Hey Guys,

Im not too sure of its exact name, but basically off the engine is a gear, which goes onto a bigger plastic gear. Well i stripped this plastic gear yesterday.

Now, i have a spare one, but i was wonder can you get a metal one like on the engine? Metal onto plastic doesnt sit right with me, or was the damage caused by it not being adjusted properly?? I never looked into that b4 i went and hacked up. I assume this is the case.

Can the plastic gears be reliable? any tips on proper adjustment? thanks.

James

most pinion gears (on the motor) should be metal.

most spur gear's are kevlar or plastic. try and get a kevlar gear...

also note you need to match the tooth profile carefully, using the wrong sizes can result in a cooked motor or destroyed cogs.. :)

How can i tell the diff between a Kevlar and plastic gear??

Is it pretty obvious??

Thanks mate.

You will be able to see the kevlar weave in the kevlar gear....same as graphite reinforced ones.

You can also get steel gears.

A stripped spur wheel is an indication of 1 or 2 things.
Firstly you may have the wrong pitch. IE the teeth on the clutchbell are different to the teeth on the spur. This will chew through the spur wheel quick smart.
Another cause could be the mesh between the 2 is not quite right. To much slack will chew the spur. If it's too tight then you could be loading up the bearings too much.

The best way to get a good mesh is to cut a thin strip of paper and stick it between the spur and clutchbell, push the engine in against the spur and then tighten down the mounts. Pull the paper out (it should look like a crinkle cut) and viola, near perfect mesh.

You could go for a steel spur but that will mean extra rotational mass whioch will lead to a drop in performance.

i had some issues with one of my spurs on the weekend. i could not work out why there was a "rrRRrrr..........rrRRrrr........rrRRrrr...... .." type noise coming from the gearbox.

i spent a long time diagnosing this to find that the spur gear was an oval shape and on one half would be too loose to the pinion gear [on the motor] and on the other half was too tight.

ive since gone back to the factory Kyosho item (which has more teeth than the smaller spur i downgraded to) and just upped the pinion size by two teeth.

(two teeth increase or decrease on a pinion makes a CRAP LOAD of difference btw)

hmm, i did this the other day to my tg10, thanks for the head's up farmboy on getting the mesh correct.

Funnily i had striped about 5 teeth but i tell ya what, a new one is bloody pricey!
