View Full Version : Easy cleaning RC cars (especially nitro ones)

Thought I'd just add this tip here in case anyone didn't already know.
-Remove as much loose dirt as possible.
-Get a paintbrush, some WD-40 and a nice big rag.
-Spray the brush with wd-40 and brush the car as needed. AVOID ELECTRICAL BITS, or take them off to make things easier. If you remove all the electrics, you can just spray the wd-40 straight onto the crappy areas and brush it away.
- Once it's all clean, wipe any excess wd-40 off and voila, one clean rc car.
Check out my Revo in the members rides section to see how it turned out.

oh, and don't get wd-40 on polycarb bodies as it might eat away at it.

easier still method...
1. use air compressor to blow all large chunks of crud out of the bodywork and from servos and receivers.
2. spray degreaser around shitty bits
3 spray again with air compressor
*** this is sufficient but you can continue for ultra clean ***
4 spray with denatured alcohol
5. use air compressor to blow residue fromt he car.
done.

the lubricants in wd 40 make it a shit of a thing next time to clean
everything sticks to it.
degreaser is a winner then denatured alcohol is a freaking champ
the surfaces are dry not oily afterwards.

Yeah, I wiped excess wd40 off cos I knew it would attract stuff. But I think that the lube in wd40 will mean all that dirt doesn't 'cake' on like it did before. the stuff I was cleaning off had no chance at coming off with an aircompressor. Not that I have an air compressor. Next time I drive it and it gets dirty, the dirt will come off real easy.
It's just nice to be able to brush off the dirt and it returns to brand new looking straight away (pretty much). WD40 is also handy to have for other things as well.
Degreaser is good but you have to follow it with the denatured alcohol (or wd40) in case of rust. Two step process as opposed to one step.

Metho on a brush over everything even electrics. It evaperates really quickly so it wont do any harm.
Then blow it off with a compressor.
Also you can use Carby cleaner on the metal parts NOT anything plastic, it melts

I thought metho might eat the plastic? I guess not. That reminds me, zippo lighter fluid might work then. Using wd40 gives it that armour all, new car shine.

Tyre Foam...nothing makes plastics look new again like this does ;)

Joe, I thought you meant use tyre foam for the wheels for some reason. I didn't bother getting any cos I was gettin new ones :P
I'll see how this wd40 goes. Been reading other forums and seen a lot of support for wd40 so fingers crossed.

when you say spray denaturated alcohol, could you use a spray paint gun like attachment to your compressor and put metho in the cannister to spray it on that way?
I thought this would be a good way to do it.

you can get a low end one from them during thier sales for about $80-100
my dad has one and it seems pretty damn good for the money and should last a while if your only really using it for rc cleaning duties :)

what kind of horsepower should I look at?
opAsx
16-06-2005, 02:54 PM
if its only for cleaning your rc get the smallest one supercheap has.
it will be more than adequate
not really sure what the HP rating is on those ones, id guess 1hp maybe? i will speak to dad tonight and ask him

i only want one that can:
clean rc
pump up footballs and basketballs
use as spraygun
inflate bike and car tyres
blast random strangers with air

the spray gun wouldbe the only concern for the budget compressors.
if your plannng on spraying things that dont have to be too presentable the cheap ones are fine, if you want some quality paintjob or airbrushing buy a good one or one of those "pulse equalising" doo-dads (nfi on the name of it) sort of like a regulator for pressure. also a larger tank is better for spray painting.

I've got a GMC compressor, just one from bunnings, it's only small, I use it for all kinds of stuff, cleaning out my garage (with the blower), cleaning r/c, pumping up all the car(s) tyres, degreaser gun, etc, etc, it's very handy :)

Got the GMC 2hp one from Bunnings its $98 at the moment, needed to buy all the bits to go with it ie the hose, spray gun, needles etc. seperately though

do they have a 1HP one that's cheaper?
Also, how much did the extra stuff cost you?
citrus
18-06-2005, 01:09 AM
they had a smaller one but it was slightly less than 1hp and it was one that you can only run for 30 minutes and it cost $80. So the 2hp one was only $20 more.
Supercheap autos had a similar 2hp one for the same price, if you can wait till they have their sales they throw in all the connecting stuff for free usually, but at Bunnings there is a variety of boxes with various parts - the one i got was $25 and had the lot.

Tyre foam and then shoot a thick spray coat of metho over it brushing it down .
The tyre foam can not be beaten under any ciscumstances but it stays wettish so if you dont wash the residue off with Metho , it will make it twice as dirty next time it goes out as it will pick up everything .

Gonna have to get me a compressor (finally). I just hate going to Super Crap.....that place pisses me off big time.
Is it because you can never find what you are after and theres no one free to help you cos their busy helping other customers that can't find what their after either and when you go in to buy an air freshner you come out with a 1 million candle powered torch, brake clearner, UBD.............phew.........and then

Justo took the clean revo out for a squirt now that we have some fine weather!
Engine came loose cos I didn't tighten it up properly last night but got a good 5min of runtime in over frechly cut grass clippings and sand.
Front end held up real well. No signs of dirt. WD40 didn't seem to attract anything. The rear end is a bit filthy cos I was running without an exhaust deflector so the oil covered everything up back.
I'll stick to WD40 cleaning for now.

Found out another good way to clean your rc this weekend, after hitting the dirt, find a damp grassy stretch of green and run it on that, comes back nice and clean, on the outside anyway!

there is no easy way to clean a nitro car, i pull them apart and use metho and the cheap water dispersant spray, allong with a compresor, then spray in again and leave it in the sun to dry, no rust nothing sticks and they look great !fart
Don't lie WW, you take it into the shower with you. Welcome to TA ya bum.
