View Full Version : What ISP are you with
Since its in the chat box I thought maybe a poll to see who is with who would be fun.
I'm with bigpond, and with the exception of having to reset my modem and router every now and again I've been trouble free!

I won't deal with Telstra ever again, we moved everything to IInet and the mobiles on 3 and so far it's been all good (just don't try and call 3 customer service!)

Yep , very very disapointed with Telstra , never again .
We are with optus and have been from pretty much the day i joined up here 5ish years ago .
We have had 2 issues in this time and ive got someone out within 2 working days and problems always fixed .
For my USB wireless im with Virgin . Many people bag them but personally i get EXCELLENT reception everywhere ive tried it and also at our holiday house in Philip Island and their rates are close to the best at 6Gig for $90 for 3 months expiry ( prepaid ) . $90 with Telstra buys you about 1 gig for 1 month , Telstra are the biggest rip off bastards on the market HANDS DOWN
Telstra need to learn the way to make money and keep customers is to offer good deals and not overpriced plans and bad service. Westnet and iinet both grew into the large and popular ISP's from offering what bigpong never has but still they dont learn. When the fiber to the home network is completed telstra is stuffed as they will no longer hold us and ISP's to ransom as they control the copper network (Thank howard for that)

1 thing about telstra , their wireless USB works ABSOLUTELY EVERYWHERE and telstra know it and use that as their backup to justify their pricing , i guess businesses that dont care dont mind getting raped in the ass ( no Vass ) on their pricing

Anyone who consciously chooses to go with bigpond, shouldn't be allowed to use a computer again, and should never be allowed to reproduce!

See I just use a Netgear wireless router modem I bought from my bro's business, we use them at work, I'm familiar with them so I stick to what I know I mean I am not a computer tech head by any means. Some of the routers that ISP's offer you are a bit well, curious!

Actually the getting fixed thing is what enabled me to buy more cars.;)

Nothing wrong with Netgear at all. Them, Dlink and Billion are the decent common brands, Linksys are excellent but not as common.
Yeah I have only ever used Billion and find them to be real good. Had a problem with a netgear one before(Hence switching to Billion). Bigpete what router are you using?

I wish Omen were still around.
Despite being sold nearly ten years ago I recon they would still be considered one of if not the best and most innovative ISP's in Australia if not the world.

Don't ask me why, but i have heard Billion routers are better with IInet than any other, Belkins with Westnet.
I'm with IInet, have been since dial-up days. I'm on an ADSL2+ plan and have only had one real issue that was solved over the phone with an (eventual) router reset to defaults. I am fairly close to the exchange (5.3kms) so I don't know if this is factor in better reliability. In ground phone lines are fairly new too....

wow, i'm shocked at the number of bigpond users.
i seriously don't understand why people would pay so much for a service that is faster and cheaper elsewhere.
in saying that, its taken a while, but i'm starting to realise i can charge more and people will still buy it. the annoying customers go away, you make more money and do less work. prob the telstra business model right there.

thats easily answered ... telstra is a name that people who don't know, trust ... they have been around forever ... a lot of older people will choose them without even comparing prices ...because they *were* the only telco in australia for a long time ... it doesnt matter that they charge more for less ...

yeh they have ftth (fibre to the home) .... we can only hope...this government rollout will give fttn (fibre to the node) which means you will share your fibre with x other people ... they havent released details yet .. but knowing the government expect that x to be equal to an amount that will give u crippled speed ...

i have ftth with telstra, and its a ripoff. speed is indeed crippled or just limited so they can rip you off and charge for extra speed that dosent cost them anything more, and because its all owned by telstra we have no option but to use them. the whole estate is stuffed. uploads also count on your quota and the quota's are the usual telstra stupidly small and then a ripoff when you go over.
we are planning on selling and moving just because of the crap phone and internet service.
anytime telstra is involved the end user gets raped in the arse.

have seen alot of cable being laid, but most is still copper cable around the place, exchanges are overloaded and to far between, if everyone ends up on fibre, i'm very sure they will regulate speeds to very slow as there will be heaps of traffic, although fibre optic could handle it i doubt the rest of the infrastucture would be set up to work at the fastest speeds, to much money, govt would rather put it into there retirement funds... my avg isp speed is 5mbps.... pretty slow, but people don't realise what there missing out on... most high speeds are trumped up and not a true representation of your data rate... higher speed, more packet data lost etc... I don't know much, but I got annoyed at playing online games only to have heaps of lag and be beaten by not better players but there internet connection...

true, when i worked for highway 1 and lived in a share house we had a superfast connection and lag was almost non existent, we would game every night and kicked arse. didn't do as well at lans as everyone was equal.

That is so true obz .. I have been on Telstra for a year now and about the first 4 months were great .. then they decided to stop sending my bills in the mail .. Telsta's webiste sucks balls so I never went on there to check my bills and just waited for one to come to my house .. now I find I have a large overdue amount because they wouldn't post me a bill .. and now to fix the problem I have to fill out some bs forms because somehow its my fault .. I'm gonna ring them up and abuse them again now :D
Woohoo .. no more Telstra! .. I was told (basically word for word) apparently it is my fault I have an outstanding account I should have checked my account on-line (even though you need to enter 3 passwords and whatever other bs you have to go through to view your account on-line) and that Telsta is able to change it's policies and procedures without warning and basically you have to roll with it .. now I can't post up what I said about that otherwise it will be moderated but the first girl I spoke to isn't having a very good day now =/ .. so I told them their customer service is way below par and I'm jaded by the whole situation and don't want to deal with Telstra anymore .. so anyone know any good ISP's that I can go with? ... =D

It amazes me how many people seem to instantly associate their phone line with Telstra and automatically choose bigpond as an ISP.
Their plans are way over priced for the limits they give you. iiNet offer much betters deal PLUS they DONT count your uploads as part of your monthly quota. (unless you use naked dsl)
I've only ever had to call iiNet twice in the past 5 years and both times my call was answered in under 15 seconds. One of the problems was with my answering machine and was nothing to do with them.

yeah, plus once you go past your cap on bigpond and other companies, they cap your upload speed which make sending emails frustrating and playing online games pointless... at least iinet leave your uploads intact.... I went to a business account to get the extra upload as residential plans are capped at 1mb to 1.5mb, now i upload at 2.3mb... ping is still good at 10ms...

hehe, yeah that's what I meant.
Would be nice if they also didn't count my downloads ;)
