Vintage Trans AM racing SPEC CLASS RACING

Some of us bored quickly with the current on-road racing classes, Myself and a few others are keen to get the US based Vintage RC Racing series happening over here in WA, as its a real car shape that has some character which will also allow for some close slower and fun racing..

Proposed plan is to run the class once a month at PRECC which is based in swan view currently and runs on Wednesday nights 6:00-6:30pm start - racing from 7:00pm

Costs involved...
race fee at PRECC $10 members $15 non-members
PRECC Membership fee's $50/year or pro-rata after june

RULES:

• Motor Limit is 17.5BL or 27t stock... Silver can and sport tuned are also allowed
• ESC - Not allowed to use timing advanced profile speed controllers like LRP SXX Stock Spec and the likes, Also no Tekins RS's at this stage
• Control Tires must be HPI tire part #4793 front and #4797 rear
• No Tire warmers or traction compounds allowed
• Rims must be HPI vintage series rims 26mm front with 0 offset , Rears 31mm with 6mm offset
• Chassis - Any 4WD electric touring car type chassis is allowed
• Final Drive Ratio can be no quicker than 6.0:1 (17.5) but may be moved up or down at the discretion of the keri or darren to keep straight-line speeds even
• 6cell Nimh or 2S lipo's (lipo's must be ROAR approved items)
• Body's - 60's and 70's US and AU muscle car bodies only (race prep schemes preferred)

Some of the Body's to chose from

Late '60s to early '70s American pony car Vintage Trans-Am bodies or 60's and 70's Australia Muscle Car .

Bolink part numbers:
BL2262 '68 Chevrolet Camaro
BL2263 '65 Ford Mustang
HPI part numbers:
17510 - 1970 Plymouth AAR 'Cuda
17519 - 1966 Ford Mustang GT
17508 - 1965 Ford Shelby GT-350
7494 - 1968 Chevrolet Camaro
Parma part numbers:

Pegasus Hobbies part numbers:
PGH4001 - 1970 Camaro SS
PGH4002 - 1970 'Cuda
PGH4003 - 1970 Mustang

Rule set can be found here http://www.usvintagetransam.com/rules/2010rules.pdf

Basically its any 4wd TC type chassis .... FDR limits pending motor type and they have disallowed the newer advance timing and boost type ESC's
Tires are controlled type, its the vintage series from HPI.. the d-compound treaded tires.. 26mm fronts and 31mm rears, thus they will last forever and make the cars interesting to drive
Also i think we would be allowing the Australian based vintage muscle cars aswell, not limited to just the 4 or so US based body types..
In regards to the bodys , paint schemes must be period correct with numbers on hood, doors and trunklid..

Check here for more detailed info and rule sets etc etc..
http://www.usvintagetransam.com/index.html

I may have missed something so PM or post up questions and genuine interest in this class.. we need a minimum of 5 entries on the night to make this class happen

Theres 3 of us that are down for it 100% so far.. ive talked with a couple others that are very keen also..

What i'll be doing is take nominations like a interclub to make sure we have numbers on the dates so we dont find ours selfs with 3 or 4 of us at the track because a few other decided not to come that week.. thus once a month idea, it'll help keep numbers up as not everyone can do RC racing every week without fail..

Id like to have this kick off with its first race on either 1st or 2nd Wed of June

i work week on ..week off ...this is my week off so if we could work that in it would be great....ill hold off till this is organized a bit further so i dont dump money in and i dont ever get a chance to show up due to off swing of work.

9th of june is perfect if you ran it every 2 weeks or once a month i could be there but if you do it the 2nd of june there wont be a way i can be there for it falls on my on weeks ...

what motor or speedy is controlled

re: ESC's and Motors

I want to work around with what people have on hand currently ... but no tekins or new LRP SPX/Stock spec / SXX advance timing ESC's will be allowed

Motors yet to be decided 100% either.. want to see what people have on hand.. 27t / 17.5 / 21.5 / 13.5 etc etc etc and then limit FDR's pending the motor chosen

Interested partys have
GTB with 13.5
LRP 2007 Sphere with either 13.5 or 17.5
1st Gen LRP Sphere - no motor currently

Beev 30
27-04-2010, 07:07 PM
y no tekin

eichkay
27-04-2010, 07:11 PM
y no tekin

referring to the new tekin rs and rspro's ... boost and time advanced programs ... will most likely kill the class off quickly as these esc's turn 17.5 motors into 6.5 motors

Mic68 has been conning me into it, we both have a soft spot for old American muscle.Id love to get hold of a second generation TransAm shell if I can find one other wise the first Gen Camaro is still a cool shell.I think 17.5 motors would be the go most people already racing would have one or two lying around

i'm thinkin 13.5's would be a bit more fun...

obz: there was a company a while back who did the LJ shells. i'm pretty sure they were called 'classic forms' but i haven't been able to find any info on them, sorry. they also did HK's, FJ utes and some others.

they used to advertise in unique cars many years ago and also on the ebay.

great to see the interest is here.

The 35A hobbywing/venom 13.5 setups would be ideal but as a starting class and to help keep start up cost low as possible i think we will allow 17.5 setups... FDR limits will be worked out as weeks go on after some testing and input from others in the class.

at this stage the ultimate plan is to have a control ESC and motor but that will take effect in JAN pending popularity, so up til then you can run your existing race gear 17.5 with a non-advance timing features ESC..

Thats why they have been chosen.. make the cars a bit of a handful.

Im still waiting on my rear treads.. got everything else other than a chassis, undecided on what to run yet. My highend CF spec TC chassis are all extremely modified drifters and cant be reverse engineered with any real ease.

4 of us have 17.5's so i'll let the others know its 17.5 for now. next year it may change if we al feel the need but as mik68 posted re-grip levels i think 17.5 will be more than enuff grunt to make it interesting and fun.

Thats a super car not a muscle car...

On another note, ive been in contact with the US series organizer , he said they tryed 17.5 with 2s lip's and it over powers the tires and you end up with pizza cutters down the straights, FDR's used was not mentioned tho, and general consensus is to limit the FDR's anyways

so once ive got some rears to play with i'll do some speed/run tests and see where we need to be..

whats FDR'S SORRY but i dont know or i might of forgot

Sorry.. FDR is tech talk for Final Drive Ratio

Spur/Pinion x Internal Ratio of the car..

eg.. 83/23 x 2.6 = 9.38

most of the racers use FDR's in the mid to low 4's with a 17.5 but i think due to the tire dynamics/design due to no internal belt we might be looking in the 6.5 to 7 FDR range or maybe higher..

a quick few laps at precc on a coming wed will soon tell where we need to be.

I would love to join you guys in this class but due to the time I finish work i would miss half a night of racing. So I will have to wait for this class to make its way to Bazy WHEN and/or IF the on road track comes back to life.

I was having a little read of (cough... Look at) a Japanese RC mag ((RC World???) today and the T/A class is very popular over there. Some awesome cars and they looked awesome and right at home on the big oval.

Its all still a go.. people are talking in person and im getting much interest as people come up and asked me questions on friday night at bayswater..

The yanks are running 21.5's and 1s lipo's .. but i think if we just limit the FDR and keep the 2s lipo it'll be better for all. It'll keep the cost down and keep the running gear usable in other areas if this goes belly up or one or two racers want to swap to another class.

Im just waiting on my rear tires and well put electrics into the chassis.. once thats done i'll paint my body.. 9th of june is still my 100% committed start date, we might be able to bump it forward a couple weeks pending on how many others are upto speed and ready to hit the track.

Geeez Simon how much hacking you planning on doing. There are no jumps to worry about and your limited to a stock motor. I know this could be famous last words and you are the master of RC destruction but how much damage could you do.

A couple of shots of the Trans-Am shell. It looks like a bit of a low rider at the moment. I am waiting on a some new body posts to give it a more realistic ride height. The parts haver arrived to fix my busted ass TA05 but I wont have time to fit them or paint the body for a week or so.

My poor choice in chassis (this will do grab of the shelf option) has limited my gearing options so ive ordered another speed tuned gear set to bring my car into the 6's atleast..

paint is next thing in order... will start on that soon

Yeah well.. i wanted to run something fun, and didnt really want to spend cash i didn't need to, thus why i went with the TA02, ive got a few of them and heaps of spares..

I brought this chassis awhile back as it was a steal at the asking price and this was the first time i had a good look at it when putting the electrics in, its got nearly every tamiya option part going on it, including the titanium screws ..

If i can find some wheels and a body (i've been holding out for a Valiant, but am starting to think i shouldn't be fussy)i'll be there with my t2.

Anyone seen a set of wheels 'n tires at any of the hobby shops, i've been working too much lately and haven't been able to do the rounds.

Reminder bump... 9th of June first official Vintage Trans AM meeting..

6:00-6:30 rock up at Midland Rec Center on Morrison Rd
7:00 Racing kicks off

This club doesnt have a set of transponders like WestCoast, they do hire out personal transponders for the night if you dont have one.. i believe the cost is $5 or $7 hire or you can purchase a one on the night as they normally have a few new units on hand. Or just dont run a transponder is the other option.

First meeting will have teething problems .. ie FDR's to be set and ESC to be compliant or set to a fair setting in spirit of the class. Also i dont want to see people using tire warmers either and no traction compounds are allowed.. after seeing a few runs i think FDR's will be in the 6.5 and up range.. i saw simon running 7.5:1 and that looked like a decent speed for the track and it was still a handful on some corners.

Bring a pit table if you can, power outlets are supplied as are chairs... ideally if you can go 2 up on a table it'll make life easier.

If your going to be attending the first meeting please let me know either post up or PM me.. i would like to keep the guys at PRECC in the loop as to the expected numbers in the class.

4.5 is faster than 6.5 .... you can try and run 4.5 if you dare... the first run ive put out a preferred guild line at 6.5 and slower ive 7.5 but we will wing it and see where people need to be to keep it close and fun without having crazy fast speeds its a tight track... trust me you dont want to much speed with these low grip tires.

Matt and Lee seemed very keen and enjoyed themselves.. my cars gearing is maxed out at 6.44:1 car was quick enuff to have some good fun, dont think we need any quicker i think as it'll be too much for the tires IMO..

For the first run id like people to make sure there cars are not any more than 6.00:1 FDR if they can.

Otherwise bring on the 9th... its going to be a cracker of a first outting, so much fun..

I was really enjoying throwing my TA02 around the track, my limited adjustment chassis work rather well, only gave me a couple of options to change and that was my rear springs as the shock tower and arms only have one one for the shock to mount.. didnt even look at my camber, run as is.. just made sure it wasn't positive camber.

any results who was the stand out driver

I was out front with Beev30 on my tail all night, normally about 7 to 5 sec behind me until he get caught up with lap traffic which made it difficult to catch me.. His car was quicker in a straight line but it was still a good close race, I think Luke from stannies was next in line with matt's mello yellow trading places with him over the night.. i think Mik068 was rounding out the top 5 with darren progressivly getting worse and he fiddled with his car and was dropping places every run.. Lee, Simon and Chris were fighting it out with darren for 6th to 9th placings i believe

Official results are not up on the precc website yet.

Myself, D-Luks and Beev30 did have a track advantage tho we knew the layout and lines, Myself and Luke raced this track 3 times before with our F1's and beev30 come down for a tuning day and the odd race meeting maybe.

After chatting with a few of the guys i think most of us want to spread these VTA runs out a bit more and make it something to look forward to and allow those with family a chance to get away as every 2nd week might be too much of a ask.. But saying that if some of the guys want to run at any time PRECC require's 5 people in the class on that given night and they'll run a class.

These are the dates ive come up with, its 4 weekly and should fit in with beev30 aswell.

Vintage Trans Am Official run Dates:

7th July
4th August
1st September

27th October

I seem to have miss placed a bag full of TA02 and TA03 NIP parts.. Mostly TA02 stuff.. I may have forgotten to grab it when leaving the PRECC meeting last time i was there or the previous.

Bag is rather full and has few obvious and larger items like the black TA02 gear box houses front and rear sets, also FRP towers f/r and Cross racing NIP parts and various other goodies... its someone has come across this please let me know cheers..

Dropped in last night for a look and will say this class is the one for me.
The look of the cars and the close racing really appealed to me so with that i hope to be there for the next round.

stay away from the revheads stuff on ebay, as seen last night in the destruction of the cobra and the fact that my body has more 3m tape than lexan they are pretty crap. and thats being nice.
while its nice to have australian cars racing, its an expensive exercise when the body's wont last one race.

Got a email from Glenn at PRECC,

Do you think VTA would be interested in running in our Presidents cup over the 15th and 22nd September on Wednesday nights (15th qualifying and 22nd Finals) If so, I will put it in our Entry form.

This is a Trophy event, unknown cost but going on the last event it will most likely be $40 total covering both weeks.

From memory they run 3 qual's on the first wed night and then 3 or 4 finals on the following week.. Let me know of interest and we can make it happen.

G'day Fellow VTA Racer's.

Thought I'd introduce myself before I head down for a crack at this VTA stuff. I'm currently a member of RRC and have been since '07. I dropped in for quick look see a couple of weeks ago when I picked my son up from swim traning next door. I spotted a fellow RRC member there and got chatting about the class. Needless to say I was suitably impressed and went out a few days later and picked up what I needed to have a go. At this stage, due to work commitments, I'm looking at the 4th of August as the first race meet. I'm staying away from that American rubbish (should get a bite or two) and doing an SLR 5000 Torana body. Really looking forward to this, should be fun.

Cheers All. See ya at the Track.

We'll welcome you with open arms even if you want to aussie car... most of the guys in the class race off-road in the dry season and there are a few other RRC or MORBC guys join in the fun soon aswell.

The Torana body should hold up well to the biffo that is pipe racing..

By the 4th Aug i think we'll be split up into two groups as there is about 20+ people i know of with a VTA setup or one in the works.. So far at the last 4 racers we have upto 13 guys running at the moment.

Actually you can. I recall a night at bayswater offroad a few years ago, and one members girlfriend came along. She was... shall we say... well endowed, and marshalled for her b/f.
Someones car got stuck near her and she ran over to get it. She very nearly bounced out of her top, and had to hold herself down, but at that very moment, every car on the track went off. I kid you not.
Someone else here must remember that?
