Hi guys

I'm a newby..... now thats out of the way :o

I have plans on getting e-revo and Savage flux. before i jump into it, I'm planning to stack up on lipos so i dont run out of juice when i'm having fun running them.

i currently use 3s lipos to run my rustler. brilliant little machine. (personal opinion)

Problem:
Mixed info on the internet.... should i get myself 4x 2s lipos or 4x 3s lipos??

:confused::confused:
some info somewhere (can't find it anymore.. sorry) that 3s Lipos may fry ESC.. (i have fried my purposely overgeared VXL; ESC has fried even with a dual fan mod... suprisingly the motor still works?) white smoke coming out of it while running the rustler then it died... cool:.... expensive exercise to replace.... don't want it happening to the new trucks....

Anyway, what would be the best way to go....... 3s i think is better but i would like some opinions....

thanks heaps....

4s Lipo is plenty, yes 6s Lipo can fry the ESC prematurely.

If you want to use Lipos I recommend Intellect 5000mah 40C Hardcased Lipos with the Deans tails, they use 10 guage wire and exit out the side not out the top which causes problems with the Savage Flux.

Don't get suckered into cheapy packs, or Maxamps or any of those. You will end up paying for it.

You want at least 130 Amps CONTINUOUS available, so 5000mah 40C is 200 Amps, so a very safe choice.

Personally I use 5 Cell A123 batteries. Near on Bulletproof :)

Nex and I will agree on the Intellect. Same cells as Fantom and SMC, and a very good battery.
I'll also agree on the 4s call. 6s or even 5s is fun but very unnecessary, and will end up making issues...

And don't be afraid of enjoying your Rustler. I have a couple and they're great fun....

Yeah, only reason I run 5s A123 is that they are 3.3v cells not 3.7v.

e-revo also need wires to exit from the ends

Thats also true, Fantom and the round Intellect (looks like NiMh) will work, as will some SMC. The common Intellect has the plug in wires and wont work with the Erevo, as for the E Savage... NEXX?

No Intellect also makes a version where the wires exit the side and don't use plugs. The plug in types while great for TC's are impossible to fit in the E-Revo / E-Savage Battery Boxes.

See here, Intellect 40C Lipo with Deans.

Hi guys!

Thanks for everyone who responded. it is very useful information.

I'm glad i logged in to check replies as i was actually on my way out in half and hour to get any 4x 3s lipos to match my current packs...... :o

Daggs, you're right..... the rustler is good fun. just was not happy at it cause the ESC burnt in less than 2 months (30 day warranty gone) and spent more to upgrade most of the parts (RPM parts) and got my self a Mamba Max combo 5700kv for it (because i have 3s lipos). she's up and running but i shouldn't really do constant 4 foot jumps on it :)

when i added all the bills :( i decided to plan forward and just buy both the e-revo (for mocking around in gravel/grass/dirt) and Savage Flux (for Bashing and backflipping).

I've read so much about them being more reliable (I've had my nitro savage since it first came out 3+ years or more ago i think; been doing jumps and the only thing i broke on it were the spur gears and 3 sets of bodies.... normal wear and tear) brilliant toy just that i'm tired of the noise.

If i buy both trucks at least i do not destroy the one truck for trying to do everything that i want. (sorry.. my logic probably doesnt make sense as i'll be spending more to maintain 2 additional trucks.)

sorry back to batts... i've read again somewhere in the internet (i promise i'll store the link one day) that its not recommended to run NIMH on both e-revo and savage flux (is this really true) something to do with "Ripple Current" on NIMH hence i'm chasing up what lipo batts i should get for both trucks. pitty; i have 5 NIMH batts..... might just use them on my drift car.

I may stick with 4x 2s lipos as Nexxus said (thanks!) so i don't have to worry too much about premature heat frying the ESC and keep my current 3s lipos for the rustler.

Nexxus, that link you gave is informative but where in WA can i get them? i'd like to be able to buy batts that would fit straight into all my trucks so i'm guessing i need batts that are not "plug in wires" so it fits on the side batt holders? (am i correct by saying this?)

thanks heaps! more info will help! :D

Yes you want the packs with the side wires, unfortunately buying Lipos locally will often double the price, or the store will have to "order them in".

You could try Sik Hobbies I believe they have Fantom 40C packs for $155

http://www.sikhobbies.com.au/browse/details.asp?ProdID=180703

But note these have wires exiting the top of the pack, over time the wire will fray as it has to be pushed to a right angle to exit the Flux / E-Revo battery holders. For this reason I suggest you only buy side exiting hard cased Lipos such as the intellects. The Intellects also use 10 awg wire which is the same thickness as the ESC so you won't have any unwanted resistance, Intellect Lipos have also been around a lot longer.

Sik in Rocko, (can be delivered to other stores) currently have the Fantom 8000mah 2s hardcase.
They also have the 5000 Fantoms that most of us use, and the 4000mah Intellect with the round edges.

Are they all top exiting wires?

The 4000mah Intellects wouldn't put out enough power for the EBRE or Flux

Yeah they are, and they do, BUT you would have to be carefull with the gearing. One of my Erevos has run them and it was ok, but thats set up for racing, if it was geared to go faster for bashing, yeah, there'd be issues....

I ran a datalogger on the Savage Flux, on a simple take off on 2 * 2s Lipo it wants 120 amps!

Yeah the round Intellect are 30c

I use 3 x 2S lipos in my Castor Fusion and the Emaxx ( I LOVE 6S and am happy to sacrifice a few spur gears a day for the power / speed ) but 1 thing to consider is charging 3 lipos as youll be waiting for ages to do 1 at a time . Ive tried linking the 3 in series with balance adaptors but after issues 1 at a time is the only way to go .

Personally im saving for a 4S

thats another reason I like these A123 cells, after 10 or so cycles when they're "cycled in" they just don't drop out of balance. I can charge them at 10-15amps too :)

thanks nexxus! that fantom and intellect are batts to consider. ill also get side exiting wires.

i guess i just really want the savage flux to flip backwards..... will the 2s lipos do it?

sorry guys just don't want to get it wrong for the flux.... the e-revo should be fine as it doesn't do backflips. it just falls on its back... or does it?

this will probably sound silly but: can you run either trucks with just 1 (2s/3s) lipo? (I might as well ask :o )

The Savage Flux is wired such that it needs 2 packs.

Standing Back Flips you need a pack with Punch, we couldn't get a Maxamps pack to do it, a twin Fantom 40 C's struggled to do it they needed super high traction, Harris RC 30c (2 PACKS) also struggled, seemed the easiest to do on the Intellects, could do them with 4s on my patio which is paving (can be very slick). 5s A123 also does it.

Brushless E-Revo does stand still back flips :)

Thats when the rear wing doesn't hit the ground!

..and how is that comment related to his battery question anyway Emlyn??

Yes well, fairy nuff but lets keep this thread on the topic of Lipos aye? Plenty of E-Revo vs Savage Flux threads on other forums!

Thanks for all your info guys.

Thanks for the e-revo backflip answer as well. :)

I'll read more about the 5s A123 Batteries.

does this mean i have to build my own?? hmm.....

more questions for this... where to get it, how to make it, how to charge with Swallow EQ??

How to plug a balance wire, do i even need one?
