i have a kokam 7.4V 1500mah high output lipo battery.

it has been used maybe 10-15 times and charged maybe 10 times.

i was just charging it then on the "auto peak" or whatever sensor it was on the suprnova competition charger (same as i have done since i got it and same that i have been chargin my 11.1V 1800mah pack) and i have just noticed the battery "swelling"

it is looking like a balloon.

i stopped the charger, disc the batt and took it out under the patio (dont want it going pop in the house if its about to happen)

anyone know if this is an expected part of a lipo charging process or if this one is a "bin job"?

all help appreciated :)

hehe yes, it was indeed rooted. i just dropped it by mistake then out the side on the paving, which broke the silver packaging and there was a freaky spark/flash thing jump out.

i have put the lipos on the furthest paving from the house until i can find a way to dispose of them, when i picked it up it was burning hot where when i was it out it was room temp. i would doubt i could hold the battery for more than 5 secs comfortably after feeling the heat. kind of scary.

mind you that little pack has had a bit of a beating in the rc18t with rough jumps etc. it also came loose during one tumble on the road a week ago.

now to cross my fingers one of the LHS's will have some in stock tomorrow :S

That's why I don't understand why people want to put lipos in offroad cars :P

because they are freaking fast :)

even if they only last a couple of weeks... the grin factor makes it worth the price :P

On that note , this goes to show that allot of items being released these days do come out with these lipo cells as standard , this includes mobile phones and toys ( yes i sell remote helis now imported from china with these cells in them as standard and had to fill out a form to get htem through cause of it ) . I also have an Ipaq PDA that runs a lipo internal cell .

My point is , drop your phone and it will blow up , crash the heli ( and cause its sealed you cant see batt damage ) and it will blow up , drop your PDA ( and cause the batteries internal ) it will blow up . THis is dangerouse shit man and infact i never charge my PDA or my 7.4V on the mini R if its not in front of me , i touch it every 5 minutes to make sure everythings sweet as i am very scared of them , ive seen them go bang guys and its some srious damage

after watching that one errupt i am also in agreement.

i wont be avoiding them though. only using them in my road cars from now on.

the rc18t is fast enough on 8 cell pack, the lipo only gave it a little less weight. not worth the *BOOM* factor :)

my rs4 and mini-r will both be fine with lipo and my rc18t will be looking for an alternative power source (one that will fit the ****ing chassis anyway :P) unless it comes to speed runs or on-road racing (smooth on road, no more of this country bitumen bullshit)

i now have a heap more respect for the lipos compared to yesterday when I was blissfully ignorant of what i have seen today.

Have you seen RC lipos go bang? Or the lipos in phones/pdas cameras etc. I think the ones in the phones and pdas etc aren't as fragile as the ones used in RC I could be wrong though, maybe I should go check my phone charging in the other room.

i can safely say I have now seen an RC lipo go *bang* :)

my pda and phone both use li-ion batteries

my old pda had a nimh pack (POS)

i think the phone lipo's are also much lower voltage as well.

my understanding from what little i have read this arvo is the batteries over 3V are alot less stable than those beneath the 3V limit.

and phone batteries were supposedly very low voltage.

either way... they are now out of bounds for my off roaders :)

If my Mini-T is going to hell, its going in flames with a burning LiPo on board....I dont care, I love the power and the speed ;)

lol @ the burning in hell cars .

If a lipo cell starts bubbling or warming up , bury it and thats exactly what i mean , im not being sarcastic , bury the bastard .

With regards to the PDA batteries , i own 5 PDAs as i bluetooth them throughout the house as remote controls on the walls in the rooms and 1 of them is a Compaq 3950 ( for those who know it , its used for the Nevo remote control program ) but anyway , this was 1 of the first PDAs to go to lipos and they then went back to Lion cells for some reason so my guess is as good as yours .

As far as off road , unless you can pad it up , i wouldnt recomend it .

Considering the charger you have ... Have you checked the Max Charge Percentage setting? if its greater than 100% your over charging.

The ballooning happens when you over charge, its the gas being release between the plates.

Battery is only good for a Battery Fire Bomb now

BB :(

its now safely burried in my in-laws neighbours fornt garden.

i went covert style last night and dug a 2ft hole in the ground with my bro-in-law.

i just went out and looked this morning and if it wasnt for the fact i know we planted it next to a tree i wouldnt know there was a hole dug there by 2 rather drunk idiots using a garden trowel and a bucket (2ft took about 30 minutes of laughing and throwing wood chips at each other) :P
