View Full Version : Question for 1/8 guys
Ok guys. I want to know what pinions you use! Brand of pinion, tooth range and long/short shank
I personally like Robinson Racing and the Losi gears are pretty good.
Range between 11 and 14, and so far only have use for short shank, although if I ditch the Tekno clutch on the Losi buggy I'll need long shank for that....

I'd stay with the Tekno Clutch, saves a LOT of drivetrain wear.
On the Savage though I am using Robinson Racing Pinions. I didn't like the Novak ones, very noisy!

I've used most brands/types available:
RC Monster - short-shank - good quality (new version out looks very nice and haven't tried yet. Look alot like one supplied with Offna Hyper9E)
Losi - OK but not very wide teeth
Impact RC - long shank - they seem to wear OK.
Ofna - Pinion supplied with Hyper9E looks very nice and so far wearing and meshing very well.
HPI - got a couple of these recently and look good but haven't tried yet.
Used most of the above from 13 to 16 tooth.
Clutch isn't really necessary on a buggy, but you ought to see the RC Monster Slipperential I stuck in the RC8T.
Works very well...... On clay.
Paul.... The slipper clutch on my Associated runs the 46T spur, and I stuck a 2050kv Neu in it, but running 11T isn't anywhere near as fast, (top) as the direct drive, but with 13 gets hot, and I have a 12 coming but I think it'll still get warm.
You run less that 50 spur dont you? So what #pinion?

Losi 8T runs 46T spur and generally run around 14-16T pinion depending on conditions without running too hot.

If you're motor seems to be running unusually hot as an old 2200KV Neu motor was in my buggy suspect a de-magnetised rotor!

I usually use 46/12 or 46/13 with the 2200kv neu 1515 at racing with the truggy. I've mostly only used rc monster pinions, except for an 11t RR pinion (on 6s and not at racing). From what I've heard on other forums it sounds like the rc monster ones and RR ones are a bit harder than some of the others.
Yeah my other truggy with the 1515 runs 50/13 and it runs fast and cool, as some of you know.
I didnt think the 46 tooth would need less than 13 with a lower kv motor. I will tell you all now though when I first ran it i had it geared with a 15 and after 2 minutes or so she was running at 220 F, so I've probably screwed the bearings too.

Usually if motors go past 200F it starts to demagnetize the the rotor, and then the motor will never run as cool as it did, and it will use more current to do the same work.
I don't think a 2050kv 1515 with 46/15 gearing should get that hot that quick without something being wrong with it all ready. Were you running it overly hard to get that hot? Even then something doesn't sound right.
Loose motor wires, or breaks in that stiff brittle wire the neu's have can cause high motor temps.

I was running it fairly hard, because I was testing for runtime for this weekend, with the 6500 maxamps.
It could be loose wires or something, and I'll look into it.
I have a Castle 2200 combo coming.
Bought it for $279usd as opposed to the 1515/1Y at $255usd.
I know the quality isn't quite the same but it'll get me through.
