Nissan has confirmed that it will enter the V8 Supercars Championship in 2013 with Kelly Racing.

The Japanese manufacturer made the announcement in a press conference at Melbourne’s Crown Casino this morning.

Nissan is the first manufacturer to confirm its entry into the sport under the new for 2013 Car of the Future regulations.

It is not yet known which Nissan model will be used in the V8 Supercars program, although the company confirmed that it will use an ‘all-new’ sedan model.

Kelly Racing will be known as Nissan Motorsport from 2013, with all four of its cars expected to carry factory Nissan colours.

The team will continue to develop its own chassis and engines from its Braeside, Melbourne, base, but will do so with input from Nissan’s global performance arm NISMO.

The length of the deal between Kelly Racing and Nissan has not been disclosed, although it is being described by Nissan as a ‘long-term’ program.

Nissan Australia managing director Dan Thompson said that the V8 Supercars program will play an important role in the company’s future in the country.

“Nissan believes that, alongside Ford and Holden, we possess the most convincing motorsport DNA and track history in Australia, making a V8 Supercars debut in 2013 an obvious initiative,” said Thompson.

The announcement being made at Crown Casino
“We are targeting No.1 importer status in Australia and already making progress towards that as one of the country’s fastest growing brands. V8 Supercars will boost that momentum.”

Kelly Racing driver and co-owner Rick Kelly says that the new deal is an important step in the team’s plan to become a dominant force in V8 Supercars.

“I couldn’t be more excited with the opportunity Nissan has offered Todd, myself and the entire team at Kelly Racing to become their official factory team,” he said.

“Nissan’s genuine enthusiasm, unwavering support and absolute professionalism through this evaluation has been tremendous and underpins their absolute intentions of Championship success in the category – a dream we share and hope to deliver on.

“This new partnership has only been made possible by the endless amount of hard work that John Crennan has done for Kelly Racing on this project, and that of Ian Moreillon, Jeff Fisher and the team at Nissan of which Todd and I are very grateful.

“The Nissan Car of the Future (COTF) project is a huge undertaking however Todd and I are firmly focused on the job at hand this season ensuring that Kelly Racing takes those important steps forward on and off the race track.

“Development of our cars and recruitment of key personnel in the off-season should assist us to realise these immediate goals.

“This new partnership brings with it a host of opportunities for the team, our business partners and of course fans and delivers the vision that we have shared since our inception in the category in 2009.”

As a big V8supercars fan im pretty happy with Nissan jumping on board, hopefully a few more will follow..

Will be a Nissan Altima. Which you cant buy here.

Under the current rules it has to be a RWD 4 Door Sedan.

It will also be running Control Tyres, Brakes, Suspension, Gear Box, Chassis, Power output and weight.

They Kelly brothers are running the team So basically it will just be something for the bogans to yell F*&^ING JAP CRAP at.

v8 supercars has lost its charm. Its nothing but a money grabbing attempt by the organisers. Which will hopefully better the sport for the spectators

With all that said I hope that Nissan throw hundreds of thousands of dollars at it and shit all over holden and ford. Thats my opinion anyway.

yeah, the big teams cry cause slow cars get in the way, its all about making money now.
the cars are so far from what you get on the showroom now its almost like nascar.
half the car panels are carbon fibre, eveything is hung from the rollcage as its basically a tube chassis that cosmetically looks like a shell and its gone the way of F1 with the same teams at the front every race and its basically a high speed parade

I agree group c was way better. Chrysler are also signed up to do the V8 championship in 2013. As for nissan shitting on the locals fat chance of that with car of the future the wins will be spread around more no matter what budget anyone team has over another. Support Australia buy Australian

LOL.. Narrow mindedness at its best..

My Ford was made in Thailand and my Holden was made in Korea. Great logic there..

There is a difference between Made in Australia and Assembled in Australia. The V8 supercars are no longer Holdens or Fords anyway.

I gotta say 05 you embody everything I expect of a V8 Supercar supporter..

I really hope that it does benefit the sport and not just the pockets of AVESCO because they have proved themselves to not care about the fans only the money of late. As a result have lost many supporters.

The are relying on supporters that dont know any better and their spawn to keep the numbers at the gate ticking over. Its sad as it used to be such an awesome series but its been ruined by becoming a cash grabbing popularity contest.

Its the way of all sport mate it happens. As for ruining the series i don't know the effecct of jap and us cars being in the field but car of the future and the sale of V8's will mean closer racing more races and more of the field able to win. I think you would be suprised what the average punter knows about the V8's mate and sure sum are just there because (1) it's Australian (2) what else is there. Bring on ya datto coin mate won't do much good but.

If Nissan and the kelly boys can produce a supercar anything like the Winfield GTR's back in the 80's , they will be up there or in front of the pack .

I'm looking forward to the introduction of other manufacturers into the V8SC, gets a bit boring with the current Ford vs Holden races. I know they once had skylines in the race but they were 4wd with a turbo straight 6. The V8's didnt stand a chance and the race was one sided.

I reckon its a good thing as it will bring more factory money to the sport , dont no if it will make the racing more exciting tho , to do that we need to get Wayne Gardiner back in the series he was always good for one big stack a weekend :)

I have the token Holden in the garage but honestly, it's a shit car... the Fords I've driven have been shit cars too. I'd be half interested to see if the Jap cars could teach the Aussies a thing or two about racing performance then maybe a few more Aussies would think seriously about their buying decision thus kicking the Aussie car company's arses into making a better quality product. Don't get me wrong, Aussie V8's are wicked fun to drive but I don't think anyone can argue they're anything but shit build quality at best. The Japs and Europeans run rings around us when it comes to presenting the full package.

Nissan doesn't enter a race series to fill up the tail end of the field. They generally do pretty well no matter what they've turned their hand to - JGTC, Le Mans etc.
With NISMO support Kelly racing should do well. Maybe not in the first few races but by the end of the season.

Interesting though that the GTR's were developed in Australia with little or no help from Nissan/NISMO and in fact the Aussie developed cars outperformed the Jap spec racing GTR's with superior power and unique at-the-time electonic front/rear torque split control. So will be intersting to see new makes taking on the (not anymore) big two.

Don't get me wrong, with car of the future every car on the grid will be able to win races no doubt. Big Aussie cars are now well made for there price sector, u wouldn't get much of a car for the money buying european cars esp mercs and bimmers which i love but got to be realistic when u actually have to pay for a car. Jap cars are slowly getting beaten up in quality testing lately.

Ill say from experiance in my job, i see alot more problems with Euro cars that i eva do with Falcons or Commodore hey...

Most of the Jap stuff is pretty good hey very reliable they run rings around Euro stuff...
