View Full Version : Electric F1

For those of you at RCWA this is a repost, but anyway thought i'd post here too since this is mainly an electric forum.
I'm in the hunt for an electric F1 car... it will be my first electric RC. been looking at a Tamiya F103 which a bloke is selling brand new because he's had it as a shelf queen and the car has supposedly never been run (it will come RTR, as the guys is gonna build it for me)
Anyway just saw a new add at RCTech for an F201.
http://www.rctech.net/forum/australia-sale-trade/321381-fs-tamiya-f201.html
What you folks think of this? It certainly looks like it's been kept in good condition... got a fair bit of spare arms and such... will have to buy the motor and esc and the battery... imagine not too much for basic stuff... not sure if it comes with servo and radio gear, but i've got an AM futaba that i can chuck in it and have a spare plastic gear servo which will do the job...
Anyway i'm trying to contact the seller will see how it goes..
Let me know what you think/what i should be looking out for.
Also, is there any support for this F1 over any other F1 in Perth? ie any hobby shops know lots about it and maybe even stock parts?
Cheers
Mus
I dont think there is a huge following here in perth for F1 but I would say that stanbridges hobbys would have something on the shelf or would have no dramas with get parts you need.

As we discussed earlier Lb and I S , below is the Mansell Kyosho 1:8 Electric F1 .
Bought this about 15 years ago and was a bit ahead of its time looking at all the new chassis available today .
With all this F1 talk its made me pull it out today from hiding , as you can see its gathered HEAPS of dust over the years .
Ive got the cockpit and driver in the box as well but havnt installed them for the pix .
The drivetrain is lighter than my F201 which was allready smooth , and sooooo smooth i reckon it will run a hobbywing 9T NO ISSUES AT ALL . Infact im gonna pull it apart , clean the hell out of it and might throw 1 in tonight .
Enjoy the pix . To get an idea of size ive got a 1:10 RC in the pix as well .
PS .. Underchassis is brand spanker new , i always ran it with 2 layers of contact so it wouldnt scratch ( as i do with all my on roaders )

Does it run standard 1/8th foams on it ? The rears look they are on there way out.

im back from work now, 3 weeks bobbing about in the straights of malacca dreaming of starting my F104 PRO build and wild paint schemes just isnt good for anyone :)
time to go grab a decent servo for the build. Anyone know how the stock foams are? Also, after just a brief scan thru the manual, whats the best method for mounting foams? they dont show any glue etc in the manual and well, ive only done rubbers.

The builds done now, grabbed a Futaba 9551 digi servo for the steering. Heres a few pics, ive trimmed the body but am going to look for some reflective type of silver paint.
In the pics you can see my kids scoping out the F1 :D
Mash13

I just threw the silver can in to get an idea of how its all going to look. the battery runs up the middle and the esc and rec mount on the two tabs that stick out from the chassis.

Awesome stuff... i was planning on geting one of these... but being my first F1 i thought the carbon fibre would snap into a million pieces pretty fast :P
After i finish breaking remotebandits F201 i'll prolly buy one of these kits...
Still looking for a good place to buy f201 spares... so if anyone know any hobby shops in aus that sell spares for F201's let us know...

This morning my parents ring up saying they wanted to take the kids for a few hours ( we had public holiday today ) so it gave me a few hours to sit down and work on the F201 .
Anyway , i installed the Hobbywing 9T , micro spektrum and a 2S 4000mah lipo .
THing went awesome for the first test run and saw potential so sat down and got to the serious end of the kit .
Put it on the set up board , adjusted the cambers , toe in/out , built some totally MAAAAAAD shocks bla bla bla .
Charged the lipo , hit the tyres with the tyre warmers till they were REALLY HOT then gave it a burl .
Totally awesome , wrapped with it , this thing drove exactly where i pointed it
On the second pack i got about 5 minutes in and just purely lost it into the gutter .
As most of you know from my shelf queen reputation , id ussually CURSE the hell out of everything for scratching my car but let me tell you , this thing flicked the ass end into the gutter , rear wheel gave way and flicked inwards , front left wheel broke off a mount and lifted onto the top of the car and the front wing cracked ...... F**K it was AWESOME , i swear it was the best . Im soooo spewing i didnt get that on slow mo film coz it would have gotten a million views on youtube .
Anyway , LB ... do a full set up on a set up board and the thing will be a dart

Tire warmers ??? I use sun screen on the foam tires, works a treat and most of the guys racing use sun screen also, better than any of the hobby shop shell tire additive
LordAnubis
03-11-2009, 07:14 PM
bahahah... what exactly did you break on the front left ?? did the wheel jsut crack or did you break the knuckles and front arms and everything else?
If this happened to my f201... i reckon i would get depressed and go on serious meds... i'm gonna get a better electric system... probably the hobbywing 25a or 35a ... will keep the motor tame though... will see what i can get from stanbridges when i go to pick up my wheels... they prolly don't have the EZRun but will see... i'll see what they have that'll fit in...
In terms of setup im' quite happy with mine... if anything i think it can do with a little less camber.. but the toe on the front is pretty good (i've put a bit more toe out from what you sent me)... Also i reckon the shock springs could be a bit softer... they are bit too stiff i reckon and i'd prefer to drive it with a little bit more "movement" in the suspension...

Hey LA , the hobbywing 13T or 9T is absolutely perfect for this car .
I used to run the mamba systems in it and they just shredded diffs and cars were beyond control but now that im on the 9T 35amper its got the perfect balance but you have to go lipo .
I broke the front and rear uprights , rear snapped at the toe in/out arm and the front i snapped the bottom swing arm , i hit the gutter pretty hard .
As far as foam tyres , ive had them on there before , just used standard on road ones worked fine but once again the 7700kv mamba shredded the crap out of them .

ahem... 25th post... ahem.... so i got a brushless system today... speed passion drift maste esc and motor... appretnly motor is equivalent to about a 13t. ESC fits wicked sticks into the radio tray... i'm quite happy with it :) i jsut gotta figure out why it makes "clicking" noise on take off... it makes the clicky noise like it's missing gears on take off on the floor.... but not if i hold the wheels off the gorund... it's wierd...
remotebandit
06-11-2009, 08:34 PM
when you spin the motor , does it grab when you turn it like the old brushed style motors or is it a free spinning 1 like the mambas and the hobbywings .
If it jitters when you free spin it then that noise is normal . ( then again i cant confirm without hearing it )

aren't those washers i see sitting in the actual front wheels ??? A guy at a hobby shop in perth saw my f201, and reckons someoens glues rear tyres on front rims... that's why the tyres hit the steering knuckle..... and yeah if i roll the car on the floor....it makes that same noise.... i might take it to the hobby shop and get them to look at it... i'll take the thing apart first and check out spur and such...

F201 is the ducks guts mate truly awesome i want one, 4wd inboard shocks real weapons. I just got F109 with brushless setup for only $135us plus $35us post absolute bargain and most F103 parts fit but F109 is wider and apparently better on track
LordAnubis
31-03-2010, 07:26 PM
That's a damn good deal !!! F109 and F104 and F103 share many parts i believe. I took the F104 and F201 to Mach One on Tuesday, and to my surprise the 104 handled a lot better than the 201. It must be something to do with the tyres i bet.
None the less... I agree, F201 is an awesome machine. It's a pain in the ass to maintain (not very user friendly when doing work on the diff and stuff) but it's damn good to drive.
For the record the F104 hop up parts parts can be bought from Mach One (they stock the items), so go on down and support the local hobby shop :)

2010 Western Australian Formula 1 RC series
Round two race report 24/3/2010
Round 2 of the Western Australian Formula 1 RC series, sponsored by Ryper Hobbies, went north of Perth to the PRECC indoor track in Midland. With a change of surface from outdoor asphalt to indoor carpet, as well as no traction additive being permitted, it was shaping up to be a very open meet. Drivers scrambled to find the best set up without the aid of traction compound, and lap times slowly dropped during practice.
Qualifying in the WAF1RC is based on the fastest single lap driven by drivers, over all of the qualifying rounds. The three fastest drivers were:
1st Luke Carson
2nd Keri MacDonald
3rd Daniel Kinson
The top three qualifiers carried their form into the two finals. Luke, Keri and Daniel managed to stay clear of the rest of the field, and the final results matched the starting line up, with Luke Carson in first, Keri MacDonald second, and Daniel Kinson third.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v132/Fragasaurus/Radio%20Control%20Pics/WAF1RC%20Photos/IMG_1095edit.jpg
Final placings for Round two:
Luke Carson 1st
Keri MacDonald 2nd
Daniel Kinson 3rd
Joshua Pekel 4th
Viorel Parachiviou 5th
Shane Gillies 6th
Daniel Kearney 7th
With round two completed, Keri’s second place keeps him in the number one position for the Series with 18 points, with Luke and Daniel Kinson tied for second on 15 points.
Series points table:
1st Keri Macdonald 18
2nd Daniel Kinson 15
3rd Shane Gilles 10
4th Zacka Chan 6
5th Sean Baker 4
6th Viorel Parachiviou 4
7th Josh Pekel 4
8th Daniel Kearney 3
The series returns in May, with round three. If you are looking for your next F1RC fix though, make sure you enter the WA State titles.
http://www.rctech.net/forum/australian-events/377851-2010-aarcmcc-wa-electric-road-state-titles.html
F1 is a support class, and it's your chance to wow family, friends and women by saying "You know, I am the reigning WA Champion"
See you there.

I mentioned this car in another thread Dags .
I tell you what , they are massive bang for the buck , awesome cars with a nice speed and pretty good cornering but for some reason Lordanimus and i have both had issues with them centering on trim .
LAs solution was an F104 front end which was a direct swap and fixed the problem .
But yeah , those F109s are an awesome bit of kit otherwise
LordAnubis
26-06-2010, 09:42 PM
Although it'll set you back a bit of moolah, id suggest getting the F104Pro. You could try the F104 F60 if yo uwant to go a little cheaper (which is the same chassis as F104Pro, but without the carbon fibre, or blue allot parts, without bling basically)
That being said, for racing, the F109 will probably be good enough. I don't reckon it looks as blingy as the F104Pro, but yeah it's pretty much the same car. The worst thing about the F109 is battery changes are a pain the in the sphincter, and many people have problems with trying to drive it in a straight line. It will handle fully sick habib around corners though. It's really REALLLY good around corners.
In terms of Parts support. Mach One in Kwinnana are excellent for parts support for the F104 ( they even stock hop up parts for it). Stannies stocks a few parts too for the F104, but stannies can order things in ofcourse. Other than that online parts support is great through the tamiya shop. F109 parts i'm not sure, but the F109 rear is the pretty much the same as the F104, and the front end for the F109 can be completely replaced with the front end for a Tamiya F103 (which htere's plenty of parts support for).
Hahah hope that doens't confuse you :)
Hahah hope that doens't confuse you :)

My F109 hasn't had any issues with trim or steering, pretty much goes where you point it. It's a great car, great price (Stellahobbies on ebay has it for $130 US shipped).
It's been tricky for me to stop the rear from stepping out late in the corner, but I figure that's just a tyre or tuning issue, rather than a defect in the car. i'm sure I'll fix it when I get a bit of free time to do some testing.
There's a new chassis from Exotek for the HPI F10 that has interested me, but you'll still have to buy hop-ups for it (ball-diff etc), so that's discouraged me somewhat.
The F103/F104 from Tamiya are of course, nice kits. There was an issue with getting Lipo to fit if I recall correctly, but maybe that been fixed.
Tech Racing make an F1, apparently though they also designed the F104 for Tamiya. You can see them on the RCMart website, not sure if they are lipo friendly.
The duck's nuts of course is the Corally F1. Eichkay and Luke, as well as Viorel, run one of these and it's a super piece of kit. they retail at around the $250US mark.
RC Mart, RC Market, RC Model and RC Mushroom in Hong Kong all stock F1 kits. RC Champ in Japan would be cheap for Tamiya. Ebay also has plenty to chose from. D-Drive sports is also a good place to browse.
Anyhoo, good luck shopping, see you at the next WAF1RC meet maybe?

Some of the F109 tracking problems can be solved by small adjustments to the rear trailing link turnbuckle, mine drives nice and straight $125 us with cheapo brushless system can't go wrong. Man i want the tamiya tyrell six wheeler for shelfer the thing looks sik

Space isn't really an issue. keeping the wiring tidy, especially the thick and rigid motor wires, is probably key in order to fit the body on properly. I just run something similar to the EZRun 25A systems in my F104 and 109.

Motor limit in the f1 series is 10.5 but most don't use 10.5 anyways, as it over powers the cars anyways... I use a 17.5 and I can still over power the car on perch with this... But it's perfect for big tracks like bunno and bayswater..
Some guys run 21.5 and silver cans or 27t .. It's all over the place on what guys use...

I'm thinking about getting one at that price too but I couldn't see in the manual if it will take a hard case lipo, can you advise? ;)
I don't need pics I been locking at the boxes of them for days now.

The venom4000 20c stick packs are roar legal and meet the hard case requirements. With f1 you only need one battery as they use so little power top ups between races take only 10mins

Beev 30
10-07-2010, 06:50 PM
ok Hpi os not what i thought it would be ...lipos dont fit and ball diff is a must as well as bearings ..as well my kit was not right...the front axle was not drilled to pu the pin in to slide the wheel adaptor on to fit front wheel...but BigPete is swaping mine out monday so i can mount the last tire,,,,body is kinda hooocky with pieces taped on to try and make it cooler,,,,end result is i have a new hpi ten ill sell just built no run ill sell for 120 in my pocket...lol just the lipo not fitting has turned me off..

To be honest, can't say i'm surprised about the F10. If you want a cheap F1, the only way to go is 3racing F109.
Best F1 of them all though is the Tamiya F104Pro. It costs more though, but i reckon it's well worth it!!!

mik068

nitro foams, the car has standard hex so it can fit normal touring car rims. The kit rims & tires are still in the box they would be great on a 40 deg day

Try using some 220mm foam tyres, they are the same size as the kit F104's , pre mounted and ready to go just the rim is over sized lol, also for those of you that are running the F104-pro use and normal stick pack instead of the Lipo, the car handles alot better with the added weight balances it out nicely

Not sure what type of track you run on but i love the kit foams Type A(run on a bitupave track) the rear tyres wear really well but the fronts seem to wear real quickly, trying out a set of Taymia B or C fronts

The WA F1 series that dan setup has 10.5 as the maximum motor... At bunno track you might be able to put that power down .. On carpet forget about anything quicker than 17.5 and at bayswater 10.5 is a bit extreme , I was struggling with my corally and it runs super fat tires .. I'm going back to the 17.5

LordAnubis

Nah not played with any gearing. I have a 25 pinion, and i chewed out my 104 spur before i got a handle on the car, so only got the 98t left. I have got the spacer ordered though so that ill be able to more easily get spurs and pinions for the damn thing. Also got the alloy wing mount coming, and the 3 racing camber adjsutment plate coming. Not too much more alloy i can put on the damn thing !!!!

Well when i get mine you're more than welcome to borrow it. Not sure when i'm gonna be at a race next, however even though i know it's gonna be a bad idea, i want to give the F109 a test run (with its 13t motor and all ! :P ) to see how annoying it'll be to use for racing. Also next time i make it to the track i want to try out the F201 (4wd F1) to see how much better 4wd would be around the track.
That being said though, it's only a 5 buck part and say 5 bucks for shipping... so save up ya lunch moeny for a few days and you should be right :)

What time does racing start? Do we set up the track first? What time do you start that? Are there any food/drink facilities? and what time does racing/packup finish?
I'm prolly gonna be racing the F109, which has a speed passion 13turn in it. I don't want to damage my F104 with the piping since i have no rc budget at all... and i want to keep the 104 for bayswater ashphalt :) I'll take the 104 down anyway.

A few of the guys today said to go with a low-profile servo.
LordAnubis
29-08-2010, 08:41 PM
Go to rypers and get a savox metal geared servo for 95 odd bucks. They are not really low profile but certainly are shorter than standard servos. That'll do the job jsut fine. They are 10 kilo servos i'm pretty sure. Plenty good enough, will last a life time in the F1.

Rypers have the F104 on the shelf, $190 I believe

Indeed, rypers have one left in stock after i bought mine (well wi'll pick it up this arvo after work). The F104Pro with body for $195.... frikkin BARGAIN!!! I bought it just for spares... if i ever need them, havent had anything break other than spurs wearing out with sand and stuff on-road.
Now to covince Rypers to stock a few parts and i'll have parts supply two minutes from my house :D !!!

Spent the afternoon building the 104Pro kit that i got just for spares. Such an awesome kit.
So here are all my cars.
http://members.amnet.net.au/~ashiqp/khalil/IMG_0090.JPG
Almost enough to make my own field of F1's. Ahahaha that's prolly the only way i'll ever get a podium spot :D !!!!!
Here are some closeups under the hood.
My carpark basher.
http://members.amnet.net.au/~ashiqp/khalil/IMG_0091.JPG
F201, pretty much stock. Currently out of action because i can't be assed changing the front gear cover which is cracked, hence the broken suspension on front right. She's a runner though, all the gear in her ready to go.
The most awesome F201 is next.
http://members.amnet.net.au/~ashiqp/khalil/IMG_0092.JPG
F201, COMPLETELY hopped up!!!! Got every hop up ever made... well except one, it doesn't have cvds, it's still got the original dogbones. This one needs some chassis protector, esc and rx to make it go. Will make very very very limited apprearances at Bayswater so consider yourself lucky if you see this zipping around the track at some stage.

Next up is the carpet racer.
http://members.amnet.net.au/~ashiqp/khalil/IMG_0093.JPG
F109. because the 3racing front end is a piece of crap, i put the entire f104 front end onto this thing. Only other hop up this has is the 3racing out tuned diff, which is a bit wierd, but sure as hell is A LOT better than the original diff. This is my carpet racing car so appears at PRECC whenever i show up.
Then comes the sexiest of them all. The black top racer.
http://members.amnet.net.au/~ashiqp/khalil/IMG_0094.JPG
F104Pro. Pretty much every single alloy hop up there is. Pretty sure i have them all, other than alloy uprights but they cost a fair bit so cant really justify the expense. This is the car that is commonly seen humiliating that incompetent Massa at Bayswater :p Races only at Bayswater.
And lastly the spares car.
http://members.amnet.net.au/~ashiqp/khalil/IMG_0095.JPG
F104Pro. Bought for a ridiculously cheap price from Rypers. Totally stock, as you can see no running gear in it. I will be giving this a run at PRECC sometime. It's setup exactly as stock so will be intersting to see how it runs on a carpet track straight out of the box. Have to sort out an ESC and a rx for it first, and will use the stock silver can.
So that's all of them... hope you enjoyed it.

From the one or two people who have tried it on RCTech, its apparently the ducks nuts. StephenR on this forum has also purchased it, but hasn't received it yet. I'm not a fan of the link system in any case. I prefer the simpleness of a t-bar arrangement.
The purpose of this chassis though is to give you more rear traction, which to be honest i have no problem with using my F104Pro. Others drove my car on the weekend too and commented on the good handling of it as well. That being said my car has a 17t with 0 motor timing and low esc timing, and it's under geared!!! My car doesnt exactly break speed records down the straight, but i can pretty much go full throttle around the whole bayswater track.
At the end of the day i'm happy with my 24 second lap times. Theres plenty of faster guys out there but i enjoy the racing and the sledging on the drivers stand and having my car under control for the whole 5 min race.
Also, check out the price of that chassis !!!! not exactly cheap for a $200 odd car, then spend 130 bucks for a chassis. The front battery locker arrangement looks interesting though, and it looks like it is a lot more accomodating to a bigger range of lipos than the standard chassis, which is very picky on the battery you use without having to modify the chassis in any way.
Over all if you got money go for it, im sure it'll be great!:fonzie:

I think its realistic if not on the cheap side, considering they have grabbed a bunch of genuine yokomo parts from a $300+ 12th scale pan car.

I have the EXO Chassis on my HPI, seems to be a nice kit and did improve the handling considerably.
i paid $170 for mine,
very good quality and good to build:fonzie:

The 2011 Stanbridges Hobbies AARCMCC WA On-Road Electric State Titles are being held at West Coast Model Rally Club in Bayswater (Moojebing Rd) and are only 1 week away. This will be an exciting weekend of racing in the lead up to the Nationals. If you are unable to race, come down and check out the finals. They start at midday on sunday 27th March with presentations following straight after.
So get on down, check it out, ask as many questions as you like. And we hope to see you racing on the track soon.

Spares much?
I finally got my big order of parts from RC Mart.. it only took them three weeks!!!
5512
Ontop of the two complete f104 rollers that i have, i ordered .... 5 sets of tyres, 3 low profile servos, 2 wing sets, 2 steel drive shafts, brand new x12 17.5 motor, spare LRP TC Spec ESC, alloy motor mount, alloy pivot post, alloy camber mount, alloy servo mount, bulk soft t-bars, front arm set, new NIMH.
A few more things i've ordered from http://www.topgunrchobbies.com.au/ which have not arrived yet. They have an awesome store, a shame they don't do any tamiya gear.
So yeah... think i'm all set for the WA states... and the nationals.... :) :D  You may be the king of rc cars RB, but i'm pretty sure i'm the king of spares :P

Well racing was certainly interesting last night at PRECC.... We all had record slow lap times, it may have had something to do with the ladies wearing short shorts, jumping around playing netball and sweating and bending over and stuff.... maybe... certainly was good entertainment between races (and a few stoppages during the race :? )... They'll be there for the whoel season apparently... its going to be slow racing for a few months now
A few trophy events coming up for carpet racing...
Sunday 29th May there is a Winter Championship. Trophy event, and ofcourse F1s are most welcome if we get a class together. This is the 5th sunday of the month, and so there will not be any off-road racing excuses from all you pansy ass bitches who choose off-road as opposed to F1. So pull your fingers out, get of your asses off the couch/AMain and come trophy hunting! I can not guarantee netball chicks to perv on at this event.
Wednesday 15th June there is PRECC F1 Challenge. Basically an F1 only trophy event. From the talk being generated looks like a lot of old timers are dusting off their f1s for this event. So all you off-road/part time F1 racers might as well jsut rock up so that you can be laughed at and humiliated by us real f1 racers. There will be netballing chicks at this event for some entertainment.
So yes, some good F1 events coming up, and i expect you all to be there... no excuses from you blokes... otherwise my cousins may or may not deliver some packages to your homes... don't say i didnt warn you. 8-)
Not sure how many ppl are going to find this post, but here goes anyways..
I'd basically like to propose a rule change to the "WAF1 Rules WCMRC v3" that is currently being used by West Coast..
Proposal - add 1S lipo setups and allow mod motors to be used
How can this be done fairly?
Doing some research. ROAR legal 10.5 turn motors @ 7.4V will do between 21000 and 32000 rpm, averaging around 26000rpm.
I'm proposing that a chassis running a 1S lipo would be allowed a maximum of 25000 rpm, roughly 20% penalty to the highest rpm 10.5 motor.
You could also limit this via the kV of the motor at say 6500kv which would mean 3.7V * 6500kV = 24050rpm.
Another option would be to say 1S setups, no lower than 5.5T (as almost all of them are under 6000kV).
Basically, there are options to allow 1S setups to be competitive with 10.5T 2S setups without giving either an unfair advantage.
Also, given that the rules allow boost enabled speedies.. who is going to feel threatened by 1S mod motor setup?
Thoughts anyone?
-Mark
Ps. I have actually read a lot of the discussion on rctech and team adrenaline re: F1 rules..
..to be honest I'd actually like everything to be open.. remember the late 80s and early 90s when F1s weren't for pussies?

So i went to bunnings and bought some more hooks for my wall... here's the result.

So from left to right, Carpet F104, F201, Tarmac F104, F104 with F103 front and rear end, F104 with Exotek chassis kit.
Now i've only got one more F201 with carbon everything sitting in a box... Why didn't i put that up too you ask? Because im a short bastard and cant reach any higher thats why :D
