Help!!! Pinion trouble with the Slash

I'm having trouble getting smaller pinion's to mesh correctly with the spur gear. I've dropped my pinion size from 19t to 17t with stock 86tspur gear.
Trouble is that to get the correct mesh the pinion grub screw makes contact the spur gear...
If i move the pinion any futher out there isn't enough contact for the pinion grub screw to lock onto the flat of the motor shaft. Has anyone else come across this problem or know how to get around it?

what motor are you using?

yeah on a long shaft motor have the grub screw end facing out
