The Expanding Man

Hi guys.
I am fairly new to the hobby, but love tinkering with anything mechanical or electrical, and love loud noises and speed.
This looks like a perfect hobby for me to dip my toe into.
I have been slowly builiding a TA05 kit, that I aim to use for racing.
I am thinking about getting an electric buggy for a bit of bashing, and to help me develop my skills controlling rc cars. I am guessing that a tourer will be difficult to cut my teeth on. Other than clubs, I will have no opportunity to practice with a tourer, as I don't fancy running it on my local roads / car parks due to the potential for damage.
That said - can anyone recommend me with a good buggy to start with? I have done some research, but am bewildered by the choice.
Here are my preferences:
(1) RTR is OK, but I enjoy building the kits.
(2) Something that I can upgrade over time as my skill improves.
(3) Something that is widely acceptable in the racing classes held in the various clubs around Perth. I have had no experience yet with any of the clubs, so am pretty ignorant about the local off-road race scene.
(4) Something with reliability, strength and parts availability.
I'm fairly open regarding budget, so long as it doesn't result in bankruptcy or divorce :D
Cheers.
