I decided I wanted something new to see/read about on TA so - this thread is for all members to post a pic of their cool cars (iam a bit of a rev-head) and to make it more interesting just in case you are unlucky enough to drive something you would rather forget - throw on some pics or previous beasts you've owned !!!!!! I have owned a car for nearly every year Ive been alive......and Im sure Im not alone........... 8)

Nice car the mate. I'm not a fan of the holdens but my mate has a similar tire shredder and it looks like alot of fun. Would a bitch in the wet though, am i right?

My ride soon to be (as of july the 4th) is a 1999 Lancer MR, it has the 1.8l engine (less gutless than the 1.5l) and bascially fully optioned. Did i mention it is free :P (thanks mum).

I love my low riders and heres my Mazda Tribute . 2004 , 20 inch Chromies , dumped 12cm ( almost 5 inches ) from original and barely on legal with a rough ride to match , a can of coke needs a tiny bit of persuation to fit under the sides and you cant fit your nuckle between the tyre and the guards .

These pix were taken about 3 months ago when i had the suspension done so its settled a touch nicer but now that im back on track after paying off the rims its booked in on 28th of this month to get the bumpers side guards etc colour coded .

Definately no 4WD ing for me , i cant even jump a gutter any more .

yeah badges , they are 285/50/20 . 4wds have a massive hole in the guards to fill .

Ive attached a pix of it when it was standard so you can see the 16 inch it came with were terrible , let alone the gap in the guard you could stick your head in . In the picture below of when it was standard , the bottom of that side mirror is now actually where the door handles used to be .

My 95 N14 SSS pulsar..

Quick run down..
Very worked motor, tuned subtly at the mo, inc forged internals, loaded with tomei gear (cams, gears, gasket, valve springs, guides, rah rah)
Autronic SM2 ECU (with all the shiz) + CDI R500 ignition +MSD blaster coils
HKS GTRS turbo, SARD 850cc injectors, nismo comp fuel pump, blah blah, i could go on forever but the specs are on my site http://www.secretmensbusiness.org/

It frequently lunches on porsches and WRX's on the race track. and picks up the odd trophy at the car shows for engine bay...

HAHAHAHA! Yeah I'll let ya know when they call me :P

I just got my new turbo on...its HUUUGE. TD06-20G, its a monster compared to my old VF22 which was really setup for more mid-top end, than all out top end like this turbo.

Was a bastard to fit, there is no room to move in the Subaru's engine bay, and my blingy bling braided oil line got damaged during the install, so I had to resort to using the old hard line (which is more reliable IMHO), but it all works well...sounds like a truck turbo winding up!!

The Old 1 tonner looks great, done a great job! There sure are quite a few 4 bangers around, seems to be the trend. Add a hairdryer, presto lots of HP in a light car - don't get the number of k's as the bigger donk's before a rebuild is required though... This is mine before dropping it and tweaking it a little...

What proof do you have of this?

4orce
04-07-2005, 02:47 PM
ex mechanic, e.g. the Hyundai required a touchup after 95000k. It stands to reason the harder an engine has to work the nore quickly it wears out. I was also involed in street machining for 20 years, run a circuit racing team for 4 years...do I have to go on. It's not a shot at 4's just fact. I like any nicely done up car and what they can do with a four is very impressive, the rotaries are even more impressive, that's obvious by the Fast 4's and Rot's drags. Only the owner of a 4 banger would jump on the defensive that quick though...

BALISTC
04-07-2005, 03:34 PM
Well stock vs stock, there is no way that you can prove that a bigger engine will last longer than a smaller capacity engine. This will come down to how the engine is looked after in the hands of the owner.

For a performance engine, it comes down to the design IE frictional losses, how the engine is built (bearing and piston ring clearances), how it is tuned, what oil is put in it, and what environment the engine is in.

I've never known a person that owned a performance engine, to worry about how many km it lasts.

A WRX, for example with a turbo 4 cylinder engine, will kick the shit out of many a V8 sedan, and it will still go for many km..and I've seen WRXs do this many km too, in fact there was one that a guy sold a while back with 280,000km on the clock and it still had great compression. It wasnt modified further than just an exhaust, but you can see that it came from the factory with a turbo on board, and it lasted a long time.

Start pushing power out of ANY engine, whether it be V8 or 4 cylinder, and it will reduce its life...in fact, if you want your engine to last a long long time, you dont modify it.

The fact is, a V8 engine with basic breathing mods will be shown the door by a similarly modified turbo 4 cylinder engine in many cases, and there is no differences in how long the engines will last.

In fact, I'd argue that a "built" V8 engine with a high compression ratio, will wear out just as quick if not quicker than a well boosted 4 cylinder engine, because the crankshaft bearings are subject to a larger amount of load due to double the amount of piston rings placing pressure on the bores?

..Not to mention that the internals of the engine are subject to higher cylinder pressures 100% of the time due to the increased compression ratio, where as a turbo engine has a variable compression ratio, due to the turbocharger providing the higher combustion pressure only as it comes onto boost....and seeing as a turbo isnt boosting 100% of the time, the compression ratio is lower during ordinary driving conditions

Well the response all looks VERY impressive, but not entirely true. The loads on an engine gets spread across more cylinders therefore there is LESS stress on any one part. As to the crank the 8 has the same load spread accross 2 cylinders for every one 1 of a 4 (i.e. 2 cylinders ingnite together in a better spread on the crank shaft, the v8 crank is not twice the length of the 4 making the stresses less). As for your first comment "stock v's stock"...a WRX ain't stock!!! An RX maybe. When turbo go bang, all of these cars are basic 2L.

Just a question...Why did they ban turbos from F1, IRL, touring cars and sports cars? Answer they are TOO EXPENSIVE to run as they require MORE maintenance...now why is that?.....

The reason for a WRX beating a V8 is (from a standing start ONLY) you have 4 wheels getting traction to the ground, the only run I had with one was in my ute and had no prob keeping up, we were both rolling at the time (I was a standard 5L - 200KW), they are also very nimble due to their size. Back in the mid 80's they put a 4WD system into a standard 6 cyl EFI XF Falcon. The standing 1/4 changed from over 20seconds to 15.1...no engine mods!!! in fact and after the extra machinery it was heavier.

The WRX is an awesome piece of machinery but so is the EVO and all of the other WRC cars, remember it was born to race! 200KW is not the stardard 4cyl...sorry, and you can't do that from a normally asperated motor. A V8 also starts to get a little unreliable with a hair dryer The Corolla with 430000km, have you owned it for all of those K's? do you know it definately hasn't had something replaced? does it use oil? Is it modified? My standard one did at less than 150000k's.

Basically I stand by my earlier comment...

Please note, I have not bagged you or your car, quite the contrary nearly bought the WRX wagon myself (but for the rediculously high insurance), just stated facts.

See ya...

BTW I notice you race IC RC, I'm just getting into it (on road Stock & 19 Turn for starters), what are the pitfalls and what should I be looking for in brands of cars, motors, what batteries, etc...Thanks

As for your first comment "stock v's stock"...a WRX ain't stock!!! An RX maybe. When turbo go bang, all of these cars are basic 2L.

Well I can buy one from a Subaru showroom like that, so yes, its stock...if your argument was true, a HSV or FPV arent stock either.

Just a question...Why did they ban turbos from F1, IRL, touring cars and sports cars? Answer they are TOO EXPENSIVE to run as they require MORE maintenance...now why is that?.....

Turbos were banned from F1 for safety reasons...same reason that ground effects were banned. Turbos were banned from the Australian touring car championship because the majority of the field IE the naturally aspirated cars, were getting murdered every race. Unfair advantage. A turbo F1 engine is no less reliable than an NA F1 engine revving to 17000rpm for the entire race.

The reason for a WRX beating a V8 is (from a standing start ONLY) you have 4 wheels getting traction to the ground, the only run I had with one was in my ute and had no prob keeping up

I've won many roll ons in my WRX, and thats without a launch. It would have been instant game over if the launch was a factor.

Basically, your comments dont add up. A standard WRX, EVO or any other turbo car, is DEVELOPED from the factory to be as reliable as any other vehicle, turbo or not. Manufacturers would go broke if turbo cars wore out quicker than naturally aspirated cars! They put much development into making them more reliable. Turbo cars have stronger internals, better cooling and oiling systems, stronger drivetrains, bigger brakes and better suspension, to make them work and handle better than their NA counterparts.

This argument is STUPID, and if you want to continue it, come onto antilag.com forums and say that turbo 4 cylinder engines wear out quicker than V8s.

JD

turbo, not turbo.. who cares lol

wasn;t the original design of the turbo just to save money? so you could get more power out of a smaller (cheaper) engine?

i dunno though... i'm no car freak lol

and in the touring car stuff... the turbo cars (ford seirra? i think?) didn;t always win... the NA cars won a lot in the wet.

BALISTC
04-08-2005, 11:21 AM
The Skyline GTRs won by laps, wet or dry...

The original design of a turbo was to increase the volumetric efficiency of an engine, therefore increasing power and torque from a smaller capacity.

give credit where credit is due japanese cars where banned from from the touring car championship
because they were to fast

dont want to make anyone angry but the fact is last year a japanese touring car tested at philip
island driven by james courtney and was 6 seconds a lap faster than the v8 supercar lap record

thats my 2 cents anyhow

Hey BALISTC, it took you AGES to research that didn't it, I was waiting for your reply thought you'd be a bit quicker though. Sorry you were reading the wrong books. Turbos were banned due to costs nothing to do with dangerous speeds that's for sure. Why do you think the CART series died in butt, it's turbo and IRL isn't, much cheaper running costs. If you'd like to go back to when F1 changed to normally asperated engines, cost was the reason the FIA stated Funny thing is that the normally asperated engines are doing just what the turbos were without the danger of turbo fires and the high costs associated with the development.

As for winning rollers against v8's, from what I can see and read between the lines, your car isn't a standard WRX. Hard for me to comment there.

Anyway, back to my first comment - way back when, I admire what they have achieved with turbos, but it's still horsepower in a bottle. A bottle that spins REALLY fast which wears parts fast, without it just a 2L. BTW the first lot of turbos that were kicking the v8's asses were Volvos and Ford Sierra's, neither Jap cars. They were brought in to combat the RX7's - rotaries, without turbos I believe (great engine design - very simple concept). I believe the WRC was won last year by a Citroen and it's leading this year, 2003 was a Subaru, 2002 a Peugeot so the Jap cars don't have it all on their own. It's interesting that most of the Hondas are normally asperated though?

The reason why CAMS went to the V8 formula was that Joe Public related to the car as what he drove on the street (appearance only that's for sure). This is backed up by the numbers of fans they get to the race events and the passion that people have for either the Ford or the Holden. The old formula was becoming less popular with the fans for what ever reason. Drivers from all over the world want to drive the Aussie V8 formula as no other country in the world has been able to achieve with a V8 what we have.

Oh yeah, my superkart is 4 seconds a lap faster that a V8 Supercar around Easter Creek (2 seconds faster than Mick Doohan on his 500 too - not sure at Philip Island though) and its a normally asperated 250cc 2Stroke. We're capable of doing the standing 1/4 in 9.5 seconds...with your butt 40mm off the ground you feel EVERY K...

Don't get too upset, I'm enjoying the razz... Your turn !silly

ford vs holden yes this category has been divised for a certain section of the public but by no means all public

i was once a v8 fan but my interest in the sport droped since i like more than two types of car (under the skin both these cars are basicly the same) and neither car has original holden or ford parts the only parts that are original is the body panels. So "jo public" has more in common with the old days of group A (imported and australian vehicles alike) than they do with v8 supercars as group A was much closer to road cars than the v8 supercar. yes skylines where sold in australia by nissan

"no body in the world has acheived what we have with the v8"

What about nascar much bigger category with more history than v8 supercars or DTM (european touring car class mostly v8's) p.s. real v8s with over head cams not pushrods

yes im enjoying this too

4orce...I'm not rebutting, I've spent too many years of my life arguing about things like this on numerous car forums, and I'm sure as hell not going to do it on an RC forum :P

Fact is, with cars there are too many people with different experience, you'll never get anyone to agree on anything, and no one ever seems to be right...so its futile.

That is all.

As for winning rollers against v8's, from what I can see and read between the lines, your car isn't a standard WRX.

Definitely not standard ;)

Should be good for a low 12 on the unopened motor once its sorted....need to jet coat and heat wrap my equal length headers and all my cooler piping. Might even look at doing the turbo housings and intake manifold.

Its all about keeping heat out of where it shouldnt be, and in where it should be, but thats another argument on its own ;)

4orce
05-08-2005, 11:11 AM
Sounds like an awesome piece of machinery. Heat can definately be a problem. There was a guy up in Central Qld who put a 350 Chevy into a mazda 808 sedan. He mid mounted the motor with the extractors running so close to the clutch pedal he had to move the whole pedal bank to the right and remove the lining on the floor space so he could put the accelerator there. He used to use it for motorkhana, it was a weapon. He couldn't drive it for very long as he kept blistering his left foot.

What sort of times do you get now. Is the diff gearing standard or have you had a play with ratios? You can make an otherwise basic car and get some great times by playing with your final drive.

Did you have to lower your cylinder compression for the greater boost? Keen to hear how it goes !super

Let us know.

I agree with you on the V8 supercars, I don't bother watching them on TV, the only time I'm interested is when I marshal at both Bigpond 300 at Qld Raceway and at the Indy each year. I too like the different cars and, as you said, both of these cars are essintially the same under the skin. They only have to have 20% of the manufacturers motor to qualify for being a holden or ford. They all run the Ford style of heads as they flow better and rather than spending money developing they just use the technology available.

They'll not go overhead cam until Holden release one, the new Ford motors are quad overhead cams but Holden is still using the old push rod Chev. Nascars are great on oval tracks and are really quick once wound up but they are not capable of good times on a track they need to turn right and left (NO BRAKES Ahhhhh!!!) !yikes

The European V8 series was started a few years ago and was modelled on the Aussie formula. The organinsers of this series came to Australia and studied what we're doing and tried to reproduce it over there. I'd personally like to see these cars running here and force the Australian guys to develop a more advanced motor but cost (apparently) comes into it. AVESCO won't let any cars in that aren't 5L push rod - you don't have to have a Ford or Hoden. Toyota & Mitsibishi wanted to start in the Aussie series but they would have to make a dinosour motor to compete.

I'm not sure if Brian is still racing. I haven't come accross him to date. Do you know what size kart he races. The superkarts don't run on the sprint tracks as we're too big and quick. I tried to do a demo at the Lismore track early in the year and it was a handfull trying to get around the track. Had to steer with the rear tyres, fun but they get a little cheezy pretty quick !silly

The good thing about motorsport is that there is a niche for everyone from the old historics to the latest and greatest in 4 cyl turbos, circuit to 1/4 mile.... I just wish it wasn't so damn dear. For the cost of one race meet with the superkart, I can buy a new pretty hot mod RC electric car each time ($1100 per meet to be a front runner - and that's cheap for motorsport).

See ya !rockband

IRL, the cars that now run the American Indy car circuit are normally asperated V8's made by Chev (under a different name - can't remember), Honda, Toyota and Ford.. I think the Skylines done up to the current specs (with the areodynamics and reduced body weight) of the V8's would kick their ass... no doubt!

4orce
05-08-2005, 11:24 AM
The IRL actually are only running Chev, Toyota and Honda. Ford have kept there allegence to CART supplying all cars with their turbo Cosworth motor. Chev officially withdrew factory support for the IRL in 2004, only privately run motor now exist. Toyota has announced they are withdrawing factory support at the end if this year leaving only Honda and pricately run other manufacturers.

Stockman MR 2. One of Brian's beasts, modified to handle the touque of the KX250. The donk on mine is a single cyl Kwaka 250 dirt bike motor. Standard about 45bhp, mine 65bhp at 9250, kicks you fair in the ass when you hit the powerband. I know Brian Stockman fairly well, you'll see the superkarts running at Eastern Creek this Saturday on SBS, Speedweek ans then next Thursday night in Inside speed on Fox sport. Great fun, handle like their on rails just getting a little out of my budget at the moment. It's just sat there since January.

Fine I'll post a pic of my car. Not a lot done besides stereo, mild engine work to push the power from 98KW standard to 145KW. Runs low 15's but right now due for a rebuild and a new computer. Looking at a 2.4 EFI from the newer Mitsi's with turbo and Gready system. Oh and will have to buy mags one day! Still scares it's fair share of Commo's though

Just thought I'd bump this up to keep it going :)

The new issue of Perth Street Car comes out this week, and there is an article in there on my car :)

Since the article was done a few months ago, I've blown my engine (about 3 weeks ago) and its in the process of a full rebuild.

I've purchased a Jap spec Version 8 STi short motor from Subaru spare parts...comes factory assembled with forged crank, piston and rods, and reinforced block. These are TOUGH motors.

On top of that, I've done:

- Heads are getting deburred, and match ported.
- STi valve springs, new valve stem seals and shims
- Wade 272 cams
- Match ported intake manifold
- Match ported exhaust manifold
- Sard 800cc injectors

Tune for 20 psi, looking for at least 350 at the wheels. Next year will be looking at 6 speed box and high flowing the TD06 with a Garrett T04E front cover and wheel, and chasing 400 at the wheels on race fuel.

I want to see low 11 second 1/4 mile passes out of it by that time ;)

Sounds nice JOe, you and I will have to catch up and go for a bit of driving fun when done! Do you still see Big Dan? "IMMACUL8" I think he is trying to get a GTR at the moment.
350 at the rears in the rex would be nice! mate that gearbox of yours aint going to last for long rexes are renouned for having sloppy gearboxes! dogbox?
You still have the antilag running through the ecu?
What blew the engine? My piston number 3 blew in the skyline, found metal from the front mount plus running a bit to lean didnt help either!

BALISTC
24-02-2006, 03:23 PM
Yeah mate, I see big Dan all the time...he is still looking for the perfect R34 GTR, and when he gets it, you know its going to be good ;)

Gearbox wont last, so 6 speed will be on the cards next year :D

Antilag is still running, but I reckon thats what ****ed the motor. Rear passenger side big end bearing is toast, found metallic flakes in the oil from the bearing :(

Update. Add to my list:

Version 8 STi heads, deburred and ported.
Hollow stem sodium filled valves
Shimless bucket conversion.

For those who dont know what a bucket is, its the thing that actuates the valves. In a normal WRX, the clearances are set with shims. In the upper spec models, the buckets are shimless. The shims can cause all sorts of problems when using anti-lag, launch control or big rpm, such as breaking in half and chewing out the cams.

I was just going through all the stuff I have missed over the past few months and came across this thread. What a great idea! I am finding it very interesting as some of these cars are not available over here in the US, some of them look very nice too =)

While I am scoping out everyone elses rides I figure why not post a few pictures.

I didn't know that you guys didn't have these down there, it's a Cobalt SS =)

It's the basic economy car, front wheel drive (I get snow here!), 4 cylinders, good on gas etc. etc.

Though that might seem boring, and would put my license plate quite out of place the SS car is no slouch. The SS has an extremely good suspension package and a supercharged 2.0L mated to a very tight 5spd. Very fun car to drive.

interesting, we have one similir called the "astra" but looks considerably different. Yumm.... 2 litre supercharged would go quite nice, I drive a turbo charged skyline, quite a high horsepower number on it (as shown back in this thread) but you always have to wait for the turbo to spool, supercharger must be nice! definately different to what we have here in oz, looks nice!

So its basically the new model of the 80's "Classic" K car from Chev? !amazed (showing my age now)

My brother in the US just picked up a 89 Bronco monster (show) truck with 39" tyres, took possesion of a 65 Mustang because his mate needed the money and he traded in his Seadoo ski boat and Cadilac CTS-V on a 2007 Outlaw 11.2 mtr motorhome. Taking his grand total of vehicles 21 or 22 cars, trucks and motorbikes.

Some people have way to much money.

Thought I would wake this thread up a little, hope all these photos work.

Since my brother has some spare time at the moment due to a little mishap on a motorcycle test and tune day at his local race track where he high sided his 2003 Ducati 999R and broke a few feet and ankles, 1 knee, 1 wrist, a few fingers, a huge bruise in his wallet and re bruised a few already bruised bones from a little off he had a few weeks earlier here in Oz. I finally got him to send me some photos of his latest toys. This is only a few of the 28 cars and bikes he owns.

But here is my latest weekend toy
1961 Mercedes 220S http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc303/bd581/mercedes.jpg

Bought it a month ago, from the daughter of the original owner. Its been in his garage since he died in 2001. Lovely car to drive and in near perfect condition. Paid less than half its value. The daughter wasn't worried about the money, she just wanted it to go to a good home
