Hey blokes , i bought a HTC Desire today from cashies ( brand new in box ) but its locked to telstra .

In fact what happens is if i put my Vodafone card in it , it will make calls but all other functions being internet messeging etc dont work as it actually says on the screen " this card has limited service "

Does anyone know if it needs to be unlocked , upgraded ... who does this as im happy to pay if i can get it right

If the phone can already make calls it doesn't sound like it is locked . It may be a very simple fix.You just need to change the internet settings to suit Vodafone . Give them a call they should be able to give you the settings over the phone if it is a model they support they can probabley even guide you through the steps.

Could try rooting it and putting on cyanogen, v6 (froyo, android 2.2)

You will lose the Sense UI though, leaving you with the stock android interface which is pretty boring compared to sense, but it depends what you like.

Dazz is right, a locked phone won't let you make calls. Maybe get the software reflashed so it's not a Telco branded version.

If you were in Perth I'd say go to Fone-Ezy, but not sure where to go over there.

Remote, long time to talk!

No Desires are locked. You just need to enter in the APN settings according to your telco:

Hope that helps. You shouldn't need to root your phone. But I would because it is fun :)

Vodafone

Name: Vodafone Internet
APN: live.vodafone.com

APN Type: LEAVE THIS EMPTY

On my Desire the settings are found in Settings-->Wireless & networks -->Mobile networks -->Access Point Names

Then just press the menu key to add a New APN.

No Problem RB. Good to see another Android user out there. Don't forget to report back with cool apps you find.

I would recommend JogTracker for anyone who jogs or likes to record distance/time traveled.
