 4. Should be easier to layout than the last one. I've stuck in a pit lane down the bottom. Should be able to get some speed up in the front and back straights. Any feedback on this one guys?

Some good ideas there val but i think what we need to consider is limited material to build the track. I think we need to make it simple as possible until the club becomes more financial and invest in more material. Just remember we need to be able to lay the track as simple and quickly as possible. I was down bunnings yesterday buying the pipe for the transponder loop, for 3 meters of pipe it was 6 dollars. We have 100 meters of fire hose, and hopefully we get some donations of other material on the day. I will buy from my own back pocket anything else we need from bunnings like 100 meters of pipe and the club can pay me back when we have the money.
Cheers, Craig

Is anyone available to pick up the transponders from Rypers on saturday?
I can source a laptop, but i think someone else said they already had one?

Here's a shot of the track that was put together for last Sundays meeting. It worked well with the use of the polypipe, hose and tyres. But I can't wait till its re-surfaced and we can put down some paint to make it permanent! Size wise it was good for 19 laps for stock touring cars over a 5 minute race.

I think there is racing on this Sunday at Kwinana, weather permitting. I looks like a pretty poor forecast so far, but it will pay to keep an eye on the forum that morning and Stretch will make that call I guess like the Sunday just gone. I'm not going to be there due to other commitments and the fact that my spare parts won't be here by then either :(
