Ok, I'm gonna be putting together a pc today (PC2) from scratch out of bits and pieces. I will be running windows XP on it. Basically, I need some help networking it to my current pc cos I suck at networking.
My current PC (PC1) is connected to the internet via a 4 port Billion router. I figure I can connect PC2 to this router in order to network it with PC1 and connect to the internet. However, I tried this with another pc the other day (running win98) and it didn't work.
So is someone able to tell me what to do to get it working? I really don't want to mess with my current setup cos it's all working sweet and was a b1tch to get working the first time and I can't remember what I did anyway.
Also, I plan on getting a new 250GB harddrive to replace one of my drives in PC1. However I need to copy all the stuff over first. PC1 already has two harddrives. Can I just plug the new drive onto the IDE cable that my dvd writer is running off? I've heard it's not good to do this though.
Cheers guys!

plug a network cable from pc2 into the router
if your router is the dhcp server make sure pc2 is set to "Obtain IP address automatically" in the "properties/Internet protocol (TCP/IP)/Properties" window (it makes sence if you follow that :P
if not set up for dhcp (most nub routers are) just make sure you have set the IP address to be in the same range as PC1 same subnet, set the default gateway the same (usually the routers IP) and set your preferred DNS to the routers IP.
make sure they are on the same workgroup for windows filesharing etc and your good to go.
the router set up for dhcp is the easiest way.
if you have 2 HDD and 1 optical drive there will be an IDE connector free, just make sure to set the drive to slave (read the jumper instructions)
if you have 4 devices all connected, set the jumpers on the 250GB the same as the device your removing. as long as your not trying to replace a boot drive there is nothing wrong with copying info across to replace a drive.
to make the whole process easier make sure the original data is located on a seperate ide channel to the location of the data.
ie. original data HDD on ide primary channel
destination of data to a HDD on the secondary channel
or vice versa
if your copying from the slave drive to a master drive ont he same channel or vice versa it will take longer.
also why bother with the 250GB? the 300GB drives have dropped in price again and might not be the best $/GB drives but its another 50GB you wont have to worry about.
I fill a 300GB each month :(

Cheers man. Re the dhcp stuff, I'm pretty sure there's a reason it is turned off. I can't remember, probably had something to do with waix ;)
So, how do I find the ip address/default gateway of my router?
Dang, 300GB drives are almost 100bux more expensive than the 250's. No way I can afford that (unemployed remember!). I don't even know that I need it. I've had roughly 20GB of space left for the past 6 months. I just go through ALOT of dvd-rs. I prefer using discs cos it's easier to lend to people. I'd rather them deal with it than for me have to pay for drive space :P
Unfortunately/luckily I don't have a kick @ss Internet connection. And I've run out of stuff to get so it's a constant 45GB+ per month for me. I honestly don't know where it all goes. I don't go through *that* many dvd's.

hehe the whole waix set up you just set one pc to static ip and it will still connect to the router fine. then just forward the ports for that special program to work :P
billion routers are usually http://192.168.1.254 for the web admin page on your router
they have a default user login password which is usually admin/pass
give it a shot and see how you go.
i buy a 300GB each month for the last 4 months :(
i only use DVD-R if it needs to be used, i hate discs. when i used to back up all my crap onto cds i think i maxxed out at 2500+ cdr and then ralised i was a nerd :P threw most of them out or gave them to mates and now i only burn movies and games for mates on the rare occasion.
337GB was a big month last month for me. havig said that, its the 8th today and i have already hit 90GB :O

And if you come to this LAN that 250GB will fill up quick. I can hardly see you there burning DVD-R's all day. After everyone has finished copying and started playing games you'll still be burning.

hehe
the only thing i hate about LANs now is i always get raped for data.
i think the last real lan i went to was about 30 of us and we were using a gigabit network and between my 2 fileservers at the time i uploaded 1.2TB :(
my downloads totalled 7GB
you dirty leeching bastards :P

It started out as just being an exercise in putting a computer together with leftover bits.
Then I was thinking about using it as a server to host some random site. I need to learn more about servers :P
Now it's just gonna take care of all my downloading so I can use my other pc for games and stuff. And if I can get hooked up with the 'free' wireless internet around here, it'll be even better ;)
