if your looking under $250 just find the cheapest one you can that will fit that size.

go to strathfeilds and ask them what they have laying about.

in that pice range your better off going uber-cheap and saving money and buying a decent one later as opposed to spending $250 on something that will be only marginally better than a cheap crappy one and having nothing to put towards a decent one later on.

yeah james i love the speaker kit stuff, i built my front speakers with a friend good fun, but very time consuming, if I knew a cabinet maker it would be a much easier process.

One day I will build the whole set but just for now, i want cheapo centre.

BOSE is crap. You can do so much better if you're spending that sort of cash. Something like Athena or Krix are comparable price and a ton better. for $250 you're definitely at the low end.

the centre does almost all the work in a 5.1 setup so it's worth spending as much if not more on than your front speakers.

try a kit like the ones mentioned or something yeah :) or maybe somewhere that does high-end consumer stuff. you might find a cheap pioneer or yamaha or something which should be ok.

Hey Citrus . Ive been in home theatre for ages and let me tell you ive spent more on my theatre room than our 2 cars and yes ,im from the old school of CRT projectors ( the 3 big tubed industrial machines .. lol ) and spit on DLP LCD as they cant get the colour right .

Centre channel speakers in my opinion are definately overpriced as its 1 of those items that you need for home theatre as it is the main source running during movies etc as Aj said and because of this demand , they decide to build 1 of these speakers and charge a fortune for nothing .

If you want buy something cheap , my best opinion is to go to cash converters or money traders etc and buy a pair of second hand normal stereo speakers . You can get a pair of something beefy for around $200 and definately with a bit of shoppping around youll find something extreemly good with $300 . Centre channel wont use too much of the base driver as they dont drop too much on low frequency but let me tell you it will cover a full range and will handle what you pump into it .( assuming you buy a pair with 10 Inch drivers or the like )

95% of the time they will be 8 Ohms so depending on your amp , you can just run them in parallel and it should be fine ( just check what impedence your amp will run down to ) otherwise its a simple wiring rearange to run them into series up to 16 ohms .

Once again , centre channel speakers are expensive cause people dont realise they can use stereo speakers in place of them so they price a single centre speaker to do the price of 2 ( i hope that makes sense as im not the best at explaining things ) .

In short , go to cash converters and grab a pair of house speakers ( in the 8 inch minimum size but 10 inch ideal .

Good luck .

If anyone else agrees / dissagrees , let me know .

Adam .

By the way , Bose is outstanding stuff if you want to listen to music at low volume or room level Db , it dont like being pumped as it starts to sound ike Home PC speakers in my opinion ( the sattelite systems im talking ) .
