So off a whim I bought this kit today. It's not finished yet, and probably won't be finished for a while cos I need a motor/esc/servo/battery/paint.

Anyway, took some pics as I was building. Nothing hugely interesting. Dunno why people would want to see anyway.

I'll take somemore later of more detailed parts that are cool.

There doesn't seem to be much to it.

Step 1. Diffs (as usual).

The front uses plastic outdrives (they look carbon to me) and the rear uses steel ones for some reason. I used Associated difflube as BB suggested(I think) and they are smooth as. Not that I can compare them to the stock lube as I didn't use it.

justo316
15-06-2005, 07:26 PM
Diffs installed. That chassis is all graphite.....and it's all MINE!

Shock towers and suspension arms on and it's starting to take shape.

The CVDs are massive. I don't remember ever using ones this thick.

justo316
15-06-2005, 07:30 PM
SHocks. I HATE building shocks. My brothers savage almost killed me cos there were 8 to do.

It's funny seeing 1/10th scale losi shocks cos they are almost identical to the mini-t shocks.

I like the way they are built upside down. You dont have to spend ages getting rid of airbubbles.

thats already making my pants tight...

soooo nice... must resist... urge too strong... save for emaxx parts...

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

justo316
15-06-2005, 07:32 PM
Finally (for the moment) got the wheels and shocks installed. Buggy is very light cos the whole things graphite.

More to come later!

Might try writing a review, although I can't actually test it to see how it runs :P

what do you need to test it out justin?

Still needs a servo, esc, motor, batteries....Too poor to buy them at the moment.

On the shopping list:
- Venom fireball 15t
- ESC (probably give GM another shot)
- Venom 3000NIMH batts (cheap!)
- Some decent servo that's really fast and not expensive.

opAsx
15-06-2005, 08:13 PM
order the venom from rms before they run out
they ran out of 21t damnit

im going to order a low turn tomorrow (another fking order) to go with my new esc when it arrives

i am so stupid :'(

Lookin' good Justo - Are you gonna paint it anything like your avatar????

justo316
15-06-2005, 08:37 PM
Not gonna bother ordering the motor yet. If they run out, they run out. They were only 30bux to begin with anyway which is still a steal.

I'm not sure about the paint job yet. I was hoping the carbon stickers would come with it but they don't. I'll probably do something light like a white/silver theme...juat waiting for inspiration.

justo316
15-06-2005, 11:04 PM
*ahem*....no thanks king. That would clash with the yellow wheels!

Paint job coming up. Got nothing better to do. Can't afford paint so I'm using what I have left.....

justo316

justo316
16-06-2005, 01:42 AM
Well, nothing really. I sorta said that I got rid of most of my RC stuff to get it. I think she assumed I did a swap like I did with the revo....I'm not gonna clarify the matter

James
16-06-2005, 09:25 AM
nice nice nice. paint looks fine dude! the blue and those stickers go together nicely! dont bother with a fireball motor, go get yourself a 7 turn or a 9 turn or something. RMS has Paradigm motors left. be warned, they are high maintenance. Else, get a stock motor, race it in stock class. (monstor, p2k2, etc)

sweet as!

opAsx
16-06-2005, 09:35 AM
you can have my team paradigm for $70

im sticking to budget and brushless

no need for an uber brushed motor :)

James
16-06-2005, 10:36 AM
thats a steal. If anyone wants an 11x2 Epic D6 based Team-Paradigm motor, this is a good chance!!! cheap :)

opAsx
16-06-2005, 10:41 AM
also for Perth people, that will be $70 including postage or $75 in an express satchel. im sure that would go really nice in the xxx4 justin :P

justo316
16-06-2005, 02:16 PM
I'm on the cheap guys! Going or a low turn motor like I'd like to, is just gonna mean I need a better esc (more expensive) and better batteries (more expensive).....

Toying with the idea of brushless later when I win lotto or something....RMS still have a pretty decent deal with the Novak super sport for less than 400.

BUT, for now, I'm gonna be a tight-ass.

Looking smooth Justo. The XXX-4 is a nice ride all round and I think you've done it some justice :)

Hope to see you running it on a track in the warmer months this year.

Wicked. My bro is lending me his batteries and esc for now. Means I need a motor and servo to get this baby running. So for 50bux I'll finally be able to drive it!

justo316
17-06-2005, 01:12 AM
nah, I don't think he's registered. It's my little brother.

justo316

** Random Pics **

The CVDs on this kit are huge. I really don't remember seeing CVDs this thick on anything but nitro trucks.

e107_files/public/36_cvds.jpg

justo316
18-06-2005, 04:39 AM
The rear shock tower. Nice thick piece of graphite. Front is the same thickness. The Losi site describes adding another piece of woven carbon fibre from PRP to bulletproof the towers. I don't think I'm hardcore enough....although it'd look pretty cool !amazed

e107_files/public/36_shocktower.jpg

justo316
18-06-2005, 04:41 AM
The shock shafts and hinge pins are titanium nitride coated. I don't know what that is except it's kinda gold coloured and it still scratches :(

e107_files/public/36_nitride.jpg

justo316
18-06-2005, 04:44 AM
Finally (for now) a shot of the rear bumper. AKA the wheelie bar ;)

Sell the Kyosho!!!!!

justo316
20-06-2005, 03:44 PM
Well, put a venom fireball in and got this sucker going today. Not entirely impressed. Nitro is better. I think the recommended gearing doesn't have the acceleration I like so I'll drop down a couple teeth and try again. Top speed was ok, but no where near what I'd want. Guess I probably need a kick ass motor. Battery only lasted a few minutes it seemed which was weird.

So, on the shopping list now is a decent, low turn motor. An ESC to match. Some batteries. Probably add up to around 300bux.

With the Novak Super sport at $400, looks like I might go brushless with this baby!

opAsx
20-06-2005, 04:08 PM
yay another brushless buggy... finally someone for me to race in the "amateur budget class" :)

justo316
20-06-2005, 04:11 PM
"amatuer psycho class" ;)

I'd hardly call a XXX4 G+ plus Brushless setup a "budget" ride. :P

opAsx
20-06-2005, 04:14 PM
its under the $2k mark so its budget class :P

i have the hacker in my t3 truck and will put another brushless set up in my b3 (now were talking major budget buggy action there :P)

im really keen to see a 4wd buggy though. the only prob ihave had with a 2wd buggy is steering... the front seems to float on hard surfaces.

hmmmmm 4wd craziness.... hells yes :)

justo316
20-06-2005, 04:21 PM
4wd is awesome. I'm dialing some of the steering out for the next run.

How much was the hacker setup? I'm looking for cheap brushless.

opAsx
20-06-2005, 05:24 PM

awesome deal! the XS3 is nice (for the price) haha I'm a poet and I didnt know it.

You can race anything (any motor config) you like in novice class, but when you start whipping everyone, all the time, you move to the regular classes (buggy stock, buggy mod, etc)

I'm gonna race buggy stock, when I sort my buggy out!

** New(old) motor!!! **

Got bored today so had a look at an old 10turn LRP motor I had lying around. I bought this about 5 years ago when I got back into RC with a Pro3. Cost me 150bux from Perth Hobby. Awesome motor. Had my Pro3 going 70kmh against my mates car.

A couple years ago I was considering doing a 3rd channel switch mod that would act like an RC NOS by connecting up a second battery pack to the circuit. So I started by just hooking up two batteries to see what would happen. DANG! This motor was flying (and frying)! Had a look and my brushes had all but worn out. The endbell metal bits were bent from the stress. Motor looked DOA.

And that's how it's been until today. Pulled off some brushes and springs from other crap motors lying around and installed them. Gave the com a bit of a clean. Bent metal bits back into place. Turned it on, and what do ya know.....it works!

It's raining outside, but from what I can tell inside, it's gonna be fun ;)

damn :) sounds good :)

what ESC are you running?

justo316
29-06-2005, 05:24 PM
I borrowed some truck esc I got for my wild dagger but then got passed onto him. I think it's an F1 Digital and it can handle down to an 8turn.

Trying not to buy anything for this car until I decide whether to save up and get the new Novak brushless system or stick with brushed motors...

justo316
14-07-2005, 11:09 PM
** New Battery (Exciting yes!) **

Thanks to Opasx I now have a kick ass 7cell 3600mAh NiMH battery. Built it myself. Hasn't blown up yet. Deans pro bars from Perth RC. No jig. I glued them while they were sitting in the car. The araldite didn't really dry properly before I pulled the cells out and soldered them. I taped it up with sticky tape so should be dry by tomorrow.

Haven't taken it out cos my steering servo needs new gears (saturday). I gave it some throttle and you can really tell the 7th cell is there. I love it! Can't wait to let rip.

Anyone know if it would be wise to gear down a notch now?

as if wise ever plays any part in this hobby :P

you will find out soon enough if it was a bad move :P

justo316
14-07-2005, 11:17 PM
I tried to kill that motor once before and it survived so it should be right if my esc doesn't thermal first I guess.

opAsx
14-07-2005, 11:21 PM
hehe, i gave my b3 an absolute hiding this afternoon before it started drizzling :)

i have 1/10th stadium truck wheels and tyres on the back and and 8 cells on the hacker 8s...

i built a little ramp along the kurb...

was a great afternoon... especially once i realised how crazy it is on gravel. its so much fking fun. i can get drifting on bitumen, gravel is massive slides and huge roosts of dirt flying everywhere. i might have to bring the hacker set-up to perth next time justo so you can give it a run in the xxx4 :D

justo316
14-07-2005, 11:23 PM
That would be brilliant. I'm so far, unconvinced as to whether brushless would be any better than what I got. People tell me it's equivalent to a 10-11turn motor which I already have.

opAsx
14-07-2005, 11:34 PM
but not having to rebuild the motor... and longer runtimes...

brushless all the way :)

also it depends on which brushless motor you get. the one i have is supposed to be equivelent to an 8 turn... nice :D

justo316
14-07-2005, 11:39 PM
No rebuilding/longer runtimes != $400-$700

It'd have to run for like, an hour for me to justify that :P

opAsx
14-07-2005, 11:47 PM
remembering the $400-700 includes an ESC.

brushless motors for 540 size gear start at ~ $100 iirc.

the ESC is where the moneys at.

still... different strokes for different folks... :D

justo316
14-07-2005, 11:52 PM
definately, if I were buying new, it'd be a no brainer. But I only have to buy an esc now, and I'm budgeting for around the 150mark. Maybe if I get serious about electric again I'll have to pick up a brushless and move it around between all the cars.

opAsx
14-07-2005, 11:54 PM
i scored a bargain with my yokomo ESC

does down to 12T and 6-7 cells and only cost me like $50 i think

does a great job on a mates orion motor and no thermalling. wheeee :P

JBop
15-07-2005, 12:00 AM
ummm pls dont blow up my esc.

i will steal ur dogbones.

justo316
15-07-2005, 12:05 AM
What dogbones? Dogbones are for chumps. Super gay sliding shafts are where it's at :P

justo316
15-07-2005, 06:50 PM
Ok, so my servo is stripped and I haven't got replacement gears for it yet. I wanted to see how fast these new batteries were so I took the servo apart and realigned it so the missing teeth could be avoided if I turned the trims down. Ended up with about 5 degrees of steering either side :P

Anyway, just drove it round my driveway briefly. Now it's going how I like it! It's not stupid fast, but it's how I wanted it to be on my regular 6cell 2400s.

Tomorrow I should be fixing my servo so will be able to take it for a proper run and I will get to see how long these batts last. I have a feeling I need to gear down so my esc doesn't shutdown and motor doesn't overheat.

opAsx
15-07-2005, 07:27 PM
you need to get some vid footage justo and do the testing as well as possible to get an idea of any improvements between the packs.

I set up some withces hats on the road and used my bros vid camera and checked the difference of speed between my v-one-s and my pure-ten.

easy enough :)

opAsx
15-07-2005, 07:34 PM
is it fast as your revo... oh wait... thats not moving :D

id like to definately compare the differences a modern 4wd chassis has over an aging 2wd chassis like my b3

not seeing the 2 compared i think would make for a little fun :)

opAsx
15-07-2005, 07:40 PM
hehe.

i know that feeling. but the other way around :)

i dont find the love for my nitros after using the hacker.

hopefully a few more nice electric set-ups will have me totally battery powered for mayhem :P

justo316
15-07-2005, 07:53 PM
Tough to film my cars cos I play with myself ;)

Plus, I only have the vids that my digital camera takes and I can never be bothered editing them to smaller file sizes. I will try though when I get it going proper.

justo316
15-07-2005, 08:32 PM
Hence the.... ;)

<---- Hey, 9 stars!

opAsx
15-07-2005, 08:41 PM
hehe. idjits :P

Justo, you up for a street race? b3 vs xxx4.

you should be able to whoop it even if i am using the hacker, i just want to see them running :D

opAsx
15-07-2005, 08:52 PM
hehe... until you break something then we both laugh at you and keep mucking about in your absence :P

opAsx
15-07-2005, 08:59 PM
hehe, i have gotten it a bit on the back wheels, nfi how, i was actually already at about half speed and the wheels lifted ffs. kinda crazy. i think you can see it in the vid clip i posted up before.

i only noticed it in the vid and not when i was running the car though. i was too busy trying to not drop the camera :D

justo316
15-07-2005, 09:11 PM
how come they dont do electric 2 speeds? That'd be awesome.

opAsx
15-07-2005, 09:13 PM
they do :D

my emaxx is a 2 speed, manual shift too :D

danhvcalphabet's LST will be a proper electric 2speed using a 2speed gearbox.

cant wait to see it :D

justo316
15-07-2005, 09:20 PM
Yeah, but you just don't see 2-speeds available for any other cars.

Every nitro on the planet pretty much comes with a 2-speed standard nowadays. Why don't they do them for all the electric cars??

opAsx
15-07-2005, 09:22 PM
no need in most cases.

plenty of single speed electrics hitting 100+km/hr

nitro is a little more difficult on a single speed :P

opAsx
15-07-2005, 09:29 PM
true, and the 2speed electric (in the stock emaxx anyway) only seems to give it a little more top end.

im thinking if i get into racing it i will take the gear change out altogether and make it just the 2nd gear, i can still get wheelies with 2nd gear anyway :D

justo316
16-07-2005, 05:10 PM
