my young fella wants a rock crawler... whats a good one that is durable but at the same time performs well??

Yeah ... and new coincedently ... lol .
I only use it inside to climb over the kids pile of toys once every few weeks when the boy is in the mood .

get some pro line chisles for it wiked tyre mate
the axial are a good truck out of the box for the price

anyone tried those 1/8 crawlers that are all over ebay.
wondered if they would be a good starting point for someone.

i have looked at and tried a few of them,the acme one is ok but still needs a few dollars spent on it to make it work really good

Stick with one of the known brands of 1/10 crawlers. The Axial ARTR, Tamiya CR-01 or the Berg/Gladiator. Either way you go expect to spend about $500 min.

The biggest problem with any 1/8 crawler is getting good tyres and as it is now you only have a choice of the stock tyres that come on them or the Moabs.
The Losi Mini Rock Crawler has had good reviews and can be used for scale projects in the future if that's the way he wanted to go .. Also Losi have a 1:10 comp crawler coming out at the end of May which has been doing very well in comps in the US .. So I have read.

thanks guys, i was originally looking at the A10 i might just go with that... 500 is about what i expected, he is selling his motorbike to fund it... so if anyone knows anyone llooking for a 50cc motorbike i have one for sale, it's a honda and has all the riding gear to go with it, PM me if u want any more details....
